Royal Air Force corporal Richard Davies was deployed on an exercise in Cyprus in May 2019. Someone towing a jet engine trailer ran into his left heel, causing his foot to fold in on itself.
Richard was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome in April 2021 and three surgeons collectively agreed that amputating his foot would give him the best outcomes for the future.
During his rehabilitation, Richard was encouraged to compete in the 2023 Invictus Games. The challenge and competition became an important part of his recovery and he stormed to victory in the pool, claiming gold medals in all four of his swimming disciplines.
He has now turned his attention to archery, and hopes to make the GB Paralympic Archery team for the pathway, aiming to compete in Los Angeles 2028.
