It's a shame so many get hit by cars. Alberta found a solution for this, by covering the road in a rough texture, snakes have more traction to cross, and there's less heat on the road so they're not coaxed into warming up on it. Thought you might found this interesting!

Reminds me of the time my family saw a strange brown shape with some foliage moving through the water at a local pond, and we were trying to determine what it was- my mom was convinced it was just a stick, but my dad and I were like “I dunno, it kinda looks like it’s swimming” and just as my mom was getting adamant and loudly went “IT’S A STICK!”- bloop! It dove under the water. “......okay maybe it’s not a stick.” It resurfaced a bit closer and it turned out to be a nutria dragging some nesting material through the water, but IT’S A STICK became an inside joke of ours for quite a while! (Also worth mentioning that this wasn’t an actual argument- even though my mom raised her voice it was all in good spirits and it was because she was emphasizing her insistence rather than getting angry or anything. I dunno, probably nobody thought that but I feel compelled to clarify this for some reason? I guess I don’t want strangers on the internet to think my family is the type to genuinely fight over this kind of thing! Mostly because I do know some people with families like that...)

I loved the info on the cottonmouth. I lived in Florida for a lot of years and have heard so many scary stories about them. How they will chase on land or in the water. They'll swim at you from across the water to attack you in your boat. Scary stuff! Nice to know the truth.

@Lilith-Rose
@Lilith-Rose 3 года назад
Well I've seen them swim towards boats when people poke at them in the water with a paddle or end of a rod etc, but to them the boat is the closest bit of "land" or floating debris to hide under/on and they don't know where the threat is coming from so really they're still only trying to escape and get away from you since they're more vulnerable and exposed in open water. That's where most of the stories of them "attacking" and "chasing after" people comes from, and I kinda see the point. When you poke a venomous snake with something to get it to move away and instead it swims straight at your boat and tries to climb in/up the side that's a pretty scary situation and would freak most sane people out (yes us herpers are far from sane but that's not a bad thing haha)

@@hiaimrandom4629 i volunteered in South Africa and we had a black mamba in our housing at one point (we also saw them periodically on the reserve). It was super chill and just hungout on a chair until the staff removed it. We noticed it was on a spare chair behind the table after we ate dinner (so 10+ people were in close vicinity to this snake and it never once got aggressive). Maybe we got an uncharacteristically chill snake, but idk... Anyway long story short I don't think any snake would intentionally "chase" anyone down unless it felt threatened

I had someone contact me over a few snakes during the summer so I was giving them pointers on telling the difference and watersnakes looking more "derpy" was actually one of my descriptions 😅. Yeah, in places known for venomous snakes people will often intentionally run them over, falsely believing they may have just saved someones life by murdering an innocent creature, which is really sad. As important as these warnings are, I wish they were more empathetic to the animals with stuff like "unprovoked they're unlikely to attack you, as they're not aggressive and are just trying to live their life too. Also the primary purpose of their venom is, in fact, for hunting, not for a defensive weapon, so they're unlikely to waste it on you". But of course these warnings are calibrated for idiots and children so if they don't genuinely scare you and make you think the animal is evil and going to hunt you down if you look at it wrong, they won't work.

funny story about corn snakes. I had a pet corn snake for many years growing up down here actually in FL and was very familiar with almost all species of wildlife having been an avid outdoorsman my entire life as well. My father, a family friend, and I were out in the middle of the lake on our boat one morning and as I'm pulling a fishing rod out from the slots where they are stored on the boat, out slithers a corn snake. My knee jerk reaction was to yell snake prior to the recognition of it being a harmless stowaway. I look up and tell everyone this only to see our family friend, a big burly dude, standing on the very edge of the bow in a position reminiscent of a stereotypical 1950s housewife on a stool holding her skirt escaping a mouse. There was obvious contemplation as to whether the water would be a better place for him to be right at this moment. After I told them it's harmless and all that, i then became immediately concerned that my pet corn snake somehow managed to stow away on our gear and follow us for a little adventure as it looked identical to mine in every way. That concern was alleviated with a quick phone call to my house and we let the stow away go back to his hole for the duration of the trip. Years later another similar incident occurred, and now we have a snake stick as a permanent resident of the boat just in case...

A: Always spray yourself down with Off Deep Woods when going outside in the dark in Florida if it's not like under 60*F. The mosquitoes and no-see-ums have exactly zero mercy. B: I love that you both ran towards this cottonmouth. Almost everyone who lives here in Florida is _terrified_ of them. They get a really bad rap for being super aggressive when, in reality, they're not.

Definitely. If you can't find any (or left it at home), peppermint or lavender will do in a pinch. Just pick and crush/rub on pants/sleeves. Luckily, peppermint grows just about everywhere. Just be *absolutely sure* of what you are looking at before handling. Square stems, spear head shaped leaves, and strong mint smell. :) www.gardeningknowhow.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/peppermint-1.jpg www.thespruce.com/thmb/9VS4JAoLTfAARuwY7VR14sFMDhU=/3206x1803/smart/filters:no_upscale()/growing-mint-1402628-closeup-d55f829e9b4d487d942a2edec4343eab.jpg hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/images/mint-leafs-in-the-garden-royalty-free-image-543204012-1534949098.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.752xh;0,0.0673xh&resize=1200:*

Love the info on the cotton mouth! I live in Florida and have lived in Georgia for a while, and they really are chill creatures in general. You only really see em when they are slithering AWAY from you. My dad and little brother have also (accidentally) tested the info you presented near the end on the cottonmouth, my younger brother stepped on a huge cottonmouth and my dad walked in front of it and the snake did absolutely nothing. Great video as always!

And the water snake, but you kind of went over that one- it's usually people thinking water snakes are cotton mouths and being corrected 🤦🏻‍♀️ Most people here use the "Zoro mask" and the "Hershey's kiss" pattern down the sides to ID. Thank you for sharing the cottonmouth research data. I live in SW Florida and get tired of hearing the stories. My experiences are all pretty identical to this one - rare or non-threatening threat display, slow moving, no strikes, no aggression, no chasing.... they are lovely. I use the supra-ocular scales (brows) as a great way to identify from a distance.
