Season 5 Episode 16 "The Softer Side"
The team encounters a teenage boy (Dominic Scott Kay) who collapsed from severe pelvic pain after playing basketball. The boy was born with a condition called genetic mosaicism (46, XX/XY), or both male and female DNA, and the boy's parents inform House and the team that the boy is unaware of his condition. They chose a gender for him when he was born and raised him accordingly. However, when his condition worsens and his life is threatened, the parents wonder whether they made the right decision. Meanwhile, Cuddy and Wilson suspect something is wrong with House when he starts acting way too nice.

Love it when House says “you give birth to a freak of nature, doesn’t mean you can treat him like one” he is so blunt lol

@Venetii_
@Venetii_ 5 лет назад
@@parahumanoid No it's not. A 'freak of nature' is simply something that is very, very unlikely to happen (unnatural). He isn't saying the child's a freak, he's being blunt by calling the parents out on treating their child like a freak. Try to understand before you comment calling him rude and an asshole.

@@Venetii_, do you seriously believe that attaching "of nature" to a loaded term applied to a kid in his presence makes it all OK? I don't.
@Venetii_
@Venetii_ 5 лет назад
@@parahumanoid dude. It's a definition. He's saying the child's condition, having both male and female DNA, is not very common, a freak of nature. Quit being so emotional and realise that 'freak of nature' is not a loaded term. Grow up and try to understand the scene, thank you :)
@parahumanoid
@parahumanoid 5 лет назад
@@Venetii_, in that case, a freak is just an abbreviation of the same notion. And historically, it is. Might just as well use that. I don't need growing up, I'm old enough to know what constitutes complete lack of care for the feelings of those around, when they are in a vulnerable state. Also, when I say he's an asshole, I am not being overly emotional. I am voicing my judgement on this behavior. I have the right to just by the virtue of being a free man.

You could also see it like this... the doctor robbed the family of the chance of sitting down with his son and properly talking to him about his condition when he’s a bit older and able to understand properly what is happening. The doctor disregarded the mother’s wishes which is a offense to her profession, it’s not right no matter what she might feel the parents know the child better than her and have their reasons
@Nakima666
@Nakima666 5 лет назад
@@gabrielgzz7585 I never said that the doctor was in the right for telling them, though. The problem is that the kid could tell that something was going on, and the parents weren't doing anything to help that process because they themselves were too scared/ashamed. A kid needs their parents most when something goes wrong, but these parents weren't stepping up and being there for their kid. The mom should be angry for the doctor saying something, yes, but she could also be freaking out because now she actually has to do something about her kid rather than pretending that everything is okay. It's a complex issue, sure, but actually acknowledging the problem is the first step in getting anything resolved. The parents weren't even doing that. Keep in mind that the parents' attitude about their kid almost killed him.

This is one of the most interesting episode of House. The kid has simple dehydration - if they brought him into the clinic on any other episode, House would've pegged that in under half a minute, got the kid of fluids and sent him on his way. But _this_ particular episode...It wasn't just the parents' paranoia - House has dealt with difficult parents before, and he's managed to shut them down in the past. No...This episode is interesting because House lost his _edge._ He's on Methadone - Heroin without the high as he puts it. It completely eliminates the pain in his leg. Without that pain, House doesn't need to focus on the puzzle to ignore it - without the focus, House doesn't see things. And because he's not fighting back his temper due to the pain, he's acting nicer... It was because House was _nice_ to these people that nearly got the kid killed... The end of the episode has House come to this realization and he goes off the Methadone. It's sad because it's one of the many times that seems to confirm that House can either be a brilliant Doctor or he can _not be in pain_ - ...but he can't have _both._ It honestly kind of makes the season where he goes to rehab and gets clean to be rather frustrating.

Parents get told that their over-reaction caused a misdiagnosis that nearly killed the kid, they still mad. Some parents just are so ignorant, ya its their kid but that doesn't magically let them over rule everyone in regards to the kids well being. A. J. It’s hard to explain. You just... kind of know. People are who they are; just like some people prefer blue over red, or classical music over rock, it’s just how they are. Some people need to experiment before they can feel sure-sometimes they just... don’t find one they fit completely or, they don’t even fit any. The latter cases are genderfluidity and agenderism respectively.
@TheYoutubaki
@TheYoutubaki 5 лет назад
@@a.j.2362 I'm a trans guy, I'd like to explain it as best as I can. I grew up female and I was expected to do stereotypically "feminine" things, like being graceful, playing with other girls, being cute, playing with "girl's toys" (like dolls), like boys, wear makeup, wear women's clothes, etc. But, even though I tried to fit into that role as hard as I could, it never "felt right". I had always felt like I wasn't supposed to be doing all these things. It's like being somewhere where you feel you don't belong. Instead, when I did stereotypical "boyish" things, I felt a lot better. This is what many people call "dysphoria". When people say they "feel like a boy", they usually mean that they feel more comfortable, confident and content with behaving as a boy and being accepted by society as one. I could go on talking about this for ages but I don't want this comment to be a million words long, so I wrote some examples. I hope I helped, have a nice day! :)
@a.j.2362
@a.j.2362 5 лет назад
@@TheYoutubaki Now I'm even more confused. If you were allowed to do all that as a girl than you wouldn't feel like a boy? I mean I've never acted girly or wore makeup or dresses or played with girl toys growing up and it was whatever to everyone else. So maybe it's your parents being too strict about those things? What do you think?
@TheYoutubaki
@TheYoutubaki 5 лет назад
@@a.j.2362 It's not about what others make you do, it's about how you feel when you act as a girl. That's what we call "gender identity". Intersex people, or hermaphrodites, are completely natural. Make sure your child is aware of their biological condition, so they can choose their own hormone treatments or lack-there-of. There are so many intersex people who make others aware of the consequences of parent choosing their hormones for them. Parents are supposed guide their children, not drag the kids down the path they want them to walk. Edit: let me clarify for Patrick Nyman; let children be aware of their biological condition until they are OLD ENOUGH to make their own decisions. A lot of intersex people who's parents/doctor picked their hormones ended up transitioning to the other (or original) gender. Dont use horomone therapy until they can pick it for themselves or there is a legit medical reason like death or something.

How will they keep convincing their kid to take some 'vitamins' for the rest of their life? What if the kid did feel like a 'girl'? But he's a 'boy' so now he's just confused and feel like a freak. Even the dad wanted to come clean. Mom wasn't really worried about the kid --- she said it herself, "what you did to me".
