Is it at all possible to find the z score without referencing the table? Like is there a way you can calculate it by hand?

There is a way to calculate it by hand, but you have to know how to find the integral of the probability density function. It's much easier to use the table, graphing calculators, or other technology.

I am having a hard time understanding why the z score for 95%... what is the rule for up or down, if .9495 and .9505 have both +/- 0.0005? which one do I use?

Since .95 is in the exact middle of .9495 and .9595, you would find the average of the two z-scores. It's directly between 1.64 and 1.65, so you would add the two and divide by 2, which is 1.645. (This would be for 95% area to the left.)

What if I have a table with areas on the right how do I find z score for the area on the left side?

You would do 1- area to the right or look up the opposite z-score. The area to the right of the opposite z-score is the same as the area to the left

can someone answere me if what will I do if I cant find my value on z table I have a 0.4950 and I cant find it on the table should I do? just pick the nearest one the 0.4949 or 0.4951?

If it isn't on the table, then go to the closest one. If it's exactly in the middle (not closer to either), then you find the average of the two and report 3 decimal places. For example 1.645 is a z-score that is important in critical values for confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. The area to the left is in the middle of 1.64 and 1.65 so we report 3 decimal places.
