@FarmerSlideJoeBob

Yup. It's hard to find the person you can connect, where there is no ego or narcisstics behaviors and it's just about the music. I was happy to had some short-time bands and it was perfect but a bit too short to me, when I was studying.

Also - like he said open mic nights - go where there is a nearby college/university with a great music program. Yale New Haven CT has my fave open mic ever - and I love going out on weekday nights, weekend is too much. It's at a place called "Stella's". After a Grateful Dead song Stella Blue, but all kinds of music. Grateful Dead fans love music in general, anything authentic. The band's individual and cummulative musical influences/experience/life was quite a variety.

Great message. I've been a musician for over 50 years. In high school it was other kids who also wanted to play. Then in my 20s I got involved with an amazing tribe of musicians as you say. They would create outdoor concerts and all sorts of other collaborations. I owe my musical development to this group of people. Now nearly 50 years later I am in a new rural environment and seeking my local tribe. You have reminded me how vital this is! Thanks

The communal aspect of music making is soo important. It might be the most important actually. Sadly, there's not a lot of communities near where I live but maybe my band will be pioneering in that regard.
@joshbottz

Agreed. I think all it takes is just one or two bands to start something. The first scene I was in was this underage scene for 15/16/17 yo’s at scout halls around town. One young band threw the first gig, just them, and the next gig had 4 high school bands and already a big audience. It grew so rapidly because there was a big need for it, these pre-18’s wanting to get drunk and see live music, obviously can’t go into a bar, so we’d pilfer our dad’s liquor cabinet and go to these scout hall gigs. It all started because one band of 15 yo’s wanted to play live outside those lame high school band comps. Was epic.
@WolfgangXP65-67
@WolfgangXP65-67 2 месяца назад
I feel the same way. Thankfully though, there IS a community some miles west of my town that has a very vibrant scene, but me having to live so far from there makes me estranged from really going into the scene every day.

After already playing music throughout childhood/teens and learning basic theory, i decided in my 20s i wanted to get serious but going back to school didnt seem feasible. So for 5 years i took lessons from a guy in my town who was a berklee graduate. He walked me through the whole Berklee jazz keyboard method curriculum and I basically got a berklee school of music education for 30 bucks a lesson. And what I was paying him for wasn't so much just the knowledge but also the accountability of making sure I practice cuz it'd be embarrassing to come to the next lesson having obviously not practiced lol. Anyway, hope that helps someone.

Good account. This is the education landscape nowadays that is replacing tradition education. It’s what I offer too, my 10+ years of keyboard study/practice, which I learned the hard way and also going through a University course, boiled down into a coaching service that will help students achieve the same results in at least half the time. This is the ‘digital education renaissance’, something like that. You can develop the skills, then it would just be a matter of finding your homies.

Also, I’d be interested to hear about your process with producing a large volume of work/staying consistent.

I never found my tribe, hence why I had to give up. I’m doing okay now, moved on to being a writer now, but it did hurt to not find any like minded musicians. Even at a music college, I struggled to find people who I really vibed with or who vibed with me. My music taste was always pretty weird so that never helped.
@RainerRilke3
@RainerRilke3 2 месяца назад
Same here. Had a lot of high school bands but then I found myself as the only one in the scene who wanted to pursue music more seriously as a lifepath, so when I tried to start my own project I couldn't find the musicians. College folk were too busy with classes and playing in their college concerts, while all my friends from the gigging scene didn't vibe at all with my music (I like post tonal music, atonalism serialism spectralism etc. but I hate academia so I wanted to bridge the gap towards the public at large). After years I just gave up and now I'm also a writer. It's easier to connect with people online and there are way less material barriers than music in order to fully express your vision (gear is expensive, bandmates hard to come by and music without the experience of live performance feels almost pointless to me)
@alfiemckeough3762
@alfiemckeough3762 2 месяца назад
@@RainerRilke3 yeah I get what you’re saying. I understand completely. The only difference with me is that I never liked live music, and still don’t (sensory issues/social anxiety and I just prefer studio recordings) But yeah my tastes in prog metal, alt rock and ambient/experimental never really got me anywhere. Even amongst people who seemingly had the same music taste just didn’t want to collab or didn’t commit. I’m still trying to find my tribe, not necessarily in music, but I just really struggle to find like minded people. I just feel so… different
@joshbottz
@joshbottz 2 месяца назад
Interesting! I'm also a writer, and one of the reasons I love writing is because for me it's a very solitary thing. It's fun to build something with my friends, but with writing, I love that it's all me, and the actual process is so much more peaceful and smooth, writing in the morning without any other inputs. Thanks for your input, it looks like there's way more to this discussion then I realised. I think I got quite lucky with my class at music school generally speaking, to find people who are into the same thing stylistically. All the best finding your people, they are out there!
@RainerRilke3

@@alfiemckeough3762 I get you completely. There may be few of us, but you're not alone my friend. We are thrill seekers, always on the look for new sources of inspiration and beauty, too uncompromising for comfort and too conscientious for debauchery. I don't know about you, but I often find 'normal' people too dispassionate and 'abnormal' people too unhinged and unserious. For how much current discourse seems to center around 'diversity', seems to me like it's all just a countless myriad of roads towards the same handful of goals, everybody chasing money and clout in their own little unique ways. But what's the point in having a trillion precious and unique beings if they all converge in the end, lining up behind the same age old fantasies of power, comfort and/or blind hedonism? I kinda miss the times when you could spot a fellow weirdo from a mile away (I live in a 3rd world country so I got to live my teenage years in severe cultural lag, which vanished overnight when the internet came along), when being unique was a statement instead of the norm. Now counterculture is dead and we turn to the internet like some kind of panacea for the problems our disintegrated society generates. Maybe one day we'll find our tribe, maybe they don't exist yet, who knows, but if not then we will make it so.

In my experience, university is a pretty bad place to meet collaborators, everyone is too busy to do extra work (*) and most drop out. If you're lucky, you may make friends, but they're unlikely to match your musical interests, plus they're just as busy as you, and the few that graduate might not stay there, as they're likely to return to the places they came from *and those that find the time and energy to work beyond uni, usually spend it on trying to create something of their own, not on other students projects

Dang, that’s a shame. I could have added some more context. I got quite lucky with my class, and it was from the performance papers. I guess it really comes down to the course itself. If they have more collaborative projects, like forming ensembles, or for production courses, linking up with other musos to record and mix them, then it’s more possible. If the course less practical and more lecture style, I’d say it will be harder. But then again there are probably university groups that you could join.

Some more ideas I had today are that you could post something on a music community page on facebook, or make a little poster that you could put up in music stores ‘hey guys, I play xyz, looking to start playing xyz kind of music, keen to jam!’ That might work.

Just do your thing solo and maybe you’ll cross paths. Also there might be a youth scene. When I was 17, I was part of this underage gig scene, these bands of 16/17 y/os playing at scout halls. so many young characters around town chilling at these gigs. All the best!

You could go to a music store and ask whether they know people who play your music and would be interested in playing together. You can also go to (if your city has one) a music school where people can follow lessons. Ask them whether they know if anyone would be interested or if you can leave an advertisement with your name age number and what music you play.

if your area has AT least 20k ppl there is at least one Guy out there. plus you will never fond bandmates to do only what you envision by yourself prior to meeting them, thats precisely the point : collaborating means that everyone brings sth to the table and what you Cook together most of times miles ahead of what you envision solo initially. you dont need someone that shares exactly your vision but someone with enough of the same references and with whom you go along and have FUN playing music, After that stuff will happen, guaranteed

i agree, "two heads are better than one" hell, three, four, five heads are better than one when it comes to music. if any of you are busking, the more of you playing instruments the more money you potentially could make. the sound of your music will be fuller and richer, and you can play longer and any mistakes you may make while playing wont be as noticeable. every time me and my band busked with a guitarist, keyboardist, and harmonica player, we made way more money with the three of us than i ever did busking alone, just dont do what we did and spend all of our money on drugs and video slot machines in the convenient store 😂

I can sing and play drums well. Those who ran the jam nights are there to drink 5 big mugs of beer to a half an hour before they go up to stage to perform a bad cover version of Killing in the name of or something else that's been played to death while the drummer plays really sloppybassdrum couse they're drunk. I don't like the stuff they're playing, i don't drink so it's acward to try to socialize with drunk people while you're sober, they would need accept me and i would need to humiliate myself to be accepted. And they are no audience i would like to go and play a drumsolo. This is why i'm not into the jam thing, it's badly played cover songs. When i was younger i used to think the jams ment that you were jamming but it's not that. Few times i tried to ask people what songs you like to play if there would be some that are familiar to me, the drunken response was "just everything" like what i'm supposed to answer to that lol. I've had two bands where i connected with the players on that deep level and i truly know what is like but it's really hard to find and sustain. My experience of music school was pretty similar, there were these jams in the middle of the school week and everybody, even few teachers were there getting absolute blasted drunk! And i was asked to play Rolling Stones I can't get no satisfaction. That boring basic drum pattern through out with no fills oh no i turned it down and got myself a beer lol that was in 2017 and i was 17. I'm from Finland if somebody is wondering. I'm gotten fustrated by the people in music here, it's all heavy metal that i don't like. It's been really hard to find players to connect on that deep level or even players at all. I like Rock, Rock 'n Roll, Jazz, Funk, Blues, 60's Pop, Reggae, basicly all the more rootsy stuff and i make my own songs too. Ps if this sounded like mean rant it kinda is couse i'm a Scorpio :D but yeah i love music but have not found my tribe yet

That's really relatable actually, because I don't drink either, and I felt this a little bit in previous music scenes I was apart of. Where I live has a massive drinking culture, especially a student drinking culture, so it was a bit like that. But your comment also makes me think there's way more to the story than I've talked about in the video, like for example in Finland it must be very stylistically leaning towards heavy metal aye? In New Zealand, there seem to be 2 major styles as well, which NZ Reggae and a kind of surf/garage rock. I was fortunate to meet other soul/jazz types in my town and vibe out.

I just moved to a new city and it’s been really hard to find other people to jam and collaborate with like that. As someone who’s done with college it’s getting harder and harder to make friends even, let alone musicians to make albums with.

Hmm this seems to be a trend I’ve noticed from other comments, I can’t really speak exactly to that experience. We need more jam nights, open house sessions and collaborative apps for this kind of thing. Another commenter suggested that you could make a little flyer and put it up on music store board, or make a post on a music community page. Good luck!
