Today’s world is all about having more, being better than the rest and doing things faster. It’s all about having as many labels, titles, and credentials, and that to be successful, they need to always be one step above the rest.
During my 20s, I was in a constant state of discontent. I found myself yearning for recognition at work, to be looked up to by others, have my name in the local newspaper, anything that would feed my ego.
But as I was feeding my ego’s ravenous appetite, I was also watering the seeds of suffering. I would experience short episodes of joy but they were only short-lived. I was unhappy because I had no contentment within.
This reminds me of the boy in The Giving Tree, and I saw myself in that boy who was genuinely happy as a child but got caught up in the world’s definition of success.
In the end, our happiness lies in being content. It is not about being complacent or giving up our dreams or not having dreams but it’s about being grateful for what we have instead of being too fixated on what we don’t have. And sometimes, we need to just be and practice stillness to realize that no matter what, everything is as it should be. Just like the tired boy in the story who learned to slow down, sit quietly on the tree stump, appreciate the moment and find contentment within.
