Fun fact: "Savage Garden" is a reference to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series. Referred to the idea that beauty is a savage garden, always having a degree of strangeness and danger to it. From what I can make of the story, these kids are playing in their room at night, when suddenly a fairy appears at their window. Then the titular Swagman captures her, and out from the pits of Hell rise some weird skeleton creatures, which shrink the sister and put her in a cage, and in their clumsy escape they break a jar of beetles.

Actually, Swag is an old English term for stolen items. A swag bag is literally the sack one stuffed stolen goods into. The term Swagmen was associated with drifters who would often have to steel to survive, so they're traveling pack also gained the term swag bag.

That Savage garden song was huge with all the girls in school when it came out. I remember in music appreciation class every Friday my teacher would let kids bring their CDs and tapes and she would play them for everyone to listen to. Every girl would either play that or a backstreet boys song. My mom also used to blast that song through the house in the morning while my dad was at work

"Swag" in old english meant 'Anything taken or likely to be taken by a thief'. So 'Swagman' is essentially 'Man of things desirable to thieves' 'Man of stolen things'... AKA a thief, or taker of things. so Swagman is essentially just an old, archaic form of that; "Thief."

Legend has it that Savage Garden named themselves after going to the Savage Garden (industrial/goth club) in Toronto. Like a lot of Toronto clubs it does not exist anymore.
