What does one do when it seems as though their entire identity is hinged on their skin color, and their insecurities have been turned into a lucrative industry? It feels impossible to love yourself when societal beauty standards have, for generations, forced upon women that they're unworthy. Amidst a heart-wrenching tale of her own life, Waseka Nahar shares the key to re-discovering our identities, restoring our sense of self-worth, and most importantly, being unapologetically brown. Waseka Nahar is a 25-year-old Illustrator who pushes the boundaries of imagination and through her art, brings out important social issues. Waseka's past led her to work on issues such as women’s rights, mental health and her very recent and well-received collaboration project with Zainab Anwar - Dark and Lovely, focusing on the South Asian taboo relating to dark skinned women. Through her talk, Waseka hopes to explore the definition of beauty in South Asia and challenge the impossible beauty standards that exist.
