Where in the bible the New Testament does it mention tiding? I can't find it anywhere. In the Old Testament it mention it as a sin offering but when Jesus died on the cross he forgive all our sin. And I Corinthians 2 Paul said to give offering of what you can but not what you can't. So I find it very confusing. Please explain. I love your teaching and my the lord bless you heaps.

Hey Corrie! This is a great question. Christians aren't responsible to follow all of the Law of Moses, so this is an interesting topic. It is pretty clear that demonstrating trust in God with finances is a big theme in Scripture. In the Old Testament, offerings were a type of worship with finances, since livestock were a big aspect of life and money. In the New Testament, giving is still a central issue. Jesus required His disciples to leave everything behind in order to follow Him (Mark 10:28-39) which could be seen as an offering of all of one's possessions and life. Paul even referred to this apostolic lifestyle of complete self-sacrifice as being "poured out as a drink offering" (Philippians 2:17 and 2 Timothy 4:6). Jesus told one young rich man that wanted to enter the Kingdom that to do so would require Him to sell everything he has and become Jesus' disciple (Matthew 19:21-24). Jesus also talks about investing finances in eternal things, rather than just storing them up in this temporary world (Matthew 6:19-21). So, God really teaches a life of complete financial trust and surrender, but not all have been called to live like those original disciples. We know this because Paul gives a basic outline about how believers should work hard and live a peaceful life of character that draws the community around them to Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12). We also know that the early church did take up offerings and care for its ministers financially because Paul took up an offering for the Jerusalem church (1 Cor 16:1-4: 2 Cor 8:1-9:15; Rom 15:14-32) and because Jesus and Paul taught that the apostles and ministers have a right to be provided for and paid by those they minister to (Luke 9:1-6 and 1 Timothy 5:17-18). The church has had to determine what the reasonable amount ought to be since God does require that believers give to the things of the Kingdom and take care of ministers. It is likely that because tithing was a requirement of the Old Testament law for finances given to the things of God, because it was mentioned by God in Malachi, the last prophet of the Old Testament (with a promise that God would provide more than enough for those that financially prioritize His house [Malachi 3:10]), and because Jesus said when rebuking the Pharisees that they should continue to tithe but also not neglect "justice, mercy, and faithfulness" (Matthew 23:23) the church has implemented it. It seems reasonable based off of these Scriptures that for believers like the ones' Paul speaks to who are called to live peaceably, ten percent is a grounded biblical standard for investing in the Kingdom of God!
