Out west have two sayings Iron is the mother to gold-
Iron gives birth to gold.
Out in Nevada even just out side Las Vegas they have holes dug in red dirt looking for gold.
The Adirondacks is full of Iron and full of old iron mills. I use to live near Benson mines that had the largest open pit Iron mine in the world

My grandfather worked during the late 1920's to early 1930's at Utah CCC camps building horse/hiking/Model T Truck trails and timber fencing for the public & government usage, along with environmental improvements where needed in the National Forests. He had the same good memories to talk about that you are expressing.

Did he plant trees red pine or Schoch pine they are not native to the U.S. Here it was because of volcanos made the soil to acid and there is gold

I use a Whites GMT Goldmaster E Series that helps on deciphering lode gold gaung rock from gold carrying mineralization when both look similar.
