This was one of those anime that I would be up watching way past my bedtime with no real understanding, or context to speak of. I was always enamored with the art style and aesthetics, not to mention the music was always awesome. I remember watching the show in a kind of mental limbo… due to the seemingly advanced themes that an average 7th grader wouldn’t understand, I often recollect the way it made me feel. Very intimate in a way that probably wasn’t coincidental, I subconsciously look for these same feelings in other anime I think and it’s very rare I find it. This video helped me understand things I didn’t know I needed to understand and reminded me, I definitely have to revisit the series!
Huh you too dude? Yeah I remember watching this until really late and only getting like 4 hours of sleep before I had to go to school. Back then anime was considered "trash" and now all of a sudden everyone loves it, I love anime because of these series, it was and still is my go to anime when I want the same nostalgic feeling like I did back in high-school. P.S. I recommend Guilty Crown and Gargantia on the Verdorous Planet simillar style to Eureka Seven.
1 of my FatherFigures was absolutely Tom of Toonami. Still not sure why TH 1 of the only cool things my Mother to let me do was watch Space Ghost: Ghost Planet, and then Ghost to Coast, but it made Multar feel even more familiar than just the occasional appearance on the older HB Space Ghost cartoon as a villain that thankfully used to air regularly. Multar was cool in a way like the dudes on the back of the bus that played Magic the Gathering, and actually talked to you instead of dismissing you as some dumb kid. Tom, HowEver, counseled and guided me with his insightful and inspirational words that grabbed the experience of life, and gave us a perspective that simplified it so that it wasn't so OverWhelming.
I feel like living through the 90s as a weeb or nerd is something you had to have done to truly understand it. When you met others with your interest, it was an awesome kind of connection with them that you knew instantly made them 1 if your most cherished friends.

With the “Don’t beg for things, do it yourself or else you won’t get anything” I enjoy your view on it but in my interpretation I always felt this quote resonated not with individual characters but with the revolutionary theme of the anime. The Gekkostate state embodies this idea, because together they are creating change and protecting the things they love. The Gekkostate do not wait or beg the military to stop, they take action, organised and intelligent in order to protect Eureka, the scub coral and the planet. They do it together and they do it themselves. (Absolutely loved your analysis! I have loved and re watched Eureka Seven since it began airing and you have reviewed it wonderfully.)
The original is one of my top 5s and well thought out. And Renton growing Into a mature version of himself was personally one of MY favourite aspects. Also Eureka learning about "feelings"
I discovered Eureka Seven from those old Anime Insider magazines. Then I watched it at my grandmother's house. I like that Renton starts out as a brat that was infatuated with Eureka, and over the course of the two years that transpires in this series, Renton grows up. He starts to understand Eureka better, and he matures. It's a mecha show but the robots aren't the focus most of the time. It's the growth and relationships between the characters, and effects that war have on the world. It's a truly environmentalist anime that tries to be philosophical as well. Episodes are named after actual songs, and they have an A and B side.
Amazing analysis. I enjoyed the anime as a kid but never really understood the in-depth messages, main themes and exactly what was going on cause it was so cryptic. This clears a lot of the confusion I’ve been trying to solve for YEARS, thank you!
So, as a science nerd, the "limit of questions" they speak about in this series (if the Scub wakes up and brings its collective consciousness to bear), is actually a real thing. There's a concept in physics that states that if space itself contained too much "information" (quantum or physical objects), space itself would become dense enough to collapse into a singularity. Its called the Bekenstein Bound. Seeing this show from my childhood play with some exceptionally deep physics is such a damn cool thing man. Also, I've read the Golden Bough (its a real book) and it's essentially the founding text on the study of Anthropology. It examines the relationship between human's understanding of the world around them throughout time, from mysticism, superstition, religion, and finally, science, all being ways that humans have tried to decrypt reality, but also how each society has fallen to using such an understanding to subject each other to horrendous things such as war, slavery, murder, and control through ignorance, and James Frazier, the author, emphasizes how important it is to understand these histories to prevent it all from happening again. A fitting thing for Holland and Dewey, who were supposed to be sons of the family destined to lead humanity into prosperity again, to be reading.

I'm so glad to see a video covering this show in depth, as it seems nobody wants to talk about this show despite it being one of the more popular shows of the 00s. Most discussions around the show boil down to "Oh yeah, I remember that show; I liked it a lot," or "That was a weird show." With the climate crisis threatening to drag humanity kicking and screaming back into the dark ages, and with people for the first time in my life suggesting that maybe we should divest from military spending, the show's themes feel even more prescient than ever.
Anime doesn't get much better than E7, and I don't think it ever will. This show is beyond words. Really cool video; the show isn't talked about all that much anymore. Also, you didn't really mention it: but the two PS2 games are probably the only truly good extensions to the franchise, as they're both prequels that fit quite nicely into the narrative of the TV series whilst maintaining the spirit of the show's messages. Ruri and Sumner even show up in E7 episode 45 as a cameo. There's a lot I agree with and disagree with about your video, but you took a genuine stab at the show. There's a lot of merit to the way you discuss the show, more so than the other videos of the show on YT.
My biggest complaint with the dub is the "don't beg for things" line. Because in the original sub (at least the one I watched) the line was "don't beg for it, earn it. Then it will be granted to you." It's a much more inspiring and thematic concept than "do it yourself, or you won't get anything."
oh yeah the anime depicted at 8:38 is Gekiganger III, a 70s-style anime that exists within the universe of the 90s anime Martian Successor Naidesco, and I didn't put in any lower-thirds text indicating where it's from because it seemed like too long of a story to put in one block of text. Gekiganger was often used as a loving parody or critique of the old 70s-style giant robot shows in Naidesco's meta-narrative, so it was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of a "traditional, hypermasculine giant robot anime" and figured that the footage would work well.

The point that I'm trying to make isn't that it's unrealistic for groups to discriminate against other groups, my point is that since the anime was made in Japan, a country that benefits from Okinawa continuing to be part of their territory, framing the people who seek Okinawan independence as villainous doesn't just fuel more racism against them in the real world, it undermines the very idea of an independent Okinawa- it's not just saying that 'these people who want independence suck,' it's saying that they don't even deserve an independent country at all. Like, you can write about victims of racism being racist to other victims of racism because racism is intersectional, but it needs to be written in a nuanced manner and not like a weird psyop.
Eureka Seven is my favorite anime of all time. I think it takes 3 watches to fully enjoy the series. First watch is weird and cryptic like you said in the video. The second watch you notice all the foreshadowing and hints sprinkled throughout ,and you finally understand some of the basic concepts you were iffy on in the first watch. On the third, you know everything. You can bask in the beauty of the story and notice its flaws and perfections.
I had the same realization after watching it several times. Now I'm on my 4th watch and I'm still noticing new things! Like I recently found out that the book referenced throughout is actually a real book! 🤯
Ah yes Eureka Seven, something compared to EVA many times in the past, but has been milked so much, with low results, that now its more confusing than EVA
Funny story, this show was my inadvertent introduction to EVA. I vaguely remembered watching parts of this show on Adult Swim as kid, not sure though. Years later, I decided I'd look it up and finally watch it. However, I mistook EVA for it and ended up watching that instead haha.
This video is a masterpiece! It captures the essence and beauty of Eureka Seven, one of my favorite series ever. Like a fine wine, this show matures with age and a lot of its subtleties made strictly for adults start to become ever more meaningful and apparent. And yes, its still has immaculate style and looks incredible to this day. They NAILED the visuals in this series, minus a few blemishes in animation occasionally.
The whole thing works because of contrast between two different universes. Original Eureka is a living dream, while life of Ao is harsh and he can only adapt. Also yes, scab coral are literal aliens in the setting.

I found the opening on spotify and had to confirm with youtube that it was in fact Eureka 7 and it made me cry. We watched it as kids and i loved the anime and the meaning behind it but it was also an anime my brothers and I would watch. This video made me understand the anime better. Opening will always make me nostalgic and cry tho
Solid stuff. I really loved the first half with Renton figuring out how to actually think about other people's feelings, but the pacing of the second half and how it seemed to be painting in larger and larger strokes made it hard for me to finish. That and (spoilers for the end of the original series) how they left the kids behind at the very end killed me; I feel like the themes of love are centered around family and opening your heart completely to the people you're kinda stuck with, so to have the end basically say, "Love between adults doesn't ~actually include kids," was pretty disappointing.
Never looked at it this way, I always considered them always fighting so the end was them relaxing although you don’t really see it. Loved Axls relationship with the kids at the end I thought it was a nice ending but it does suck they don’t have a scene at the end together
I think eventually they came back for them and that was their “honeymoon” I remember I read it or found out somewhere that canonically they come back for them.

It’s better explained in the manga and novels, that’s just Renton and eureka enjoying their honeymoon. Did you ever notice a lot of kids love their grandparents and get spoiled to death by them? It’s like that, they’re too cheap to hire a babysitter so they dumped me on grandpa for a bit hahaha. For real though they don’t abandon the kids, they’re just on a date or out for a walk.
Revisiting this never gets old. Each time I watch, the chills return, taking me back to the magic of my favorite anime, Eureka Seven. I'm hoping that there will be a live-action adaptation and it also stays true to the original storyline. ❤
I watched it around 2007 when it aired on Animax Asia.. and kind of loved it. Just binged watched it all over again and here i am. I was like 15 when I first watched it and here at 29.
This series has been something I've tried to watch and understand over and over again with no success until recently. This video laid a lot of things bare for me and made sense of a lot of the crazier aspects of this franchise in a concise manner that leaves me wanting to see more.
As a kid I vaguely understood what the show was trying to say. People would complain about the 2nd half when Renton ran away from the Gekko, but it left the deepest impression on me and now I see why. Kid me viewed it as a love story with strong anti-war messaging and something about the environment -with mechs. Eureka Seven instantly became one of my all time favorites despite not fully understanding it. Standalone Complex takes the cake for cryptic moral themes imo.
Just finished this show again last night after not watching it for about 5 years. I’ve seen it over 10 times since since I was about 12 and now I’m 29. When I reached the ending last night I was literally sobbing…this show means so much to me and I can’t put into words why. Great video.

This is the first time I came across your content and for my first video I definitely loved it. I discovered this series almost exactly one year before your video and it has since become my favorite media ever, because of its aesthetic, characters, world, music and themes. I definitely agree with your statements on what made E7 great, especially since it’s ironically making the original anime more and more relevant over the years, sadly. I do agree with how cryptic it can be for a new audience though, I personally loved it, and it made me go right back into a rewatching not even a day after having finished it. But while it was incredibly satisfying to learn more and more about this anime over time, it can make a surprisingly high number of people miss out on its themes or even drop the show out of confusion. I really wish the later content had tried to expand on these themes or premises instead but I’m still incredibly grateful I decided to randomly start watching it last year. The theme's, the heart of the VA crew, the music were all perfect for its time, it was a convergence of a kid wanting to pilot mechs with the crew of his dreams. He got his wish and found out 2 things, 1. He found the love of his life, who didn't really notice him until she did then, they not knowing for sure spent the rest of the series not saying their feelings until it truly mattered. 2. Be careful what you wish for, Renton got his wish, to join gecko state! He found it was the drudgery of the life he left behind combined with the terror of combat, which he truly did not realize until the end of season one. Horrified at the death he and gecko state, his heroes, had committed left, going in a walkabout to find himself, bumping into a man and wife who desperately wanted a child but couldn't have one. He was wholeheartedly accepted only to find they were going to destroy gecko state and take Eureka away. Renton made a choice to leave this happy, loving set of parents, the wife crying her heart out as he left to be not with the gecko state once more, but protect the young maiden he fell for. All the while Holland, leader of the gekko never noticed until the last that he, the younger son of the king, was not her chosen love, the boy was all the while pining for a woman long gone, ground a woman that loved him in return. It has 7 love stories and two love triangles Hilda and Matthew, Eureka, Holland and Renton, Holland and Talho, Moondoggie, and Gidget, Dewey, Dominic, and Anemone, Misha and Keggo, Rey and Charles. All the while the gekko being AWOL military with a stolen craft, being surfer bums lfw and surfing the waves and being their own mini families. Renton still being a child himself was placed as a father, being an orphan himself struggles with 3 vodarak kids adopted by his love in recompense for a horrific deed. Even at the end he struggled to win her over, not knowing he had her as she had him when first their eyes met.
I love mecha series, but eureka seven has different spot and top 5 anime for me. The best part for me is how they depvelop Eureka and Renton character (and anemone too). I like How they make eureka from cold blood soldier to a mature woman (and mom)
how do you feel about Hi Evolution 2 basically retconning the original series out of the canon by having Eureka destroy the universes from the original series,movies,manga adaptation and light novel?
It's wild and insane, but I consider it to be in its own separate set of universes so I'm fine with the decisions. My only real problem with Hi-Evolution 2 is that it shouldn't be called "hi-evolution 2" because it has so little to do with the first and again, takes a bonkers left turn into the alternate universe situation- in my mind it's "the anemone movie" more than any sort of sequel to Hi-Evolution.
I remember watching this series 3 times, first was the art that made me feel "i've been there" but no understanding to the story at all, second was to understand the story, and the third times was for the emotion
It's always amazing seeing videos like this about one of my favorite anime of all time. I'll always defend E7 with my entire being and im so happy to always see fans, new and old, of this series. Way to transpose leftists with hippies and classical liberalism. Kinda missing the mark on the the early 2000s aesthetic. The series isn’t this “ahead of its time leftist supporting show with some weird follow ups”. It’s a post modern take on classical liberalism and 70-90s hippie culture. Aka why the series started as young 20s living “the dream” before maturing the series and ideals into corporations that managers cities and help maintain a balance. Che Guevara killed many. Made racist remarks. And put gays in labor camps. Your comparison of admiration tied in with racism in modern Japan just shows a pure lack of understanding. It’s not that you understand the show now, it’s that your political ideology has given you a way to understand something in a way less harmful to your world view then when it was weird. TL:DR dude put a terrible political spin on a show about growing up and doing what’s right.
This. The show has many more core themes then what this video is trying to color it as. For example, The Military is not completely wrong in thier desire to destroy the scub coral. The Scub Coral is literally a conquering alien species that holds mankind at thier mercy. But it's thier desire to communicate and reach a balance with Mankind that makes the Scub Coral noble, thus we can say the people working alongside with it are right. It's thier innocence we can relate to. Needles to say, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the many moral issues debated by this show.
I'm glad I could find videos like this. Eureka Seven is one of those anime that made it mainstream but still manage to be underrated. It has such depth to its themes that you honestly can only see if you watch through it multiple times. I know it's a running joke for anime fans to not have a concrete answer when they are asked, "what's your favorite anime", but after watching *YET ANOTHER* Eureka Seven analysis video, it's safe to say that *this* is my favorite anime of all time.
I always loved watching this show on Adult Swim. I never could fully understand what was going on, but the interactions of the characters and the overall messages still resonated with me.

I always tought that the RentonEureka love story was something else. Now I understand what I view as important and I know understand better why I loved it so much. I just wanted, as everybody else, to know a little bit more of what happend after the series ends... with just a glimpse I will be satisfied.
It's my first time finishing the original series after... 15 years? Now I understand the show a lot more after growing up. I introduced the show to my wife after seeing a figure of the Nirvash Type 2 during our trip to Japan, and we blasted through the show in less then a month. Funny how that works, considering what the show is about. I'm not the same person I was when I was a teenager. Instead of getting frustrated with Renton during the first half of the show, I just laugh at him for being naive, and in a sense, how naive I used to be when I was his age 😅
Yesterday I finished watching the series for the second time in decades! I had to research if more people felt like I did with this series and I was not disappointed with this video. Disappointment is all Bones studio did after the first series... As already explained in the video. Eureka 7 wasn't the first anime I watched, but it was the first to get me fully into the world of anime... Like really deep! In a time, where if you wanted to get fully involved, you had to leave the television and discover forums online and describe even more anime that weren't televised outside of Japan... Eureka was the one who would open that door for me. It was such a thrill to see the complete series on a pirate page, that I started a search for animes that will affect me in the same way. Not only combat and action anime, but with a really good history background, originality, esthetic etc... And boy, after 20 years, I have become quite an otaku. 😂 And it all started thanks to Eureka. I would love for the creators to see this video and rethink the approach of the story for a future adaptation. because something tells me that still getting away my love from the series. If they did a remake of the original, with better explanation and new storytelling methods, it would have as much potential as the best anime of today.
Thank you for posting this. Eureka Seven is criminally underrated. It should be counted among one of the greatest animes of all time. Not only because of story/characters/messages of anime are great but the background music of the anime are genius level. Naoki Sato's background score is the greatest anime music of all time in my view. If you don't believe me, watch any vital scene with paying attention to background score. For example when a wounded Eureka jumps from Gekkostate trying to find Renton. The music of Eureka Seven demands its own video.
This is probably my 1A 1B 1C with Evangelion and FMAB the thoughts of surfing waves in the air created by the planet and doing that while also bagging a blue haired baddie was all i needed to fall in love with it as a 10yr old
I've only ever liked the 50 episode series. It literally will make me bawl my eyes out no matter what. It's my most most favorite and touching show ever.
I watched Eureka Seven as a teen on Adult Swim methinks. For some reason it never quite left my mind and I've been thinking about it lately quite a lot. The music, animation and art-style really stood out among many other Anime shows at the time, the only other ones that came to mind in terms of dripping with personality and style included those such as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. Yeah, the music and art left an imprint in my mind for sure. That being said, there was more than meet's the eye regarding this Anime. Now I caught on the environmentalism message pretty early on, the teenage love story and emotional growth, yet there was a lot of context and references that I seemed to be missing to make sense of the bigger picture. I was confused for a long time and this did derail my enjoyment especially near the end, not to mention that some of the characters were quite difficult to deal with throughout the show. But, it was still a good experience overall. I've never seen environmentalism tackled like that in Anime before. Nah, I don't remember seeing it tackled that way. I wonder why... Maybe I haven't watched enough shows, I don't know. Though at first I had found it to be a bit immature, it was surprisingly mature thematically. In some ways the message is still pertinent, or maybe even more pertinent than it was fifteen years ago. If we destroy the environment due to ignorance or greed, we will effectively be destroying ourselves in the process. The only way forward is education, balance, sustainability and peaceful coexistence. For a long time now I've viewed the character of Renton and Eureka symbolizing the peaceful union and coexistence between human beings and mother nature, i.e. thereby symbolizing the hope for the future, with the added message that love knows no boundaries and that we can overcome many obstacles in life if we stay strong and don't give up on what we are fighting for. Now that I'm older I may in fact give it a rewatch as well. Great recap and synthesis. Thank you very much for making this video, I think I understand it better now. Cheers. :)
I think the problems you had with the movies, and AO, were because you had a particular understanding of the original. The original was a fantasy world, which was largely about learning from reality, facing life with maturity (both Holand and Renton), and the various aspects of relationships. It happened to be anti-military, and therefore pro-grassroots organization (which makes sense for the characters and themes), but it features a comparison of religious and scientific points of view as well, and additionally asks the question of whether different forms of consciousness experience things differently (Renton and Eureka, but also comparing humanity with Coralians/Scub Coral). It answers that by saying "we can be mutually compatible under the right conditions". Which I think is very fair. The show is largely about communication and a balanced mindset, after all. With the first movie, and apparently with the HI Spec movies (I never saw them thanks to AO burning me a bit), a big part of the show was that "if circumstances were different, the good guys would be the bad guys". That's why the series delves into multiple universes, to set things up differently. The point then, is to be open to new ideas, from anyone, and to listen to everyone equally, not just those you already agree with. Again, balanced mindset, because you never know who is right until things develop more. In the original series, the Scub Coral were the "good guys", but because they'd become too numerous, they had to go into new universes so that they could coexist with other life without exceeding the limit of questions (and destroying reality). AO was then about a world the Scub went to, in which they were actually the problem. Because of Eureka 7, we are tricked into hating the Secrets at first, but we end up realizing that the Scub are actually problematic in this universe, and so we have to get rid of them. No one is objectively "good", "good" is defined by context and perspective. In the first movie, the individual characters had different roles (especially Anemone), and so they ended up on different sides of history. Also the new Renton and Eureka didn't reach the happy ending that the originals did, saving the universe and such. Not exactly. But they got a glimpse of the original universe. Which was actually a really sad moment for me, to see what could've been if things had again been different for them. I think most people love the original series more than AO, for several reasons. But what burned me was the fate of the protagonist and a few major characters. I hated that. And I hated how the happy end of Renton and Eureka had become "oh by the way, even though we had 50 episodes of beautiful plot development and a good relationship, all of our kids are destined to die unless we ship them off to a different universe." Which does also go against "mutually compatible" aspect of the original, but again "under the right circumstances" takes more of a center stage. You do what you must, I guess? It did burn me though. So AO was visually beautiful, music wasn't any worse than the original, but the story was more of a tragedy than any other genre, so I hated it and never watched Hi Spec because of that. There's my hot take.
Perfect analysis, I couldn't have said it better. A lot of people in the comments seem to relate to the idea that E7, despite being confusing for young minds, causes some sort of... Awakening. I was always compelled to it as a kid, and the feeling it left me with just.. stayed. I wholeheartedly agree with its environmentalist message, and advocacy for emotional openness and maturity. The only thing I would disagree with in the video is the last episode. The last episode (more specifically, Renton's whole "Super Saiyan" moment) always gave me chills, and still does to this day. And although it's true that at face value, it just looks like he's brute forcing his way to Eureka... I kind of see it differently. To me, it felt like Renton using the power of love at full capacity to reach Eureka one more time, against all odds, at the end of his character growth. To me, it felt like he wasn't simply forcing his way through the power of Anime, but stumbling through hordes of obstacles (that I like to imagine serves as a metaphor for bickering) like he's finally gotten a grasp on what truly matters in his life, and he's unwilling to let it go. I think studio bones did a stellar job at making that "last stand" absolutely spectacular. With everything you've listed, I would add that E7 is an anime that, to me, is also about the power of true love.
I hate how instead of making a stright sequel they have completely gone into an alternative universe with AO, movies going into alternative universe was cool though.
They ( the staff ) put so many things in one anime and it did break my mind when I watched it in 2010 (I was about 14 at that time), but I still loved it. The evolution of characters is great, that's why I consider Eureka seven a masterpiece even for someone who has zero interest in anything but 'boy meets girl'.

Your indepth analysis scripting editing and choices of music are excellent(especially the combination of GlitchMob and Florence was very fitting during Korra) I accidentally stumbled on your channel again when I searched for Eureka Seven, thank you for your explanation, I rewatched it 8 years ago and it was always a little nebulous to me. Finale some one with the right Words to such a great series. Eureka seven Was my first and still favourite show and AO can't live up to to the original und honestly it feels like an early concept that wasn't full thought through.
Watched this my senior year of college and it will always have this melancholy, nostalgic tinge to it because of my trepidation at having to take the next step after college. Also, just looked up the bluray and it’s actually affordable. Haha, I sold my complete dvd set for an absurd amount of money back in 2013 or so.
This, Big 0 and Scryed were the big 3 animes I would catch back in the day not fully understanding any but the 3 would shape my taste in anime for the rest of my life
I rewatched it last summer, I liked when I watched it as a kid but I recently realised knew i was missing so much. It was very nostalgic but I didn't notice all these themes as a kid, it's jumped up to being one of favourites, definitely in my top ten anime of all time
My guy, I don’t think you understand either series to be honest. The show isn’t about environmentalism or leftism. Yes, that is a huge plot point, but it wasn’t the whole point. It was far more complex than that. It was about coexistence of two species, growth of characters, about learning that what you think might be wrong an accepting other people’s ideas. It was about reality altering beings so evolved that they could ascend. It was so much more than OOGA BOOGA lefty environmentalists good. 😂 It even features turncoats military that aid the rebels and features a Kingdom rather than a bipartisan republic.
I’m a year late but great video! I really loved Eureka Seven in my teens and this makes me want to revisit it. As for AO I feel like in retrospect it’s easy to see certain attitudes in the original that show a more neoliberal attitude hiding under the radical aesthetics. Take for instance the show’s homage to the computer tech industry in Jobs and Woz. The former especially being the Californian ideology incarnate. This doesn’t necessarily detract from the message of the original, but it does make it seem like the writer’s room that would cast a sequel as part of a tech startup styled high gloss NGO feel a little less surprising.
