Finding The Right Keyboard On A Budget.. (With Great Worship Pad Sounds)

It took me over a decade to find the right keyboard that had the balance of price, great worship sounds and ease of use. The Yamaha MODX keyboard has worked out great, it has killer worship pads, great pianos, a ton of synth sounds and has a modest price for the average person.

I've had the same problems with using software instruments for a worship service. I once played for a Christmas service, my Mac was unplugged without me knowing it. I came up to play and there was no sound from the computer. But fortunately I had my custom samples on my Yamaha EX5 and was able to play.

I have been so back and forth on to midi controller or not to midi controller. 😀 You made a good point about laptop going out in the sun. I never thought about that. I was tempted to get a Modx 7 but struggle with whether I like the key bed or not for piano at that price point. I could not find a midi controller with the keybed and features I wanted in the price range I wanted. The novation launchkey mk3 gave me a lot of what I wanted but the key bed travel was not enough. I ended up going back to a Casio keyboard to gig with as a midi controller also. I got the Casio ct s1000v. It has its flaws also but the key bed was better than the other midi controllers I tried. I layer sounds of the keyboard with my iPad plus it has speakers. I said I may try a control surface at some point later for more control if needed but kinda glad I went back to portable keyboards. I play more than worship style so having the extra sounds is a plus. Having to add so many pieces can also be counterintuitive 😀 but it does allow me to experiment a little more gear wise without having to put out a lot of money at one time.

For a very low budget and simplicity (no touch screen) modern Casio 76 key units are very affordable and can get you the piano and pad and strings thing covered. A hybrid approach with both the macbook and audio interface (when the regular music team is doing its thing) and easy fallback to onboard sounds is also an effective approach. Yamaha also sells a stage EP and stage organ unit that covers this market segment very well. Physical drawbars in traditional drawbar form factor are very important for worship performers who need realtime control over their organs, but this MODX is a monster machine that anyone will find more than capable of anything you could want to do, and I’ve seen MODX keyboard sliders used effectively as drawbars.

Contrary to your claim ....I've played big brand keyboards that have crashed during the middle of my live performance...these days,Im using a simple pc laptop with a 1tb ssd using ableton Live 10 as my Keys rig with a 88 keys midi lightweight controller keyboard (As am more a pianist) & they havent crashed once on me.....very reliable, efficient & way more affordable than buying a pricey 88 keys MoDX.......I guess the bottomline is...to each is own.

Keyboards can crash and laptops can crash. Accepted as a known fact. Your anecdotal experience doesn't disprove others' anecdotal experience.

@@matthewgaines10 ...What am I disproving? I said to each his own...IOW.....Some prefer laptops softsynths & some prefer hardware keyboard where some which cannot afford the Modx route use a cheaper option which is the softsynth preference...not quite sure where your reply is going .

@@simbaking6338you said, "contrary to your claim". The use of 'contrary' indicates that you're trying to disprove their experience.

We need to stop this obsession with following the trends set by popular churches. Nord keyboards are not an essential tool for worship and are just the preference of some. The acoustic piano sound is the worst possible one for use in a band that has a guitarist as both sounds are produced by striking strings. DX or rhodes pianos are more distinct and less likely to clash with the guitars. During prayer or quiet times, a mellow electric piano is much more effective at setting a mood than an acoustic because it is a cleaner sound and less obtrusive in my experience. Any professional keyboard played by a competent minstrel is better than an expensive red one in the hands of one who does not understand the ministry.

Thanks for the tip. However when I mix Piano/Pad/Strings, I notice some sound cut outs as if there is a polyphony issues. Have you had similar experience?

For that need sound videos take a look at this playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qX6n1vPY1iw.html&pp=iAQB The MODX is a great keyboard, just a tad bit pricey where I am. I still don't know if the CK is the replacement to the MX, but hoping it's not, I'd like something like the MX with all the sounds from the MODX/CP/YC series, but to be honest, MODX+ is where my heart is.
