The idea about the ants reminded me of a scene from Malcolm in the Middle when Dewey chanced upon an anthill in his backyard. Dewey: [to the Bible teacher Helen] Like Pastor Roy said, how God is so much bigger and wiser than us, and trying to see what He's thinking would be like an ant trying to see what I'm thinking. Helen: Yes, exactly. But we can trust in His wisdom, and have faith that He is watching over us. Dewey: Like me with the anthill in my backyard. I spent days watching the ants, trying to figure out which ones were good, and which ones were bad, but they all just looked like ants, so I started smiting all of them. Helen: Well that's not - Dewey: I was smiting them with the garden hose, and with lighter fluid, and with the lawnmower, and to be perfectly honest, I think I went a little crazy with the shovel. Those ants could have been praying to me all day, I wouldn't have heard them. [ponders] There was nothing they could do about it. Helen: But, I don't think - Dewey: Really, it's the same with us. There's nothing we can do about anything either, so why worry about it? Hey, this is making me feel better. Helen: Well, that's good, but - Dewey: I guess all we can do is live our lives with as much kindness and decency as possible, and try not to dwell on God standing over us with a giant shovel. Bye!

Kindness and decency comes from a christian established culture we currently have in the west. Imagine a culture where killing and rape is good and glorified and it reigns over the earth. What would your goodness do to better the earth. Vikings for example or even the mongels are examples of such cultures. You should drop to your knees and say thank you Jesus even if you dont believe in him. Your way of life is shaped by the bible and its teachings.

Every time I hear scientists talk about the possibility of life out there, with all their Fermi Paradoxes and other abstractions, I think about the fact that UFOs are real. These conversations then take on a medieval character, as in angels on the head of a pin.
@morphixnm
@morphixnm 3 года назад
@@bro4539 that is not what I said. What I said is that these kinds of conversations have a kind of artificiality and quaint insularity to them for anyone who has done the research. Only if you do the research, which takes both scientific curiosity and effort, will you move beyond knee-jerk reactions. For example, I have been studying this phenomenon since 1968 when, at age 12, I heard nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman give his first general public lecture on UFOs. The day before he had given the same presentation to the Detroit Society of Engineers, and from there he went on to present at Los Alamos. That presentation was so rock solid that, even as a 12 year old, I knew this was a serious subject. In all these years now I have read hundreds of books, attended hundreds of talks, and met hundreds of credible witnesses. I have also followed with interest the many books published by mainstream scientists regarding the probability of there being intelligent life out there, starting with the book "Intelligent Life in the Universe" by Sagan and Shklovskii (1966) where the broader reading public was first introduced to a statistical stab at the question based on what science knew at the time. We now know that there are perhaps five billion planets in habitable zones within our galaxy. This sort of fact also makes some conversations a bit quaint. In any case, anyone like myself will have made obvious conclusions about UFOs a long time ago. My question for you is this: what serious research have you done on the subject?

@trumpingtonfanhurst694
@trumpingtonfanhurst694 3 года назад
I'm with Hawking, we shouldn't attempt to contact who knows what out there, it's just common sense. Murphy and Finagle tell us that. Additionally the argument "We've been beaming signals into space for 200 years" isn't valid in comparison; those diffuse non-directional signals degrade to undetectable levels in less than a light year - a monstrously powerful signal directed exactly at a nearby star from a huge radio telescope is an entirely different thing. Listen, not send.

The argument is sound except for the portion about waiting to see if we’re going to attack them. If resources are fundamentally scarce there is no way they would wait until we can not only claim them but defend them to intervene. If resources are abundant then it’s moot because there is no point in conflict outside of religious or philosophical issues.

One argument I hear in favor of the Fermi Paradox is that an intelligent civilization could colonize the Galaxy in a hundred thousand years. What's being overlooked, is that maybe the Galaxy has been colonized by lDNA based microorganisms. I mean we might not be a threat to aliens for many thousands of years, but there is a point where they would have to squash us, and it would have to be before we reach that point. @@User-jr7vf- i think it’s basically the mathematics of chance that would suggests that if other intelligent life exists, chances are it has probably been around for millions (or hundreds of millions) of years longer than us. There could be intelligent life that has only been around a short time, but this is much less likely. Imagine how much more advanced we would be if we survive a million more years…. Now multiply that by the 100 and you understand the assumption. It’s also possible, of course that we are the first form of intelligent life. However the sheer number of planets in our universe and the age of the universe would suggest this scenario is also highly unlikely. Another possibility is that other intelligent civilizations have come before us, however they have all gone extinct. Spooky!

Good evening Snap - You can not assume life has come into existence because of probability alone - this is a very large misconception - just because the ingredients for life and the solar system dynamics are favourable, does not mean that genesis automatically arises - a very large emphasis has to be placed on the difficulty for primordial molecules to undertake the process of self replication in the first instance ! Try to imagine what molecular mechanism would be needed for this to be possible and then it would need to find a way to protect this mechanism in a soup of other molecules. However, having said that, I will concede that once this process is refined then life will flourish from adaptive radiation across a planets different environments.

It's rare to hear someone speak intelligently on Great Filters and the Fermi Paradox. Nick Bostrom is one to echo these ideas that finding multi-cellular intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy, especially if it independently evolved using some other RNA/DNA molecules, would be disasterous news for us. And I agree with Fillippenko's criticism of Hawking at the end, but let's give Hawking the benefit of the doubt and assume he knows all of these objections. I would guess his warnings about broadcasting our existence fall into a more special class where there are fewer nearby listeners with both the technological ability and incentive to attack us. Any superpredator could have already left technology nearby to destroy us anyway; and if they are far away, our broadcasts will take time to reach them, but are very unlikely to be an important reason they accelerate their efforts in our direction. In short, our broadcasts make very little difference except in very special cases, which are not really worth worrying about, and I think Hawking was probably aware of this.

Maybe there space ships are 10,000 times bigger than ours and that’s why they can speed travel through space. Our rockets are big but They might be the size of a baseball compared to their space ships there could be the size of earth itself. That’s quite possible.

Comparing humans to ants is a ridiculous theory IMO because we have the capacity to interact and communicate with other beings, and have our own technology. I bet aliens that are super advanced would actually be more interested in us because of tge the fact that they may not have a complete history of their own evolution, and would be able to see how an earlier civilization evolves.

My feelings are there are almost certainly other forms of intelligent life out there, but it’s probably so rare that they are just too far away. This whole meeting aliens thought means that there would be a way of travelling faster than the speed of light, maybe no matter how advanced you get speed of light is still and always will be the limitation. There could be a civilization out there 5 million years ahead of us, but if light speed is the limitation and they are 20 million light years away of us. We wouldn’t even notice them for another 15 million years. And since we only started broadcasting 100 years ago they wouldn’t know of us for 19.99999 million years. Maybe we are just limited by physics.
@kenadams5504

There is one exception to the light speed limit.During Inflation at the Big Bang ,the fabric of the Universe was created in a fraction of time that can only mean movement faster than the speed of light.If aliens billions of years more advanced than us have figured out how Inflation happened ,they may be able to move faster than light.
