Those bottom-feeder recruiters will also request at least 3 references to "verify" your skills, but they are trying to build a network. They will call them, and then request 3 recruiters from them as well.

Wow that's a great idea. So many people rely just on sending CVs online and patiently waiting for the result. But oldschool "show up to the doorstep" can definitely make you stand out cuz it's non cliche and even if it doesn't work for many times, eventually it can happen. Biggest tip for any developer, and I mean any developer at all. If the job sounds interesting, just apply for it. I don't give a single shit if you only check 10% of the boxes, do it anyway because nobody is going to fit 100%. If they do claim to fit 100%, they are lying through their teeth.

This is surprising to hear. What about if they say 1 year experience in ____ software or language. Wouldn’t it be kind of bad during the interview to be like oh I actually haven’t used AWS (or whatever software) before but I’m willing to learn on the job lol. Or do you think it could be okay sometimes?

@@stevengold - most languages are super similar, that I have gotten away with winging it before. Then doing a crash course before I start the job. In terms of services or software, I suggest being familiar with the terms and how they are used. If you have 3 years experience in using Azure cloud, it's okay to go ahead and say you have experience in aws. I've used them both extensively, and there are Nuance differences but overall they are the same.

Very good video! Basically how I started my career (start at a small company). Also to the last point: Most companies want to retain their employees and are happy to support their ambitions (if possible and if it makes sense for the business of course). Don't be shy and talk to your manager, you'd be amazed what's possible.

I don't know.. I got such a trauma. I am a Mid Level Full Stack, and in my last experience I got fired in 3 weeks from a start up cause they thought as I had a previous experience I was under a Senior of knowledge, even after I mentioned in the interview I am not a Senior they decided to hire me amyeay, but after a while they fired me straight away. I felt a piece of shit.. I am a father, and it's been 1 month and a half without a job. Now I am super afraid to every job I apply for to happen the same thing again. Get a job and don't be good enough.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Don't let that experience define you or your destiny. Consider it a mismatch in what they wanted and what you offered. What if the role was flipped and you joined a company and it ended up not being what you were really looking for so you bounced. Does it mean the company was bad? Not necessarily. It could have just not been a good fit. Hopefully the next job is the right fit for you.

This happened to a good buddy of mine before......he got a big salary bump into another company and left his relaxed and well managed tech job for a company that dealt with federal contracting. New company had an asshole team lead and suddenly they were saying "we meant to hire someone with 7 years of experience," when his resume clearly had 1 - 2 years of experience. He needed to learn Ruby and they were supposed to give him 30 days of training before starting on project. He was let go in the first week.....it was fortunate he was able to go back to his old company because he left on good terms and that company offered no severance package for their screwup. If he had the money he would have sued. I'm currently in the process of getting another job as a UI/UX developer now as my current one isn't my passion at all and saddled with structural issues.

will add it to my video ideas list. but some quick thoughts. to do it well usually requires you be fullstack and have good mastery of a lot of things. you also have to manage finding clients and stuff. not for everyone but it is flexible and some people really like the freedom. that said, if i was trying to get a job starting out and it was taking longer than i hoped, i would probably look to freelancing and try to find simpler projects to start getting more experience.

I do want to mention that if you have a IEEE membership, they have an awesome community of professionals that are more willing to help you... and to be honest I haven't used it in a few years but it is another way to network... in my opinion networking is key to landing that next job... But like you said, don't make it all about your self, you need to show genuine interest in what the other person really does, and sprinkle questions geared toward what you need answered through the conversation here in there... I've noticed that keep their attention a little longer.. anyways good luck guys

I thought it's possible in Japan to get a front-end developer remote job without prior experience since Japan has many tech companies. But I guess have to go to Tokyo and get an entry-level job for experience. Just like any other. Get a year of experience then from there get a remote job.

A lot of companies will be hesitant since it's harder to mentor. Focus on looking for companies that are 100% or nearly 100% remote.

It can be much harder since it's usually expected that new devs will need some mentoring which is harder to do online. Even with a little experience some companies want you in the office for awhile to gauge how well you manage on your own before letting you go remote. I would probably focus on companies that are 100% remote as they are more likely to have systems in place for helping new devs while being remote. The more experience you get, the easier it gets to get remote jobs.

I studied all this and understand it, but I kept accepting lower paying jobs in accounting throughout my career because I was single and couldn't afford not to work. Now I'm old but I don't feel old, actually I feel smarter and understand more. I retired a year ago, and was completely out of debt and own my house. However, I had some major upgrades done to my HVAC system and now I'm in debt again and don't have enough savings. I now have a partner who helps, but I really need to go back to work. I'm worried no one will hire me because of my age. But I've been watching these videos and reviewing HTML, CSS and JavaScript along with Excel VBA and SQL. I understand all of it, and also have the accounting knowledge now. I worked for a company that designed accounting systems and started accepting jobs in accounting instead of coding. How can I break into this field or is it even possible. I will start trying to create some of websites and apps as you mentioned. When I took the Java class I was good at graphics.

Stick too accounting or why not build your own accounting software or Web site / app. Learn a language stick to it learn it inside out and build up your portfolio. Age doesn't matter! Clean quality code does!

I've looked through the course to see if the how helpful it is, but it wasn't really a thing when I started. Wish there were more resources like this when I started. I would say before getting a hint, try googling the problem and get used to searching for answers. Don't just google freecodecamp... google about the problem. That will improve another skill.

I think the full course JavaScript video freeCodeCamp has on RU-vid does a better job of explaining JS then their course.

Depends on how much experience you have because you are trying to overcome two hurdles, If you are new, getting a remote job can be challenging since it's harder to have someone available to mentor you. A lot of companies don't want to deal with the extra work to handle taxes, benefits and similar payroll issues associated with foreign work. You might have more success as an independent contractor. That said, if a company is already hiring employees from your country, then the second hurdle becomes less of an issue so look for those.

NOPE, if you verify all infos on 'FRONT END' with job specifications, they don't need algorithm, PLUS check all the learning/exercices books on HTML/CSS, Java Script, none of them have algorithm like C++ or Java or Nodes probably would have, I have Java and an exercices books here with me, I SWEAR just checking some pages is like YIKES WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?!! ROFL so I have gone thru O'REILLY HTML/CSS now, going into my JAVA SCRIPT.... just like you self thought new Front End programmer. One thing that is helping me a lot, I've been a secretary over 40 years, I know my Microsolft software Word, basic and advance and Excell, Web paging for me is the SAME THING only difference: CODING on the browser since it is not 'a paper' page.

If you are solving problems with code, you are using algorithms. But often the word is thrown around to refer to more complicated solutions. Really depends what kind of projects you work on. If you go into finance, expect more math. A lot of algo quiz stuff isn't used on a day to day basis, but again it depends on the company. There are plenty of opportunities to start with less of that stuff and then grow into it as your skills increase.

I have nothing against the Philippines. I'm sure there are good companies there. But I have to be honest, I've received a lot of messages about positions and jobs that aren't so great. I also know of companies outsourcing there for much less than they can pay people here with folks working more hours. Not saying I agree with that practice. These people are skilled at what they do. It just simply doesn't make sense to work for a company in a country where the pay is lower when cost of living is higher here.

at the moment it is tough across the whole economy. until macro-economic stuff changes, it will probably require patience. do you have a portfolio that includes projects that are commercial in nature? have you just been filling out applications on linkedin and those kind of sites or have you been walking into places to try to talk to someone?

Unfortunately since I live in a small city and there are no local software development companies, I have not had the chance to walk into places to ask for a job.

location does make it harder. by commercial, i didn't just mean e-commerce thought that is an option. what i was getting at is that if you build things similar to what tech companies build, it's easier for them to see how you can fit into their needs. obviously, as a single person don't expect to build something to the same scale as a large company. for example, if you are interested in working for companies that build analytics software, try to include projects in your portfolio that visualize data through charts and stuff like that. the trick is getting your resume and portfolio to someone who will actually look at it rather than getting filtered out by hr or software filters.

usually for remote work, companies want to know you have enough experience to work independently without tons of mentoring. that's a hard sell for new programmers. this video is not focused on remote work. as for getting a job without connections, it is harder but still doable. even more challenging in an economic situation like we are in.

@@jamescross We struggle with the prices and salaries ratio, but someone who receives US salary can be a big fish here and live like a king. Thats why i want remote US or north European job.
