Finding A MAJOR ISSUE Sealing Up A 1982 Corvette 700R4 Transmission. How To Seal It Up The RIGHT WAY

This is one of those videos where it does NOT go according to plan. The idea was to make a video showing how to seal up a GM TH350, TH400, or 700R4 the easy way, and how to get rid of all the pesky leaks. Of course, the transmission has other ideas. Watch all the way to the end to see what happens!

AAMCO master technician here. You should NEVER use silicone on 700 pan gaskets. There's a small hole in the case right below the servo cover. The gasket has a notch cut in it to go around that hole. That hole is the exhaust for the fluid in the servo. When the 700 shifts into 2nd gear, the band applies. When it shifts into 3rd, the band releases, and that fluid drains through that tiny hole. If the fluid doesn't drain, the band will be half applied, and glazing or burning its self up. I've seen it many times where the use of silicone plugs that hole.... Go to your GM dealer, get the right gasket, it will be a black paper one like the original, use weather strip adhesive if you think it needs glued, and torque to 140 inch pounds. Problem solved.
@haleyy68

Absolutly correct. And also on all the 1st Gen 700s they were notorious for blowing the front pump seal out. I had this happen 2 times on a new 1984 Z-28 will less than 30k miles. 3rd repair they updated the seal to a new locking type seal and never had another issue. Sold it with 120,000 still working fine.
@pentastarobsessed8427

You should glue the gasket to the pan instead of using silicone, the silicone will allow the gasket to push out unless you allow the silicone to completely dry before tightening it all the way.

Nice vid Ben, dealing with mine now. Mine (74) has a 400, just had to replaced the pan gasket, because my trans stopped shifting, ended up being the filter pickup tube was loose and just sucking air, no fluid getting to the case. after everything back together, like I always do left a puddle in the garage the next day. No leaks the day before weird. so when it gets warm again, I can pull it out and see where its leaking. BTW, another trick to those pans what I used to do when I worked for GM, was to get a ball-peen hammer, and with the ball of the hammer, hammer in gently the bolts holes in the pan, they warp sometimes and look like a cone.

These old gm transmissions especially the th350s love to leak, it seems like no matter how hard you try to seal it all up with fresh seals and gaskets, carefully torque everything, they still find a way to leak. Pretty much every th350 I have ever seen leaked, usually pretty bad too.

Apparently the pump seal fails there due to high pressures only in that location. (Pressure regulator valve) Trans techs advise to silicone the lower pump bolts at the same location as they may leak as well. P.S. I replace all my vehicles with aluminum trans pans. More contact surface and never use cork or rubber gaskets. Steel enforced silicone or paper. Difficult to "squeeze out".

@randallorr3730
@randallorr3730 Год назад
What your dealing with there is just age and heat. 1982 was the first year for the 700R4. If you replace the torque converter seal be sure to put thread locking compound on the outer part of the seal. Those had a tendency to blow out especially when you replaced the seal. Not sure why other than the new seals might be slightly smaller. I will be honest on that vintage transmission, when they leak it usually always has to removed and resealed. The early 700s just seemed to be that way.
@kennydemartini2169
@kennydemartini2169 Год назад
Correct. The earlier 700 pumps need to be modified to keep from blowing the seal out. You need to separate the pump. The oil return hole in the cover needs drilled out to 1/4 inch (later ones were at factory). Press the bushing out, and use the 1/4 drill and make two notches 180 degrees apart on the inner edge where the bushing sits. Loctite the bushing and press it in. Stake it where the notches are. Wire wheel the paint off of the new seal, and loctite it in too. Get a retaining clip off a later model 700 and put it on the pump to help hold the seal in.
