Finding my family after 44 years in prison | AJ Shorts

Last year, we met Otis Johnson at a New York City shelter for ex-convicts. Everyone there was trying to get their feet back on the ground. Otis had just got out of prison after serving a 44-year sentence. The last time he had seen his family was May 1975.
When we shared Otis's first story of being reintroduced to the modern world, viewers were amazed by just how unfamiliar everything was to him. iPhones, Times Square, jars of pre-mixed peanut butter and jelly ... everything was new or starkly different.
His story clearly resonated with people. More than 12 million people watched Otis' story on RU-vid, and we wanted to show them what happened next.
We went to Asbury Park, in New Jersey, with Otis to try to find them. Reconnecting with family was something he had said he was always interested in doing, but hadn't got round to yet. After all, he was still learning how to navigate the city. He had a small box where he kept old, tattered photos of family members, but that was basically all the information he had on them.
"The only address I really have is Asbury Park," Otis told us. So we took the train to Asbury Park not knowing much.
But we did have Otis' memory. Once we arrived at the train station and began roaming the streets, small things about his old home slowly came back to him: extended family members, friends, shops. He wanted to find his aunt, Dottie Moore, and some other family members. He said many would probably think he was dead.
When we talked to Otis about his relationship with his family, his answers were complicated. He was a member of the Fruit of Islam (the paramilitary wing of Nation of Islam, the Islamic religious movement once famously led by Malcom X) in his younger days. The Nation of Islam's stated goals were to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans. Otis was a devout Muslim who said he helped "clean up the streets" of drug dealers.
"We wasn't all bad," he would say.
But Otis said some of his family members didn't buy that. He didn't know if they would be angry or happy to see him after all these years away. He had a nervous energy about him as we walked down Pine Street, knocking on doors and asking strangers about Dottie Moore.
This final story on Otis Johnson is one of reconnection and reconciliation. It is the story of a man on a quest to reunite with remnants of his past and one, we hope, many can relate to.

www.gofundme.com/otis-johnsons-home-fund Here's the official GoFundMe page for Otis Johnson. He's lived in a shelter since he got out and the fundraiser is primarily to help him get out into a single room or apartment. He's working with social workers that know the housing market in New York and if enough money is raised he'll finally have a place on his own. Otis was innocent, the case itself reeks of racism and system failure. He never had a chance with an overworked and unenthusiastic public defender. Check out the video on the GoFundMe page and stay tuned for more short film updates. Peace, Kari Bjorn

your information is stored in atoms and molecules and to be conscious you need a continuous exchange of information. energy(as you refer to it) is a neuter and can't store information. to store information you need atleast a binary system. the moment you die and the blood-and oxygensupply of your brain stops, it's cells start to die, and all the information dies with it. also little sidenote: energy is useless without entropy. we don't notice energy, we notice the FLOW of energy.

1975. Assault on a white police officer. No cameras. Otis was black. Racial tensions were high. Poor dude didn't stand a chance. We don't know the whole story but if Otis did what he did today, he has the potential to argue it as a personal defense and possibly get a much lighter sentence (if at all). It's sickening that he got locked up for so long.

Why? A criminal scum bag gets released and tries to find the family that didn't visit him for 40 years. Great story.

No clue, I guess he tried to kill a cop, and they gave him way too much time, he didn't kill anyone.

***** RING ARE YOU LISTENING, IN THE LANE SNOW IS GLISTENING! I don't even know what liberal means. But, he didn't kill anyone. so, 40 years is too much.

You know I was joking, he should have been there for life. Literally. But the death sentance is too much. Life is not.

SlayBells um how about drunk drivers killing people and only getting 8 years in prison explain right now

Have you become insane? People should not get life in prison for murder. That is not how the justice system works. We aren't supposed to be punishing mentally ill people. We should try to work with them, and make them better overall as human beings, so they can be let back into society. Norway works like this and has a recidivism rate of 20%, whilst the US recidivism rate is over 50%.
