I'm 45 years old and it took this long for someone who is in their early twenties to explain these constellations, how they work, and how I can find my way with them in a way I could comprehend. I also got to learn how to identify Betelgeuse, Rigel and Sirius, which I am guessing is also called the dog star. All of a sudden so many things make sense and are clear... You'd be a wonderful teacher, Alfie.
Dude this is like an actual workshop, you get stuff explained, get a little practise, and usually even have a good laugh as well. this is bloody brilliant mate :D
I live in the Southern Hemisphere and Orion is the first constellation we see, I love going to bed with Orion in our night skies, it disappears during the winter months because it comes in early hours of the morning from 1am-3am.
hey pip, what, the sun, and the moon, never mind corporal just keep your eyes open, , this is getting me sick, cause it means we are fools , they lsyed out your cities with it,m ur in the northern hemisphere, ,,, now I understand why I cannot see the moon, the sun disappears almost now in winter,, the space inbeetwen ur homes is for the elements, wake up, not fair

I live in Australia, I was told by an ex-army driver that the arrow of Orion always points to north, I haven't tested it much but it usually does point to north every time I have observed it
I took a photo of the sky above my house and that shape of Orion stuck in my head although I didn't have a clue what it was until 2 days later your video appeared on my suggestions as if by magic. Thank you .
The sword points to the south. There, easy peasy. Or if you want Orion’s Swordpoints towards the equator so when in the north it points south when in the Southern Hemisphere it points north
dont know jack shit about stars but i keep seeing this constellation all the damn time and in multiple continents and hemispheres its almost as if its impossible to miss lol
In our South Asian country like Bangladesh here is many people who are used to determine time at night. This practice came from ancestors when there was no Clock to keep time. The go for Fazar salah by seeing the position of this Orion and still they are accurate.
Once Orion sets in the sky, you can look at Leo to get oriented. If you look at both Orion and Leo, it's even easier. The lion Leo is facing in the direction in which it is traveling, towards Cancer and Orion. The lion's feet are pointed southward when it is at its highest point.
me too!!! i just started. but i live in shanghai, it;s impossible to have clear skies. i got 5 constellations, around 40 stars, 3 planets, 2 star clusters and one nebula. unfortunately i don;t know how to use my nearly broken telescope
Why some people hard to know East , West , South and North ? In Kiribati most of the people easily know the four corners by Venus at the West in the evening and the southern cross at the south . If you know the two corners the other two corners East and North easily know as the opposites .
In the 70s to pass the Coast Guard test to be a charter boat captain I had to learn to navigate with a compass and sextant, but especially how to plot a course. I'm told it's even harder now. Using stars would always give me my latitude. Longitude not at all, needed a good watch for that.
You explain it well! i I just watched a previous video of a posh dude explaining the same subject. He was confusing and when he explained it as a picture, he said it resembled a person as he pointed out the chest area etc. I laughed cos thought it looked nothing like! your description was a hour glass which was so much better. You should take up teaching your description of orion could be explained to any age group and i think they would understand. Good video!
Nice, Alfie. Thank You. I live in the southern hemisphere - in Cape Town. So I have to mentally reverse everything you are describing from the UK point-of-view.
thanks man (i think i remember some arse say something about himself living int the wrong side of the equator ) informative and easy to listen to making it easier to understand
My first childhood constellation was the big cart/ big Bear. You call it the big dipper. My Mother always then wanted to show me the small cart. But my friend was the big one. In my eyes ZHIS is the constellation every child recognises the first. Later came the seven stars ( Plejades). It is strange Orion came so late, since the best known scifi-zv show in Germany back then had this name and we always played it, long before Star Trek started. Your video and the stuff about finding with him the direction is great!
Very cool. I learned a lot. I’ve been looking at Orion a lot lately. I’ve had a vision of Betelgeuse flashing on and off in the night sky like a huge alarm on Dec 12-12-20
Sun rise in the east as a general rule. I almost fell off my chair lol.... where else lol. ……….. you should be a teacher, I never knew this always looking for big dipper to work out where I was. I always see orions belt. Thanks a million.
@@MsNetwizard Grow up, be an adult, don't try to control the words other people likes to use. As for the idiot with "take the lord's name in vain", piss off with that superstitious nonsense :v.
am not religious person, but agree here with you, we should be careful with our words not to hurt others feelings. I think however the presenter didn't did it intentionally to offend anybody. That's how we all react sometimes, casually. @Gordon, it's not about controlling others words, OP is just highlighting these words were felt offensive to him. If we stop respecting each other, and keep saying whatever we like, without any consideration to others feelings, this planet (which is already) will be a big mess, and we will keep searching more for other worlds beyond Orion!!
@@hakeem-ji If you start living your life trying not to offend anyone... get used to disappointment. It's impossible. Full stop. And therefore not worth putting above your own integrity. People choose to get upset about an obscene amount of trivial or downright moronic things. .. So say what you want. I like to say religion is cancer personally.
Hey Alfie, love your videos, I'm a fairly new subscriber but I've already watched all of em! I really want to get into bushcraft but it's something I'd rather do with a mate and my friends aren't into this kind of thing :( anyway keep up the awesome work, your videos never fail to make me laugh.
Orion has been briiliant from my point of observation the last couple of weeks. Many thanks for the informative and entertaining upload. However I must disagree with your Bard of Avon - the fault does lie in our stars.
The bell it rings is unless it's near the horizon you could say it's moving and the North star varies very little and where I live doesn't go below the horizon like Orion.
A bit long winded . Find north by looking at Polaris star . You can use the Big Dipper to find Polaris, which is also known as the North Star. Notice that a line from the two outermost stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper points to Polaris. And notice that Polaris marks the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper. The northern sky is a large clock, with Polaris at its center. Notice also that the big dippers nightly voyage around the North Star resembles the swastika in motion.
