The Enchantments of Washington is one of the premier hiking destinations in the State of Washington if not the number one. Each year 100,000 visitors make their way to The Enchantments. The influx in foot traffic and lack of maintenance from forest services and visitors had caused permanent damage to the delicate ecosystems in the region. As a result a permit system restricting access to a maximum of 24 people per day to stay overnight in the Core Zone at any given time. Although, from our experience, the day/thru hikers has no limit and I think needs to be addressed as well.
Each year in February if you want to stay overnight you must enter a lottery and a couple months later you find out if you were lucky enough to get a spot. It took ten years of entries and I finally got a spot.
