All those lovely small bottles would be perfect for storing spices. Its fun to imagine the eclectic storage containers that might be in a mudlarkers kitchen.
I don't think I'd trust bottles from old dumpsites to be food safe.... no matter how good I manage to clean them, there's always something stubborn which I can't quite shift. I do want to make a spice rack though... a really big one, I have too many for the spaces currently allocated them. 🙂
Beautiful bottles, fabulous compact, and such a lovely view from your window! We live surrounded by the Ouachita Mountains in Western Arkansas, and I never get sick of seeing them. I always take time to appreciate the beauty I am blessed to be surrounded by.
I've just looked up the Ouachita Mountains, and they're indeed, very beautiful. I would never get sick of seeing them either. Only time I've been a bit bored by the view from my window, has been the last few days... thick, and long-lasting ground level cloud has hidden it all, leaving nothing but flat white. 🙂
The ink bottles - both the smaller ones and the master ink - WOW! Each time you pick one up, I am immediately transported back in time to a somewhat dim room, lit by kerosene lamp, with a studious person bent over a rustic desk, penning letters to faraway places. Sigh. I love them. Thank you for sharing, Tom.
I think the ink bottles, particularly Boat inks and how they catch and shape the light, are my favourites. I'm glad to hear they give you such vivid visions of the past. 🙂
I think I'll take it......This video that is! Love you exploring new things. Tom, in future, any chance you can share more of your projects or better yet, more of your process of repurposing what you find into crafts or projects! Thank you for all you do!
Yes, I'm working on some craft videos. It's not as easy to film as mudlarking, which is just pointing the camera at stuff and picking it up... so it's taking me far longer to get the hang of than I thought it would. I'm currently working exclusively on editing mudlarking videos, hoping to get 5 videos ahead by the new year... so I can concentrate for a whole month on Crafting, and filming it. 🙂
Enjoyed your video as I always do, I have to admit that I am very envious of mudlarkers that can visit dump sites, maybe one day I will get the opportunity.
Your round up window view always reminds me of one of my favourite films „A woman of substance“ from the early 1980ies. The female role used to run up and down hills like these in front of your window.
I'll add it to the list of films I should watch sometime, and if I get stumble across it one day, I will 🙂. I used to run up and down these very hills here. Alas, a knee injury stopped that.
So many finds, so little space. I'd have taken a lot of them too though! They're in such good condition. Thanks for taking us along Tom. Would also love to see the ducks. X
Thanks farmerkate. Now the site has gone, I regret not going more often and taking a lot more... I haven't found another dumpsite where the glass was in that good condition. I'm glad you enjoyed coming along, and I'll aim to put the little duck video out sometime next week as a Shorts video. 🙂
Would love to see you putting the bottles and such for others to find :) and yes, please show the video of the little ducks! 😊 thanks for such a pleasant meander, be well, tom burleigh! 🍂🍁🍃
Thanks Lmb, I'll probably put the ducks up as a Short, maybe next week (putting things up too quickly in succession moves the algorithm's attention to the new video). 🙂
I wasn't all that disciplined that day, I don't have much room for more bottles, and will have to cull a few from my collection to make room for some of these 🙂. Jars are easier, because I take them for storing things, and I don't have need for more really. Though, I might start taking Jars again, as people are so enthusiastic about them, they'd make good things for giveaways. 🙂
Thanks Angela, I'll try to get back there soon. And I'll try to film next time I'm out putting out bottles, and I'll probably put the ducks up as a Shorts Video sometime next week. 🙂
Yeah, it's a shame that it was so brutally bulldozed and 6ft of topsoil put on top of it. There must be millions of little treasures still under there. Still, I've gotten lots of finds, and 6 videos from there (and the neighbouring field). Hope you're well James, and that we can meet up again sometime soonish. 🙂
Thanks Kathryn, it certainly was a good day, and the light was beautiful. The colours have lasted, the glass from there really is just more vibrant than most. 🙂
Sadly, they've capped most of this site now too. There's still the field next door, heavily dug now by bottle diggers... not really as interesting finds, for me, but it's still fun to go there occasionally and have a pick through what they've left behind. 🙂
There probably are dump sites in your area they are just harder to locate and work. Look to old records at the library or city hall you may be suprised what you find. Besides old dump sites you can also look for old outhouses they are great places to dig. In my teens a few of my buddies and i located one that had goodies from the turn of the century that nobody else had dug. The city we lived in incorperated in 1903 so it may have been their first dump site..I have great memories of that site which i belive is still there untouched from the 60s. Finding one of these sites and being first is quite an amazing feeling knowing that all you dig you are the first to see it in a hundred plus years. Good luck and thanks Tom for another great video.
I love all your finds!! It makes me sad to think that everything is buried and built on now. But you found some lovely glass and brass. I'd love to see the mother duck and her ducklings in a future video! 🦆🦆🦆🦆
Thanks Luana. It's certainly saddening that it's buried... but, there's other places to explore 🙂. I'll probably put the mother duck and ducklings up as a Shorts video sometime next week. 🙂
Love seeing those beautiful bottles all cleaned up with the trapped light coming through them. The deer, I am told from a spiritual friend, is my spirit guide so I was made happy to know you were gifted with one. Perhaps the thing I like best about mudlarkers is their ability to take pleasure, and see beauty, in the simple gifts that the past offers up. Getting without spending. I hope you are well, and thank you.
Thanks Artie. That's one of my favourite things about mud larkers too... that and, almost all of them are truly lovely people. I hope you're well too. 🙂
I love light through colored glass. I have many windowsills with glass objects. I also love finding marbles, so much that I carry a small bag in my purse and toss one out, now and then, to make someone else smile. Nice video. Thank you.
Your explanations and meanderings, and the musical qualities of your voice are what keep me coming back. It’s all so comforting. I think your voice is so good, I swear you could be the next upcoming narrator to bbc nature films, mystery theatre, or some such…
Thanks Kris. I keep hoping that the BBC will get in touch and offer me the chance to narrate a nature documentary. Perhaps I should do a wildlife centred video as an audition piece. 🙂
What great luck to meet the other mudlarker and have her show you the dump! An amazing number of fun and beautiful finds. It was good to see you find so much that you liked.
It's wonderful to see you Tom. Thank you for always taking us along with you. I hope you get to visit that site again before it's gone. Love the compact. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Your quip about the marbles my children when they were younger would find them everywhere and whenever we would see a public disturbance or fight I would say they needed their marbles back! Great adventure today
It's always nice to follow you out and about Tom. I hope you were lucky to spot some groups of goldfinches, those thistles are a magnet for them, and always a joy to discover, twittering away with those lovely colours on show. 👍
Thank you. I'm kind of excited for the possibilities now, I've got to find a few more ruins to leave bottles at (one of my favourites is sadly/happily being refurbished now). 🙂
This bottle hunt was fantastic! You made out like a bandit! I agree with one of the other commentors "how did you pass up all those ceramic jars! " the colors, shapes and designs of the bottles are what I like as well. We don't see many of those jars here in the United States. Thanks for sharing your walks with us.
Thanks for another wonderful video, love it when you find more things than you can carry, but then again I love your video when you find nothing. I missed the sound of the water, but your voice made up for it. Till next time!
Thanks Debbie, I do much prefer spending time at dumpsites next to a stream or river... a bit of a wade is always good for the psyche. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
Thank you Tom, I needed this calming walk and great finds too, yes i would love to see the ducks in your garden and any others of wildlife too. Take care and thank you for sharing 👍👏❤️
Yes please share your videos of leaving bottles in abandoned buildings, and the duck and her ducklings. Nice finds and the shell was a surprise. I love your calming channel. Take care and be well!
Thanks A Layne. I haven't decided how to do the leaving bottles video yet... reckon I should do two? One leaving them, and leaving some clues... and a follow up to see how many have gone a few weeks later? 🙂
A great video, I love all the beautiful coloured bottles, grieves me to think of all the treasures lost to that development, glad you were able to save some.
Thanks Catherine. The bottles from that site really are beautiful colours, and yes... it's quite saddening that most of the site is covered now. I wonder if any of the people who move into the development there will ever find the mud larking and bottle digging videos that have been made there, realise what they're sitting on top of and have a bit of a dig in the garden. 🙂
The compact was a wonderful find. It seems to have cleaned up pretty well too. Art college! I went to an arts college, but was in the performing arts department. Happy times sharing a space with so many creative minds whether they were artists, musicians, photographers or theatre folks. We stuck together like one big family. You’d have been in my gang Tom 😊 Maybe when you feel more confident with your art again you could do a Timelapse video of you working on a piece or something?
I did hang out with a lot of the performing arts department; they were better company than most. And yes, I was so happy sharing spaces with creative people, all working on their own projects... it made me incredibly productive in my own creativity. It's only recently, that I've managed to get back to near that productivity again, when I'm on my own. I think there may be some timelapse videos eventually, but Craft videos first. 🙂
Good day! Thanks for another enjoyable trip to the dump, hehe. I love the clarity of the glass and the vibrant colors, I'd love to fill all my windows with a glass and plants! Looking forward to the next one.
What a glorious lark this was! I loved the jars, the bottles and yes, I was saying take them all at that point..hahaha!! I also hadn't considered that maybe the reason one loves finding marbles is that one had lost theirs? Absolutely enjoyed Tom, thanks! 🥰
Today I saw the film Emily ,made 2022 Directed by Frances I Conner .it reminded me so much of your walks ,as it's almost def set locally .it brought to mind how unchanged some parts are and how mudlarking is like delving into our past . Beautiful area and so reminded me of your walks .I bet If Emily were alive today she would definitely watch your vlogs .
I enjoyed this journey through the thistle covered field, it looked like there were bottles galore, with beautiful tones of their original colour. I am one follower that's calling out which piece to show to the camera and of course for my eye sight, right up super close to the camera. take good care
Hello Mr Tom Burleigh, this has been a marvelous experience in larking. Love the many bottles, and unusual items that you have found. It's a good thing I am not going to this dump. I wouldn't be able to carry everything I like. Its all lovely. Thank you for taking me along. Very relaxing time. Greetings from the U.S.A.
Thanks Peggy. It was marvellous getting to lark on that field several times before it was bulldozed...I'm glad you thought that coming along vicariously through video was a marvellous experience too. It was a good day, with good company and good finds. 🙂
Another great location! And so many finds unearthed! The glass is gorgeous! Love the colors. I see a fair maiden, long hair streaming in the sun, skipping across the heather...ok thistles. At once without a yip, she falls into a larker's hole...lol! I would be fearful of snakes. I guess it's not much of a concern there, which is great! Another great adventure! Thanks Tom!
Thanks Spicencens. I feel for that poor fair maiden; those bottle digger holes come out of nowhere, and some are dangerously deep. Even a shallow one can turn an unwary ankle. Alas, no snakes though. The only ones I'd be likely to see in the places I go to are Grass snakes... they can be a bit stinky as a deterrent, but that's the biggest risk of finding one. 🙂
Thanks Susan. There are an increasing number of posts in Mudlarking World FB group of people mudlarking in New Zealand mud larking, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are some possible spots in Tasmania too. I hope you can find somewhere and give it a try, it's a good hobby. 🙂
Yes, Adam's a great guy. I'm glad he has the shed; his round ups have improved by having that space. You're wonderfully kind, supporting so many channels. 🙂
Oh how I wish there were places like this near me in The States. This was heavenly to me! All those beautiful bottles and jam jars 😍. I would need about a dozen bags to take everything I liked there!
Always such a pleasure to accompany you on your treasure hunts. I was surprised that you kept so many of the large bottles. These bottles did clean up nice. 🌻🐕🇺🇸
Thanks Guadalupe. I was a bit surprised at how many big bottles I brought home too 🙂. They are very nice bottles though, and I have a friend who runs a shop in town, who'll like the one's I don't want to keep, to put LED strings in, as subtle lighting around the shop. 🙂
Lovely video Tom, what an amazing dump, alas to be no more like many others lately, all in the name of "progress" . Aww the plain bottles are my favourites. They're exactly the kind of bottles I use for my potion bottle store. I always take the stuff others just leave behind, like a human Womble lol!
Yes, it was a really great dump site for a while. I think our mutual friend James got there before the bulldozers too and has been several times to the newly dug (but not as good part) in the neighbouring field since. Are there any of the bottles I've found that you'd particularly like as a gift? I could give them to James to pass on next time I see him.
Oh I miss that field! I found some amazing things there including my best claw pipes. Thank you for filming it, it's good to look back and remember the happy days there with awesome friends and awesome finds 😃💗 x
It was an amazing field, I was fairly late to the party, but got some really nice finds there (with some awesome friends) 🙂. Some from the neighbouring field too, but the things were never as interesting there.
THE FIRST FOOT BALL WAS FROM AUSTRALIA I THINK, THE PANTHER LOGO WAS THE PENRITH PANTHERS AND THE TITANS IS LOGO FROM THE GOLD COAST, MUST HAVE BEEN A BIG KICK FROM AUSTRALIA
Quite possibly an Ausie football, I didn't really notice the slight difference in shape it would be. Wouldn't be surprised though if some British firm had just co-opted Australian Logos to improve sales. A lot of British people do love Australia. Me too. 🙂
I recognised a few of those logos to St George Dragons, Penrith Panthers, Gold Coast Titans. Definitely Australian rugby league teams. Us Aussies love the footy 😍

Thanks Juney Shu, I'll probably put the short video of the ducks out sometime in the next week. Sadly we didn't get much warning of the bulldozers... nothing for years, and then turn up one day and it's all gone. A lot of mudlarkers and bottle diggers did manage to save a lot, and us youtubing mudlarkers also got films out of the place. 🙂
Nice to see you again, Tom. Your beautiful summer early evening nicely juxtaposes with my late autumn snowy one. 😂 Also, you are the last person I would describe as having lost your marbles. 🤣🤣 I would very much enjoy seeing whatever you filmed of the mother duck with her babies. 🥰 I'm glad you found so many lovely bottles, stoppers, and other little treasures before the builders moved into the site. I haven't yet seen Bottledigger Tom's latest release, but it's on the list. 😁 If you want to record yourself caching bottles here & there around the countryside, I will certainly watch the result. It does strike me as major logistical problem to do so, however. Your choice. 🤔😜 See you next time. 😊💛👍
We've had a good Autumnal mist here today; the historic Graveyards looking at their best in it. 🙂 I don't think it'll be too hard to film caching some bottles... though one of my favourite ruined farmhouses is now being re-built, so I've got to find some more ruins if I want to make a decent video out of it. 🙂 I'll probably put the ducks footage up as a shorts video sometime in the next week. Warm regards, Tom.
Opened my tablet this morning and wala there's your vlog. Sure missed them. What a treasure trobe. I kept thinking, hope you don't stumble into any of those deep holes. I can't wait until you post some crafting videos especially I want to see what you make from that bagpiper. 🤔
I would of picked up a few jam jars and teapot lids they are so good together, you are disciplined. And that’s the first time I saw a toilet in a dump. Good video and didn’t mind the wind.
Thanks Julie. I'll probably pick up some jam jars again when I see good condition ones, they're so popular I can do a giveaway sometime with them as one of the items. 🙂
Thanks Jeanie. Still don't find much of the really old stuff, like the mudlarkers on the Thames, but I am fortunate to have lots of nice sites around me to visit. 🙂
I know I'm many months behind but I can't help to think about all the history lost when a dump or tip is bulldozed over .My own home sight and the area around was a large dump along the river here in Battle Creek MI I do find the odd bit of history from the 30s or 40s now and then .
Fun location besides the thistles I suppose. It be fun to see you put some treasures out and then see if they’re gone. A hide and seek so to speak. Lots of good jars and bottles at this site. It would be hard to leave behind! I hope to see you do some crafting one day too. Your video was my relaxing part of my day. The compact with the poppies on was a nice find being Remembrance Day has just passed. Sad to hear that bulldozers have come in and glad to hear the diggers are doing what they can to get as much out of there. Enjoyed the video today.
I didn't mind the thistles too much; they hardly scratched me at all through my jeans and boots. 🙂 Almost every bottle I've put out has been taken... I'm not sure yet how best to do a video about it. I could film putting them out, and then going around to see how many have gone in the same video... or put out two videos, and maybe give some clues in the 1st as to where they are. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
I'm sorry I missed the premier (if you did one). I want to see that monster when it's in any stage of completion. I love your unusual ideas. Looking at those pens, I find my Sharpie collection sorely lacking. I've checked for new colors, but have not found them. I did buy a 72 pen watercolor marker set, but that's a challenge for later - when I not feeling the crunch of knitting sweaters for great nieces and nephews (and when this nasty cold finally goes away).
I didn't do a premier for this one, just quietly uploaded it. I think watercolour markers are a challenge for me to attempt sometime soon too... I've had a brief play with them, but not really tried to use them on anything more precious than a doodle yet. I hope your cold fades very soon.
25:31 you proclaim the bag is not meant to carry this much heavy. I don't know why but I laughed myself stupid thinking of my 👖 screaming that they weren't meant to carry this much heavy 😂🤣😂. I would have definitely broke my neck in all those holes. Walking past so much would have me not paying attention and down the proverbial rabbit hole I'd go. I've been known to have to drag myself broken and battered up from just the sidewalk. Weather here is below freezing now so only short jaunts to walk Baer and back inside to watch my favorite larks so thank you for your upload Tom. And blessings as always.
I do like that you laughed at that. I've not been making as many jokes in my videos, and I don't know why... it just hasn't happened much recently. It was certainly a warren of digger holes, that could easily be stumbled into there, I slipped into two by the edges crumbling beneath me, but thankfully kept my feet. I hope you keep safe in the icy conditions, and as always, blessings to you too Jeriann 🙂
Would have been a project on it's own, trimming down the broken bits, and figuring out what to do with it from then on. Alas, I have too many such projects languishing un-attempted in boxes. I must be restrained sometimes.
A wonderful lark Tom, the bottles are worth the arm ache of carrying them home. It’s a shame that yet again another dump as fell to the advance of developers. Stay safe Mark and Julie Romney Marsh
Thanks Mark and Julie. It is indeed a shame that it's gone... I put off going for so long, and only filmed there a few times before it was fenced off and bulldozed. Should teach me to not put things off. 🙂
