The same can be said about almost any type of box installed during construction, i.e. switches, phone and cable outlets, old vacuum hookups in houses with a centralized vacuum system, etc. I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but the 16" separation of studs rule only applies to load bearing walls. Non-load bearing walls the stud separation is usually 24". Also, rooms, bathrooms, staircases, etc require a light switch much closer than 16", or 24", away from the entrance, so an extra stud is put in place to accommodate those. Don't get me wrong, I do believe this video is very good information and will most definitely will help people not only find studs, but make better choices in some cases where to mount certain items. Thanks for taking the time to make, and post the video.

@_.KLYDE._
@_.KLYDE._ 6 лет назад
Well obviously they don't know that. Not everyone is a drywall technician, an electrician, or know everything about the houses you know? I don't know that. Why? Because I have no use for that. If I'm going to do something, I'll look it up to make sure I do it properly.
@michaelmckesson6997
@michaelmckesson6997 4 года назад
Actually shutting off the power to that one circuit may not help you at all. You don't know how the electrician ran his wires. Very often you'll see multiple runs of wire down one single stud. They'll use plastic clips that you just snap in the romex wire. Often if a electrical box is on the same stud, they'll just run the wire around the outside of that electrical box. Which means you could be poking a nail into a romex wire on another circuit all together. No worries 110 volts probably won't kill you unless you've got a hot plate, or blow dryer drawing power threw that circuit. 😁

Thank you for this information. My husband passed away a couple years ago. RIP CAJUN! He was a contractor and I know I’ve heard all those measurements before. But for the love of God! I couldn’t remember if I should start from the outside wall, corner wall where there shower starts, or if the were spaced 16” or 18”. I knew they put extra in for outlets. But I don’t have an outlet near my toilet paper holder. Which pulled out of the wall taking parts of the drywall with it. I’ve been stressing and wishing I would have learned more and forgotten less. Thank you to everyone that is on any RU-vid video giving out information to help others. Much appreciated!

great video DIY .... but a little extra info for those who live in a top floor apt (like myself), or a room of a home with nothing above except the roof - the studs can most likely be 24 inches. To be safe, you can grab any magnet around the house (not small ones off fridge) and run across the wall to search for screws.

If you tap along the wall at varying intervals, you will hear a hollow sound which = NO stud. When you hear the sound become more solid, you have located a stud. Make a mark at that point. You can do the nail trick if you like to make double sure. From there, measure 16" in either direction as needed and you should land on a stud at each 16" measurement. Another way is to use a lamp-without the lamp shade- and hold it close to the wall at angle and look for the joints where the drywall was screwed or nailed to the wall. Make a mark everywhere you see those joints and double check measurements and voila!

For someone who just needs to occasionally find a stud, this will work fine. I bought a good quality stud finder and found that it saves a lot of time. My comment is that the spouse or SO will be mightily displeased if you keep using pens to mark walls -- pencil is much easier to remove!
@MrDiyDork
@MrDiyDork 9 лет назад
+Etamni Etamni Yeah, this was intended to help someone that probably doesn't do a lot of diy at home and find themselves needing to find a stud to hang a shelf, tv bracket, etc quickly and doesn't want to go spend money on a stud finder they will rarely use (if ever again). It works like a charm for situations like that. I agree, a pencil would be a much better idea. I used the pen mostly because it would show up better on camera.

For 8' walls measure down 48" from ceiling, this is where drywall seem is. Use a good strength small magnet move sideways along seem. For 9' ceiling measure down 54". I use a small super magnet. Not all studs are 16" on center because there may be intersecting wall on other side. note, Not all studs are straight, not everyone knows how to frame a house so studs could be out of level.

You can usually find studs by gently pounding the wall with your hammer (smooth face). If course it's better to use an electronic stud finder. Tricks like in the video work fine, but I would still peck the wall with my hammer, just to verify, because there could be cases where a person put in an extra stud simply because an outlet was required at that exact place, so that stud would not be on layout.

until you go to hang a TV on the wall and can't find a stud this way because the jackass who built your house put one stud at 16 inches and another at 14 and the next at 18. yes I tried this method because I knew what distance the studs should be but when I went to bolt the tv mount to the wall it would not bite a stud so I cut a strip of drywall out 6 feet long by 6 inches tall and wouldn't you know it all the studs are at random lengths.

Glad it worked great for you. I had the same issue with my electronic finder. It was so frustrating, I got rid of it.

Thank you man, I bought a stupid stud finder that wasted my time and money. Your way actually save me a lot trouble with a TV mount install.

that's pretty good info. And I guess if we want to double check where the conduit is located, all you need to do is turn the power back ON, and try the nail test :)

TY ..your info is by far the best and most logical and practical I could find …but I’ll test it to see if it helps me out… the house was built in 1968 by a known relative who LOVED to CUT CORNERS AND PINCH PENNIES soooo I hope this works for me …will let you know … I was also concerned about electrical wires🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️as this relative… DID NOT WORK BY THE BOOKS… it was HIS OWN HOUSE 🙄 and inspector s didn’t even look at work bcuz….they… were buds…talk about shabby shit… he even built a pool cabana across the top corner of the septic tank… again … NO INSPECTION… Amazing what takes place in this world…at least here in the GOOD OL USA 🇺🇸

Not all studs are at 16 inches. Some have them at 14".... some done by non-professionals have a variety of distances and were never checked by building inspectors, HFH homes are wider as well. To check where the stud is you can use a strong narrow magnet too. I use a magnetic fastener retriever that has a magnetic tip. Drywall if screwed onto the stud with metal screws.... so that's where the stud will be.
