me too, totally drained me. No wonder, i got 0 dopamine from all my effort. Didn't care about what i did, just wanted to do good in eyes of others, didn't like the community and was not that competent. Ended up depressed and feeling empty.
Perfect breakdown and really related to many of these. Passion is not born from day 1 and sometimes it's take trial and error and it requires suuuchhh patience. You sometimes have to go through a bunch of things and realize what you don't like, to find what you do, but it can be hard. Love how you brought the science part in as a cognitive neuroscience lover
Really enjoyed this! Identifying the life I wanted to live was key for me - not just what I wanted but why I wanted it. Everything starts to fall in place after that. Thanks for sharing.
You sir have earned my like and subscription. Im in a part of my life where I feel completely lost and I’m 25 years old. I have been hoping job to job for the last month and nothing really seems to be hitting right for me. But your advise from this video has really opened my eyes. Keep your head up and your eyes looking straight ahead at the goal in sight. I really appreciate this video. Thank you
Great advice for those in their 20s trying to figure out what career they may want. I also think this lends its self to any age group who may be struggling with the love for their existing career and are looking for a change. Always great tips Jon, cheers!
This is a great topic and you're only in your 20s, I'm in my 40s and helping people finding their freedom path. At your age it's really crucial to DO IT! Great video!
Thanks for sharing such an inspiring video! "identifying the life you want is critical! "Can't make a living doing your passion if there's no demand for it." "We have to step outside our narrow perspective of what is possible within our careers" "These are some things that will add clarity to your search: - Do you like abstract ideas or more concrete tangible solutions? - Do you thrive in a fast-paced high pressure environment, or - Do you enjoy slow-moving traditional sectors? - Are you detailed-oriented or big-picture focused? "
I’m 22 and I feel like I’m wasting time. I really want to be a vet but did so I have research on it and it doesn’t seem worth it. Especially the student loan debt to pay ratio and burn out rate. I’m still learning myself so it’s been hard to find any other thing that I would enjoy. I know that I love animals and science.
It sounds like you've identified the subject matter that interests you. However, what about the workplace characteristics that you enjoy? For example, do you like to work with people or things? Do you like abstract ideas or more concrete tangible solutions? Do you thrive in a fast-paced high pressure environment or do you enjoy slow-moving traditional sectors? Are you detailed-oriented or big-picture focused? These are some things that will add clarity to your search.
My priorities are acquiring a career as a heavy equipment technician apprentice, have a career and life balance, have financial stability and bachelor pad, acquire post secondary education in my field and finally have a kickboxing hobby.
i hope the information in this video - about the relationship between brain circuits and rewarding work - reaches every person at every life stage! thank you so so much, dr. tam, for making and sharing this video! super helpful.
In my early 20's, I was struggling to find the right college until I met a lady who helped and suggested to enroll the best college for me and it's 2 hours away from home. I drove there and graduated 6 months later and got a job! 😁
I just took your career personality test. It seemed much too simple, but I took an extra moment to reflect and answer honestly and was incredibly surprised at how well the results summed up ME and provided additional insights. DEFINITELY worth the ~two minutes it took to finish!!! Thank you!
Thanks Warren! Yes, it’s a quick and accurate test that gives a high-level analysis of your career as opposed to a 30-minute 200-question test that’s not focused on your career per se.
Yep. Which is why I'm fking lost. I'm not passionate about anything and at the same time, I don't really like anything too. Am I bound to do something that I hate for the rest of my life?
I’m a 20 year old girl, graduated from college for Business Management with a focus in Entrepreneurship. I have a job that pays 11 an hr but I can’t drive yet. My last years of high school I was extremely depressed because I didn’t know what to do with my life. Everyone pushed me for real estate and I went with it for lack of other ideas, but I attached my depression to it so for me, in my head, real estate became the worst possible career. Now I still have no idea what to do

@@annalucia2663 For people in India, that ($11/hr) is a lot of money, really a lot! If one works for that rate for 20 days (8 hours/day), that person can spend 5 months in India doing nothing. That is seriously a lot of money.
Yep, I published a paper on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory before, which is basically what Dan Pink based his book on. I also really benefited from our conversation about soft skills and made a point in this video (or the next one.... forgot since I batched them) to differentiate between the importance of skills in the context of the company.
@@DrJonTam nice -- keep it up -- I still stand by the thought that Elon may be brilliant, but get away with treating his employees sub-optimally because he is perceived so well for his ability to innovate.
Hello sir I’m currently an undergrad studying Bsc. Management and I actually don’t know what I wanna do but I know for sure I want to indulge in the highly paying career path under my course of study
I don’t what I want to do I don’t have a passion for anything and I don’t have depression. I’m just an introvert and love being at home or in nature or pets. I do want to try martial art though just to see. I’m starting college soon and I just feel so conflicted but I have to see and try it.
Yes, you can be introverted without being depressed or have a "passion" for anything in particular. You're young and got time to try different things out to see what you like and don't like.
Like my Zumba class:-) There is some dopamine there My job is my passion. Now to these young people, they need to identify their transferable skills. I speak a lot about Transferable skills. Good job to bring your DR. to the business
If you’re on the same team, it’s best to help one another. If that’s not the culture of your team, then you may want to find a new team or be the change.
Depends on the industry and the nature of the work. Really volatile times now but I would say focus on a broad hard skill you can really master to close the skills gap. After all, people pay for experts rather than generalists.
I’m 21 graduated class of 2018 and I still don’t know what I want to do, I keep switching majors left and right and I don’t know what to do, I grow extremely frustrated with myself I just don’t know what to do.
@@DrJonTam I’m just very indecisive, I’m very afraid of picking a career that I might hate in a few years I switched from Information Technology to Fire investigating to Networking and now I’m in the same spot as before, I’ve taken multiple career quizzes but it only makes the situation worse.
This was a great video though I still really do not know what I should be. My parents want me to go big and doing something like being a doctor or computer science, but i don't have the work ethics for that and I just don't know what suits me. This video was still awesome tho I have a better idea
I know a lot of doctors of computer science folks who are unhappy. Job hop and try different things if you have to. What's important is you do what's right for you, not your parents.
Absolutely. It's imperative to have clarity on what your career goals are before committing to such a huge investment in your education. There are far cheaper ways to achieve that than going to college and hoping you'll "figure it out."
I’m having this trouble, all the jobs I’ve had haven’t worked out and I get burned out in school. Just trying to enjoy my life and not struggle or hate the job I have.
I am wondering why of all of these career advisors, no one has spoken about the negative aspects of having a career. Doesn´t it mean devoting ones´ self to do the same or similar job for over 20-50 years. It also shows how limited people are and how limited they choose to stay. It is a major cause of stress because there are others competing, in higher positions who are or maybe blocking you and those in lower positions who are trying to get ahead of you, in one way or another. These are the main reasons for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, RIGHT? Why not do a video about this side of, "The Career"?
Agreed. Also: at 59 - the end of career for many - I emigrated, cashed in any security I had … and am basically starting over. It’s frightening. This has created a kind of end of career crisis + crisis of meaning/legitimacy and loss of continuity: “what have I done with my life? What now?” questions. Easy to spiral down. Low dopamine/serotonin!!! The things which seemed interesting and motivating when I was young all seem vacuous and uninspiring… been there, done that. Also suffered life long depression, low self esteem …so a bad situation made worse. Difficult sea to navigate - and no easy answers as to how to make a living the next 20 years! I was a Graphic Designer but who needs an old dog like me? So doing handyman work now. Truth be told most old designers retire or move move on leaving space for younger more creatively agile and tech-skilled people. Point I’m making is there are psychological factors to deal with and it takes courage at every phase of life… and the mental and emotional challenges are a huge factor…
I want to be a 50s housewife.....somehow I'm the head of a department working 60 hours a week in a job. Id make the best housewife.. i love cleaning, and cooking and id do anything to make other people happy.
I'm 35. Just got my degree in biology last year. I kinda wish I had done engineering. I have no career development and no clue what I can do with this degree or what I want to do. Seems like a useless degree unless you go to grad school.
I'm not sure if I don't like my job or if I'm to lazy to do my job but I constantly after every weekend not wanna do my job and think about doing other jobs so you have any advice
I don't know, I see myself as an artistic type but the demand is arguibly low af unless im entirely unique AND really good. Which may take another decade to reach. So my thinking is to just work a trade, but I HATEEEEEE math so that's also a difficult choice
im 17 turning 18 in 5months i have no idea what i want to do in life, my parents are pushing me towards the military i dont want to go however they are sending me to a taster session, i just want to be financially free. time free and location free.....
The US military offers a lot of benefits in terms of skill building and education after the fact. If you’re only 18, is it such a bad idea to try it out and get those benefits and then make the decision when you’re older?
Any advice for career paths for people with autism? I'm 21 and genuinely don't know what I'm doing. And because of this has caused my mental health to drop
I'm not an expert with autism -- but I recently saw this video that may be of help www.cbsnews.com/news/autism-employment-60-minutes-2020-10-04/ lemme know what you think
I’m in my 20s just starting to find a new career in the mean time should I just start trying jobs to train me outside my comfort zone to see if I like it or what?
Best to find that internal clarity first and then find something out there that's a good fit for you. Check out my playlist on career exploration here: ru-vid.com/group/PLgdT6pM-wNolreUzKypNsu3gn1T8_8PFA
looking into being a psych nurse as i love psycholgy...but I absolutely suck at science courses..biology/chemistry/anatomy I HAte them and no matter how hard I try I fail the classes...im giving up on life fr
Exactly he's not reaching out to people in this situation let alone actually helping them find their preferred career/major to lead towards a good pay job he just does what every other video does and gives a philosophical outlook and then say make a list which won't help at all, knowing what you do doesen't make a career or degree choice magically appear because not all of it in fact most of the time NONE of it is career based!
I'd live in a van down by the river but i don't have a van...or a river. Or a good weed guy...so i guess I'll go for a walk to the couch while i still have a couch.
@@DrJonTam no sir. Because a professional detailer requires skill not a college degree. I'm just anxious because I see my self as a failure if I don't go to college.
College is hundreds of thousands of debt for a degree you don’t want or need that you’ll be paying off and reminded about for years to come because someone else thinks they have a say about how you live your life. What do you think you should do?
They need to teach hormones and brain chemicals in school. The science behind this was helpful in seeing what I'm missing. Pep talks don't help, they're temporary.. this will info will help set you up with something logically. Thankyou!
So is playing video games for relaxation bad for your mental health if they are the type to deplete your dopamine with the stimulation? Great video though!
I'm a teenager in 8th grade. I'm so confused what good job doesn't require high marks. Pls help some. 😭😭😭💔. I need to pick subjects for grade 10 next year
Then you want to find roles that fulfill most of them that have room to constantly evolve so you can involve as many of those interests/passions as you can.
@@TheSpider42b There’s plenty of money to be made doing that. For example, James Clear sold 3 million copies of his book Atomic Habits after working on his blog for years. I would recommend the first thing is to get a mentor on the niche you want to develop expertise in and develop a profitable business model, and then grow that podcast/creative writing outlet (e.g. blog) while working a job that gives you stability. Once the side hustle is profitable enough to be your main hustle, you can make the transition. This is a stepping-stone switch.

@@wishlist827 why do you have to go to college? If you must, then you can try going with an undeclared major and take courses to see what you're interested in. In the meantime, I suggest getting real-world experience via apprenticeships, internships, or part-time jobs. Informational interviews with real people who work in fields you're interested in will also help to get a better idea of what they do.
At 18, I suggest you to feel out different jobs to get a sense of what you like. Job hopping around and building some experience will offer a lot more perspective. You may want to check out this playlist of mine “Career Advice for Job Hoppers | Career Advice on Job Hopping”
To add something I forgot: YOU couldnßt even say, "Now I understand better or anything that wasn´t just YOU trying to show how right YOU are to YOUR students and subs.
If you did indeed tell me something new, I will thank you for it as I have done for my other subscribers in the past. However, this was not the case. I can, however, appreciate your contribution to the conversation in the comments.
@@DrJonTam What a perfect example of "Projection", everything I told YOU in my long comment before the one where YOU answered in two sentences and now YOU are copying EXACTLY what I asked of YOU. Where is this the anything new, interesting or intelligent? Just another defense, as I said. YOU need to talk because YOU suffer from the idea that make YOU think YOU are right as long as YOU are talking. STOP. YOU can´t can YOU. Show some control over YOURSELF. Not just defenses, as always. I hope YOUR Subs are seeing this and thinking. Are YOU blind? YOU can´t just STOP, can YOU? STOOOOOP.
Brilliant video Jon. Really well explained and broken down into easy to understand chunks. I've sent you a DM on Instagram Jon. If you have a minute to read it I'd really appreciate it. Best of luck in all your future endeavours.
