As the proud owner of an 8-time international champion Andalusian stallion performance horse, I have some experience with the breed. Despite their impressive appearance, Andalusians mature very late. They're not even supposed to be started under saddle until 3 years of age. Not saying you've done this, but if they are trained too intensively when younger (under 5 years old), they will develop problems. Unfortunately, because of their willing nature, they try to please, even if the work is too intensive. And the other commenter is correct. Historically, Andalusians were not bred to be tall and heavy, that's a recent and unwise trend designed to appeal to the dressage market.

Emporio is only 7 now and work very hard in dressage. I think in spain, it was too early to train him

That is true...from reading equine literature from the 1600s and 1700s it sounds like these horses were typically about 14.2-15hh. Probably an ideal size when overall soundness and longevity is concerned. And point well taken on asking too much when their bones and joints are still developing...just because they are capable of performing certain movements, or are willing to perform them, does not mean they should.

Thank you for posting this info. I always thought he looked a little top-heavy/big, but I've never owned a horse and have never ridden a stallion, so I wasn't sure what it was, but something looked 'off' to me. So I love knowing the history of the breed and especially their specific body development and needs while training. Very interesting to me! Not sure what happened with Matt's stallion in the past, but as human beings, we have a tendency to think that faster is better and bigger is stronger, which is, of course, not always true. But he couldn't be in better hands than Matt's! He will exercise him correctly and take care of him according to plan; he's a fantastic, caring owner!♡

I saw a training post with Matt where they were using pressure in the stirrups to regulate a more collected elevated trot. The way the saddle is designed..that pressure along the back from this riding technique could certainly cause pain along the horses mid to lower back, affecting both the hind & front end. You are so right that these horses have a natural movement that is so impressive, & a temperament that gives & gives until it can't give anymore. Its wonderful he is seeking help & hopefully learning that slow & steady training is best🦄

tbh starting any horse at 3 is very early considering how their boney develope until 6 years of age, but many people are impatient because the horse's cost a lot of money and they want to get that back through competing or riding time. It's even worse in the racing industry where they start them at 2.
@AtkaNova

I didn't even start riding my horse until he was 4 and he didn't get to level 3 dressage until his low teens. We're all guilty of rushing, especially in dressage these days, 20 years ago Olympic horses in dressage were often mid to late teens, now there like 5-8 yrs, it's to early

I agree that horses are started too young and worked too hard at a young age now. It is sad because many of them are used up by the time they hit 10 years old. That's not how it should be. and it is in just about every horse discipline out there.

Great point! I grew up with my family breeding Warmbloods, and we wouldn't touch them until about 5, some even as late as 6. Sometimes maybe 4 years old, but a very light start usually just to have them backed for sales prospects. But yeah, my family wanted to ensure that the horse has time to fully grow and fill out. Of course we would still do handling and ground work, some long line. But starting in riding was left as long as possible. Warmbloods also mature slow.

This is always a good thing to remember people that horses are resilient as hell. They can go for basically anything without showing pain. The moment your horse is trying to compensate or is showing pain, often means that the problem as been lying here for quite sometime and that they cannot manage it anymore. This is once again a proof that's every riders should listen to their horses a little bit more. You did amazing by reacting this fast !

Sometimes, we forget how fragile a horse can be. To slow down the work and let the body adjust to changes in movement. Horses are not built for sideways movement and the demands of dressage can truly take its toll-free! So beautiful to watch a horse perform all the requirements! I'm glad you got your boy to a good vet and are now aware of what can happen. You will succeed, and you can keep him healthy! Great video!

Matt, I just wanted to share something for you to think about. When it’s icy outside I walk a circle inside my house and found that after walking the same direction the muscles in my hip area got sore and that when I switched directions it seemed to alleviate the discomfort. Two legged versus Four legged is different, but thought you might want to switch directions after so many laps around the ring to balance the stress equally on both sides of his body while you build up his muscles again. This may sound silly to some but I felt if it can help Emporio, it was worth mentioning.

That was incredibly interesting! I’ve had multiple spine surgeries (12) and then I developed SI joint issues the same as your horse. They were going to fuse my SI joints but I developed a spinal infection so they gave me steroid injections instead. I couldn’t walk for a month but it did get better and no additional surgeries. It fabulous that your vet recognizes how detrimental steroids are to the body. It seems your horse had more advanced medical treatment than I did! I love your channel! ❤️

Is it because of the training PRE horses get ? I think of the short moovements. Also PRE's may need less warm up than other horses. Is it his first winter in Holland ? Just thinking of possibilities. #peggyfromtexas Matt, a little history about me....as I love hearing about you and a part of your life and Jesse's too! My son and I raised Quarter horses in Cypress TX. our experience was always having fun ...riding for pleasure, my son rode in games with his gelding, which was a blast!! We spent hours in our beautiful barn where we...spent grooming and bathing our horses and talking about world problems😂🤣 MY mare, PRISSY and I would just lay out in the sunshine in the wild flowers together enjoying the beautiful day!! I would ride bareback around our pond, day dreaming...lazy days of love ....and lots of work too, as we had a total of 5 horses. It was a wonderful time in my life, and for my son too! My husband died, we sold all our horses, and our home, time to move on in my life. I am married to a wonderful man, 35 years now. Wow! 😊 We live in Huntsville Tx in the beautiful hills now, beautiful sunsets and view of the lake....retired!🤗

His diagnosis is basically the same as I was given for my dog a couple years back. Some minor inflammation that ends up causing problems as the animals tries to avoid making the pain worse. For my dog that meant she didn't want to poo since the way her spine bends was likely causing more pain. As a result, I ended up taking her to the ER vet and waiting way too long only to be told she was bloated because she was full of poop and that she didn't have bloat. I don't regret it since bloat kills dogs quickly, but it was kind of annoying to wait so long. Currently her inflammation only really flares up once a year at the end of summer and it can be controlled with large CBD oil doses during flare ups and then some OTC dog pain meds when it is at its worst. I can also get her a shot of steroids when it flares up to help it go away faster, but this last time I went with OTC pain meds + cbd oil since I moved and didn't have the old vet's work up. So I would have had to pay for extra tests before the vets would give her the meds. The rest of the year she is fine though

I find that many American veterinarians are rather behind on research and knowledge when it comes to metabolic disorders and laminitis/founder in general, as are many horse owners, too. The UK is so far advanced in treatment and management strategies. However, many American veterinarians do use the same therapies that this vet used, its just a matter as to the owners having the money to pay for some of these more advanced treatments, and to notice the symptoms to get a vet out early in the first place, the vet can't begin treating early if they don't receive an appointment request until 6 months past when the owner first noticed it happening, or perhaps just didn't even pay enough attention to their horse on an ongoing basis to know when something is wrong. I don't know how common this is in other countries, but I know for many vets in the US they work at a "large animal" clinic, so they see horses, sheep, cows, pigs, other farm animals, and their knowledge base is spread over multiple species, they have to take in new knowledge about all the species they see, not just horses. This can be totally fine for basic vet care such as vaccines, basic dentals, stitching a wound or cleaning up a wound, emergency colic that doesn't require surgery, etc.. But if you have something more complex, such as lameness, neurological symptoms, nutritional concerns, advanced diagnostics, reproductive health, more complex dentals, etc., you should be looking for an equine vet clinic specifically, and one that has a good combination of younger vets that are not too long out of school and have the most up to date knowledge and research fresh in their minds, and older experienced vets that have been in the profession long enough to have lots of first hand knowledge that is sometimes more relevant or practical than book smarts alone, a clinic in which the vets will consult with their colleagues on a matter and get more viewpoints for the best treatment plan, vets that have a genuine drive to continue taking in knowledge and a humble attitude to keep learning, not just to do the very basics to keep their license valid, and vets that are willing to refer to another clinic or specialist for the best care instead of being concerned with their pride and wanting to know-it-all.

I'm glad you got the help early and pressed for answers. You are better prepared if this happens again. Did the vet mention his weight as a concern? In our case it can be and as you are aware, muscle is heavy. You need rubber trim and possibly flap to protect metal lock that is exposed. Condensation and exposure to cold literally freeze in place. Hope you get worked out. Btw, we found eco friendly pet safe ice melt made from beets. Yet it's green. No staining and one application lasted four days. No chloride..amazon.

I have never seen anything like that, and I’ve worked with horses my whole life. I would begin to ask myself what am I doing to the horse that has caused this? Sometimes it could just be a simple thing that I am overworking them, overworking the horse with repetitious exercises.

I do appreciate your responsibility and caring, Matt...the fact that you want the best for your horses and animals in general. A lot of owners wait for such a long time believing it will get better (miraculously). A vet doctor seems to be very erudite and kind, he is also very well-articulated. Emporio´s hind legs are a lot better for sure. Btw, I saw you in a movie Whitestar yesterday on TV in Slovakia!! What a surprise! But you could at least kiss each other at the end of the movie. :D And Mattia, it´s winter! What shoes are you wearing? Protect yourself, please 🙏 :)

I have sacro-iliac instability and degeneration which for me causes severe sciatic nerve pinching and intense pain. It's interesting because in humans that joint is tiny and only moves a matter of millimeters. So the slightest wrong step can be extremely debilitating. I have an underlying congenital connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which is what caused my countless joint problems. The one joint out of the dozens that cause me pain and other issues, the sacroiliac joint is the most painful by far. I was actually surprised that this was his diagnosis but once the vet said that's what it was, the way he was standing made perfect sense. It's unfortunate that horses don't have the ability to really stay off their feet and keep pressure or movement away from areas of significant pain like this. I can say they have used corticosteroid shots directly into my facet joints and have done nerve ablations on many areas of my spine, mostly my neck and the sacroiliac areas. Obviously since I said they've tried so many, clearly that means they don't help, at least in my case due to my underlying disease process, they wouldn't have helped for long if they ever did. And they never did. I feel his pain in his back and hip area. Just looking at him standing like that makes me cringe now knowing what it is. Of you notice the bump where the back meets the rump area, that lump in the spine thar makes the back slope downwards, the joint they're discussing is just under that area. The joint is in each side where the spine and leg come together basically. So Emporio's stance makes sense. Thankfully Matt is the one who has Emporio and he takes extremely good care of his animals and loves them very deeply. It's so good to know thus was noticed and treated early before thus became a major problem for the front legs and neck. It'll be so nice to see him coming back into shape again. He's so stunning and he and Matt make such a beautiful pair together! He's got one hell of a dad! I'm so glad it wasn't more serious!

I'm sorry but I missed the etiology (or cause) of the broad stance. I understand the signs, inflammation of particular joints and symptoms, apparent discomfort. Just as an example maybe a strain that caused a muscular imbalance which led to inflammation? He is a beauty, good job getting it figured out. Great video

How can you have a lawsuit for planting trees on your own property? That does not sound right. I am so sorry to hear about Emporio but glad you got him the very best help. Hosting your family for Christmas I think adds a lot of stress. I hope they will help you, to take some of the pressure off. Was Emporio turned out with other horses? Has he been used for breeding? He seems so young to have arthritis? Is this common for his breed? Really good that he is eating well and has a good appetite. Glad he is cheeky and feeling otherwise good. He looked really happy to be home. Thank you, Doctor, for being so kind and Matt to share and explain Emporio's diagnosis with us. The doctor did a wonderful job explaining the problem and treatment. He does look improved at the end of the video. I can see the stress this has put on poor Matt, but I know how difficult it is when one's horse is sick. It does sound like he has a good treatment plan. I would have liked to ask the doctor if this is a degenerative condition or not? Or is it something that with the proper healing and care he will be back to normal with no problem? Maybe only time will tell, he may not be able to answer that question now? Matt you are a great horse owner and always give your horse's the very best. I will be thinking about Emporio and praying he will be healing and feeling better very soon. Please have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your family and the holiday! I hope you get a little time to relax and chill from all this stress.
