Great photography doesn't always have to be found in far flung corners of the globe and I do prove this regularly in my videos. Take a look at the thumbnail of this video as an example, which is the location of possibly the best image in the entire upload. Great photography opportunities present themselves literally anywhere and this is something that we all, as photographers with a creative endeavour should keep in mind. In this video I travel to one of my favourite places in Scotland in search of new images, namely the Cairngorms Mountains area, which for me, has almost become an annual pilgrimage.

Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of near defeat....you're about to get rained out, overwhelmed by kids, and you put up a stunning shot of 2 dead leaves on a bus stop roof. I could have passed through that stop a thousand times and never seen anything worth shooting. What a great shot. The initial shot of the roots is something I will keep in mind the time I visit a nearby lake that has wild seasonal level fluctuations, which reveals lots of roots that I have studied and stared at, but never shot. Thank you for this shot.

there really are images everywhere! even a bus-stop roof 🙂 only last week I got a lovely image in the doorway of my local hospital where I'd had an appointment. blown leaves had congregated in the entrance. I only had my phone but still got the shot.

Great composition of the roots. I love photographing roots too, but never clean up the scenes as I like the messiness of nature coming through in my compositions. The leaves shot looks deceptively simple but is gracious in your final form with all your thoughts in it. And your last photo of the trees with the grasses in front is my favorite. I love the effect of the three second exposure creating some movement in the grasses thereby softening the scene. Congratulations on this nice set of images 👏🏻

I echo many of the comments from folks who say they now 'see' better after having watched you find compositions seemingly out of chaos or by simply looking up or turning around. I particularly like the bus stop cover image! Brilliant! Your new jacket also caught my attention. I try to keep my clothing a bright as possible as it might help in an emergency. Could you include the brand of that bright red/orange jacket? It looks very functional and comfortable! Thanks!

The jacket is an interesting one it’s about 30 years old and it’s made by Montane. It’s been up in the loft for most of that time. I recently lost a bit of weight and it now if it’s me again. It’s lovely and warm but I’m not sure you can buy them anymore?

Such a beautiful carpet of the tree roots and of course the selection you shared 🙂 agreed... great images are everywhere... when we clear our minds of the clutter that allows the beauty to reveal itself to the camera 🙂 It was Canada's Freeman Patterson who taught me to distinguish between diagonal and oblique lines... the fine difference is that diagonal lines go from corner to corner in the frame... oblique lines move across the screen, but not corner to corner... the tree roots were oblique... the processed leaves are much closer to being diagonal 🙂 I know it is a picky distinction.... 😊 Thank you for sharing your day 🙂

Its' and interesting phenomena - the way that what we take to be 'the familiar', and pass on by accordingly, always has more on offer. Whether we pay attention and realise the opportunities or not, there are layers upon layers to be uncovered if we do invest. Funny you going for trail runs... do you carry a camera while running? I'd be terrified of being hit between the eyes by something and not being able to respond to it! I do like a slow and contemplative photography, but i'm also a bit addicted to that rush that comes from an unexpected opportunity (like in the fruit and veg aisle at the supermarket, for example!). I only carry my phone on trail runs so I do have that. Sometimes that’s all we need. I’m also fond of the rush but it’s often not there for the taking.This is where the flow wins the race.
