I love the beginning of E1M3 in DUSK. The sound of Crows and the dusk setting, the falling leaves from the tree next to the church is just so nice.

@@HerbMessiahyou should try HROT. It’s like quake from when it first released in the 90s, but it also has a lot of unique mechanics as well. It’s set in Czech Republic, and most areas in the game exist in the real world. I played it after I played DUSK, definitely a worthwhile play. Tho some of the sections are jank, I think it is intentional since the game was made on its own engine and everything. The community around this game is pretty small, and I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure civvie made a video about it too. The game is like DUSK is that it looks boring, but it makes up for it with other aspects of the game that are slowly hand fed to the player. If you wanna feed your dusk appetite, if you feel DUSK’s 3 episodes did not scratch your itch, HROT is a nice game to play after all is said and done.

19:02 It's the same feeling I get while walking on an empty mall at midnight, after most people have left, most shops have closed and no one but the lightning, empty seats and cleaning personal accompany me. It should be distressing, it's liminal, empty and somewhat dark, but it bleeds comfort, peace and familiarity. It feels right at home.

a small little cozy spot i love is in Gloomwood, the very last phonograph in the fishery, right before you get to the mines. its a very small, cozy cabin that i just get lost in. sometimes i can just lock the door behind me, crouch by the fire, and let the horrors of the city of Gloomwood not bother me. i can relax, but the feeling of progress makes me need to continue on.

Cozy spots for me in games are the menu screen in Half Life 2 for the Water Hazard chapter, the menu screen for Hollow Knight when I set the theme to Lifeblood, and the balcony in the third chapter of Celeste. The menu screens are water themed, and the view from the balcony is pretty.

I feel really similar about Voices of the Void personally! I remember hearing about it a while ago and, despite the general eeriness of the game, it can feel really cozy once you get yourself settled into it, always having a home base that you can come home to and really clean up and make your own. I’ve been looking for another game that can give the same comfortable feeling I get going back to base in other games but it’s been hard to find

the first time i watched a video essay that wasn't an accident of yt autoplay was a jacob geller video, "Artificial Loneliness". watching this made me feel like that time again, i haven't felt really relaxed like this for a long while now (ultrakill doesn't help with this either). thank you so much man. really. someone said something about voices of the void too, i think i should play some of these cozier games more

I'm glad you mentioned Crow Country. A lot of the time i would just walk, not run through the environments, taking in the atmosphere. A lot of the lived-in rooms devoid of filth and death in Signalis are also very comfortable, especially the EULE dorms with the bunk beds, the mirror and the fairy lights.

it's things like this that really make me wish i had a better memory, but some examples of places in games that have given me this feeling personally are the living room area in animal well, countless areas in the mario galaxy series, the small warehouse thing on gm_boreas in gmod, the main room of dishwashing simulator, a few of the bases I've had in various sandbox survival games, and I'm sure many more places that my brain refuses to dig up right now. some of these evoke the feeling stronger than others, but i do get that same kind of comfort feeling from all of these. it really is nice to have a place to sit and not only relax, but truly chill out and let your mind rest. i think that's why the mario galaxy areas stand out to me more, as when i first played those games video games were only fun for me, as i was just a kid and had no lingering worries in the back of my mind as i do now, it let me feel more at peace and have a greater connection to those areas

A place in a video game that holds a special place in my heart is Rookie village in S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl. This is where all my runs started and everytime I would get done with some task, I would go back to the village. Sometimes I would go back there just for the hell of it.

for me, sonic mania’s sound test/debug menu evokes a similar feeling of comfort, especially with the music literally being titled “comfort zone” the menu is lowkey kinda eerie but sitting there trying to input the super sonic flight code just makes me feel at peace

I found your videos through Ultrakill, but this I think this style of video suits you really well too. If anything, I think this video proves that you can do different styles very well, and I enjoy them both. Keep it up! To answer your question, I really enjoy the benches (savepoints) in Hollow Knight. Together with the exploration aspect of the game, it really feels like you are out on an expedition, finding places where you are momentarily safe, and resting before continuing on. The music especially helps this feeling a lot. My favorite one has to be the one in an abandoned tram, where the bench is just one of the seats of the tram itself. You find this place quite far away from any other savepoints, and the fact that the place you sit on is not a predetermined asset (the bench) but a diegetic element, coupled with the fact that the music plays from a speaker of the tram, distorted but not in a creepy way, really gives you this feeling of finding a safe place by yourself and resting for a while.

Fantastic video. It made me reflect on a lot of things. Feelings of anxiety and comfort: they go hand in hand, don't they? When I was little and was forced to sit in hallways or small rooms, I imagined myself living in this space, where I would sleep and where I would put all my things. I also used to be incredibly anxious when playing any video game. As that fear gradually subsided as I got older, I forgot about the feeling of comfort that some spaces provided. I feel like that's what's missing from most of the games I play these days. One such place that I still remember is the home base from Patapon 2 and 3. Your base in the second game is a village under the stars, in the center there is a huge party going on late at night, people dancing and feasting. If you scroll further, the music becomes muffled and the sounds of nature at night can be heard. In the third game, your base is located in a huge cave, in the light of the torches you can see the rock paintings that were made by your ancestors. The sound of a hammer hitting an anvil echoes in the cave. If you go outside, you will see the starry sky once again. I'll try to rediscover the places in video games that have brought me comfort. Thank you for making a video on this topic! I would love to hear you talk more about things that interest you or are dear to your heart.
