My best friends have all kind of went different ways in life. When we get back together from time to time it gives me a lot of confidence because they’ll say stuff like “wow, you’ve substantially improved since the last time I heard you play”. It’s hard to see your own growth but I love the moments when people you care about notice the work you’ve put in that you’ve had a hard time noticing yourself.
I think this is what I'm missing., that feedback from people that are mad and passionate about the same thing as you. I learn a new chord or lick and realise, "People won't think of it anyways, it'll just be my little thing I know". I need to find a circle like that, feels I can't find any of that where I am now. 🤔
Kiefer coming in with the parent "What is your 5 year plan/goals" talk. 😅 I'd like to believe that environment promotes the improvement in a person? It's quite the task when you're in an environment that easily distracts you and makes you forget about the goals. Also, congratulations on the Grammy (certificate/certification), not sure what you got it for, but thought to pay my respects to the legend in the making Kiefer!
I'm a journalist - an editor in my second job told me something I take with me to today. "There are two ways to make it any business you care about. Either fully become/naturalize yourself as someone who succeeds in the business or build that second persona that succeeds in the business. In the first, you become more natural and dependable, but it requires you to sacrifice yourself fully just to even have a chance. With the second, it will take energy to maintain two personas, but you can succeed and then clock off to do what you want to do." I imagine for us musicians, it will always be the former on the whole that's preferable, but with the second, it helps in smaller cases when we have to do things that may not instinctively be what we want to do, ie networking as an introvert, focusing on the business side of being an indie musician, doing corporate/gig work to support our own creativity.
