Deer dream studio has always been very nice to RU-vidrs playing the game. But I do want to say thank you for answering my question a few weeks ago.

I haven’t seen everything yet but is the mc human is he the devil can he die or what I don’t think he ages but still can lose to mortals like Karin

nah it's probably just a coincidence since nightmare mode is just a big reference-fest (the dog is a reference to mycorrhiza, the beginning in the bathroom with the pixelated face is a reference to IMSCARED, the faces in the door I assume are a reference to Junji Ito since it looks like something he would draw)

thats what i immediately thought since everyone but Cabbage has either outwardly (Raspberry and Potato, even though Potato may not actually be a victim like the other Chompettes) or taken slight jabs (Onion and Bread) at the MC in varying levels of anger, and every time they do Cabbage quickly silences them and they either get quiet or they just laugh it off before the dialogue continues or the Chompettes disperse. it seems like in the Cornbread ending, CB/Razael is much more kinder and soft-spoken compared to the other Chompettes, even saying hes proud of you for how far youve come. the moment i saw how CB seems to be acting differently to the other Chompettes, i immediately thought the reason why he was able to move on is because CB didnt hold a grudge against the MC and maybe even in life was very compassionate and forgiving towards the MC

@@Mariewolf_94 this makes it more interesting imo because these were human beings and generally speaking, humans don't like being told to get over the horrifying and traumatic events in their lives so they double down on their right to feel the way they do... cabbage might actually be holding them back by doing this but then my question becomes wtf is cabbage's deal? Is cabbage the "I want to forgive but I still feel angry" and what we're seeing is a spectrum. If its a spectrum then potato might be the opposite end? Because he doesn't like what happened to him but he seems to also have a murderous cannibalistic streak so is he angry about being bested? Is it literally just his pride?

@@ArtyMcKenzie I think cabbage is faking it entirely. Yes he wants the others to move on, that's why he's nice, but you can tell he doesn't like you. Everything he is doing is to help the spirits, never to help himself bc he can't get over the fact that he was eaten. Cabbage tells the others to tell the MC to not let anatoly leave, or gregor to be saved, not bc cabbage wants to help the MC get better or cares about the MC in any way, but bc cabbage doesn't want more spirits to be trapped. Cabbage can't move on bc he hasn't forgiven the MC but he does have compassion towards literally every other character in the game. This also explains why he helps the MC in the fight against Karin. Cabbage doesn't want Karin to become the very thing cabbage hates, the MC. Now we know it's too late but cabbage is very determined, it's been how many years and the chompettes are still "nice" to the MC

yes!! i love that especially bc potato hints at remembering how to read but now he cant read. but also i think anatoly knew he would be eaten after his death so he didn’t hold a grudge. mariah also promised to help the group and keep them alive so she wasn’t vengeful either bc she knew her being eaten was for the greater good. i’m not quite sure about greggor and karin tho…

I think it’s related to how prolonged starvation can lead to hallucinations. The guilt of surviving by eating humans would/should wear a toll on people. MC was human at some point since the game states that they lose some of their humanity when consuming MEAT. The tone of dialogue for Mariah and Anatoly leaving the cabin to gather food heavily suggest that they know they’re going to be eaten and came to terms with that outcome even though it was forced upon Anatoly. There could also be something to say about MC’s lack of self-care being related to depression though that could also be stemming from the need to conserve energy. Hallucinations, guilt and self-hatred manifesting in the form of the chompettes haunting them.... There’s a bunch to think about in this story,it quite interesting.

I think it's implied that the dead trio interacted with some of the other victims' spirits and learned more about the actual situation. From their perspective, at first, they come upon a little cabin where a nice stranger shelters and feeds them. The storm is unfortunate but incontrollable. The cannibalism is tragic but necessary. Now, you learn of the cabin owner's seemingly supernatural powers and a history of cannibalism. Everything suddenly comes into sharp relief as you realize it was all intentional. The owner wasn't just another victim, they were the perpetrator. What was the fucking point of your sacrifice. Mariah especially, recognizes that the protagonist was the reason her friends were "corrupted" with this hunger for human flesh

I honestly assumed that she got mad over the fact that most of her went bad. She sacrificed a week worth of food for them and 5 days of it goes bad, yeah I'd be mad too

Yes and to top that off, it mentions OP has iron teeth during one of the dreams

to add up to baba yaga, what I noticed 1. Baba Yaga has a bone leg - we find a bone of a leg under the wood plank in the bedroom 2. Baba Yaga has a cabin ON chicken legs - the leg under the plank turns out to be of a chicken 3. Baba Yaga do eat children a lot, the second nightmare is a literal retelling of the ending of one of tales. Baba Yaga tries to eat the boy (or a boy and a girl, depending on the version), but he tricks her to showing how should he fit in a shovel to be put into the oven, Yaga shows him with herself as an example aaaand he burns her to death. Pretty brutal. Other thoughts: iron teeth are a really rare depiction of a Baba Yaga... Saying this as a slav, first things that come to mind are named bone leg, chicken-feet cabin, also mortar in which she flies (I guess mc has a mortar as well but the one Yaga has is bigger, not for berries or something... eh, I guess we could count that as well). So, what I feel is... it's just a bit frustrating that creators use not-common references to Baba Yaga (and I'm pretty sure it's her exactly) like iron teeth and this phrase in a plain sight while the most common references like bone leg are really vague. I mean, bone leg being a chicken bone is pretty clever, but I feel like we could've had that as reference more clear rather than iron teeth, that way it would immediately set my mind to thinking about Baba Yaga and look up different depictions of it and then find out for example that she had iron teeth sometime and hey that was referenced and then find this story about the question and then it all would feel like finding more details to it... And the way it is in the game it just feels like "well someone will remember that phrase from a fairytale and then they will immediately think of Baba Yaga". This phrase is like from a really non-popular folk-tale and does NOT sound like that at all in Russian/Ukrainian. Although nightmares obviously retelling fairytales does set your mind in the right direction.

Just got to this point and just…it’s such a perfect moment 😂

For real. On the other hand, it’s honestly true. Sometimes someone else is in control of what you eat. Your parents for instance might make a meal for the family and forget you don’t eat meat, or intentionally make a dish with meat, and you have the choice to eat it or go hungry. Also, in a foreign country where food might be limited and your guide has taken you to a place where meat is the only thing on the menu just served with different spices or herbs… you just have to eat it. A birthday party, bbq, wedding reception, etc might not have food available to meet your diet either (sometimes because they just don’t know) and you don’t want to be rude. But when you’re in charge of your own diet and can cook for yourself, go to restaurants that have the foods you can eat, etc you eat a vegetarian or vegan diet. It doesn’t mean you’re not a vegetarian or vegan because you occasionally have to make choices to eat things you wouldn’t otherwise eat. On the other hand, if your diet is primarily vegetarian and you occasionally make an intentional choice to eat meat when you have the option to eat something else you are actually a flexitarian and not vegetarian. This is like if you have a taco night at home once a week for dinner but all the rest of your meals are meat free.

I agree!! This is I think supported by the fact that other victims state that they have been murdered, but for example, Mariah only says when you are coming down the basement “you desecrated my corps” so you destroyed her corpse, she was already dead, she isn’t blaming you for her death, she is blaming you for not letting her Rest In Peace. Literally lol, you couldn’t let her rest in one piece.

And i think that's why none of the three ended up as chompettes, while karin did. You (being baba yaga/possessed by baba yaga) killed all the chompettes with your own hands, as u did with karin, so now they are trapped as food while the others (even tho karin killed Gregor, she wasn't the house owner, so it didnt count) are just vengeful for you eating them

that’s definitely an interesting theory. throughout the game i thought potato was a representation of us- like a consciousness of some sort or our inner monologue but that makes sense. it could be our old mentor speaking to us and what they would do. (i say our like we’re the cannibalistic killer😂)

That's what I figured, too. Maybe the player character had come to the cabin with the people who would become the Chompettes, since they seem so familiar with each other. Then they got The Hunger like Karin, and overpowered the killer who would become Potato, after the two killed everyone else. Maybe Potato was the one who killed a kid and hid the body in the potatoes.

I think one of them mention that she straight up killing the whole family instead of one by one like in current story in the past. I can't remember who say it, but I know someone did.

Was thinking the same thing, potato may of been the butcher mentioned in the newsclipping.

My theory is that Anatoly knew he wouldn't be able to keep feeding it and/or feared that someone would eat it, so he freed it in hopes that it would survive in nature

I was thinking Potato maybe was The Butcher of Zapakote. I remember during the game a mention of the player nursing a/the butcher back to health, so maybe the butcher showed up at the cabin, and, as repayment for saving their life, the butcher instructed the player in their ways, only for the player to later turn on the butcher?

My therorie: The Butcher had to leave Zapakote for whatever reasons, maybe the police was about to catch him, he ran into the woods gravely wounded. Then he was nursed back to health (maybe because the PC still had enough good food in the basement or he would've rotten away much sooner) just to be devoured at a later time.

I think the chompettes are embodiments of the people in the cabin. Cabbage being Karin, onion being Anatoly, bread being Gregor, raspberry being Mariah, and Potato being the player

@@liamnade9099 doubt it, the devs literally said to not take nightmare mode seriously. I think it's supposed to be a way to pay homage to the games they love in a in a mode separate from the game without sacrificing the originality and integrity of the actual game through overloading it with references to previous games. Idk, that's my take away from it.

Maybe they become chompettes when they're killed by someone else that's not MC? They did talk about not forgiving Potato, and that Potato did something to them. Soo- maybe Potato killed the five of them (being a butcher and all) and we cooked and ate them?? And Potato didn't move on bc he killed them and then we killed him? Idk it's a bit of a reach, but maybe they have to be killed /in/ the cabin, labeling out the outside and the basement? Because Gregor became Turnip bc he was killed /in/ the cabin, Karin was killed in the basement, and Mariah and Anatoly died outside the cabin (Yes this is copy and pasted-)

The monsters in journey to the west: yeah obviously (Tangseng, the monk and only human in the group is constantly chased after by monsters and ghost throughout journey to the west for the purpose of being devoured, this is because it is said that his meat is not only most delicious/delicate, but will also grant great power and or immortality to those who eat it)

so following this theory, maybe the group that the player was initially with, are the ones who eventually turned into chompettes? assuming that the group were all friends, that would explain why all the chompettes besides potato are friendlier towards the player

In Deer Dream Studios’ comment thread they actually confirmed that the chompettes calling turnip “he” was intentional. So maybe it’s not Karin after all?

Pretty sure Turnip is Gregor. They said "he" and it has his color scheme. He also died in the cabin proper.

I'm assuming something similar: that the chompettes are people that "we" were closer to or that we showed the basement.

To me, it seems like they either died by someone else's hand in the cabin or they were victims we somehow grew close to which is why they linger and are willing to help in the first playthrough. if they are people who died by someone else, turnip would be Gregor because Karin killed him outright rather than letting him bleed out this time

@@WaffleFalaffel That’s a good point. I believe the creator of the game said that using “he” for turnip was intentional. Also, when you first see Gregor’s body in that playthrough, Karin says “I think he’s trying to speak,” which is very similar to what Cabbage says at the end. Turnip only showed up after MC offed his killer, so perhaps the Chompettes are spirits that the MC had avenged in that way.

I don't think that would be it, because if so then Karin would have turned into turnip at the end. But Karin was not turnip and when turnip is trying to speak, he is referred to as a he and deer dream studios confirmed in a comment that it was not a typo! :)

I think the wheat field children are Bread and Cornbread

well dreams are definitely referencing fairytales. can't clearly make out all of them, but the boy and the oven is a classic tale that many cultures have. Twins and the oven (in game) have a similar plot so I'm guessing it's just another variation. Some of the commentators said that MC is referencing Baba Yaga, who in slavic folklore was definitely eating people, especially children, who had iron teeth which was mentioned somewhere in the game (pretty rare attribute though), also she had a bone leg (remember the wooden plank in the bedroom) and a cabin on chicken feet (also remember the bone under the plank turned out to be chicken's)... So I see dreams mostly as to send your minds toward thinking fairytales, and then find similarities with Yaga, and then something else... Idk.

I think so, considering how Raspberry said something along the lines of "Cabbage may forgive you but I don't" which means the mc made some of the Chompettes feel for mc as mc felt for them. Forming a bond with them; some severed the bond and some cling on.

That might be it, but also on a technical stand point, the MC hasn't been eating for days(he's been sleeping in and out, and all the meat is stored in the basement) while Karin was stuck in the basement with all that meat, so it males sense that after those days, Karin is stronger than the mc

That completely dismisses Razael who shows up later in the game. He is the only one who the playable character let his spirit move on. I believe it’s separate people. There’s mention of 5 people being killed all in one night. Our characters here didn’t.

@@countissentertainment9051 Just playing a lil' devil's advocate here: Anatoly's squirrel? Maybe they're the cornbread. That's more of a crack theory, though. Besides, I agree. I think the Chompettes are a separate group. Especially since one ending implies that Karin turns into a Turnip Chompette.

I think the ending just shows what happened before the story but your connection/parallel theory is likely for the Chompettes and the victims/group the story is about

I think it could've been both if that makes sense. Showing what happened and what will happen once again.

This is true, she left the cabin willingly, but we can assume that she didn’t die from natural causes. She was killed, probably by MC. She became angry because she was willing to die for our character and then he betrayed her. Hope that clears it up a little!

@@crackersshot4419 I think it’s pretty heavily shown that while THIS story focuses on that group, it is implied that there have been/ will be other groups of people who come to the cabin

@Mia Ironstone well that could be the case why did they show recurring characters rather than generic faces od disembodied voice the fact that they are the same character there is no mention of a town since well it floods and the fact that the MC is an old man seemingly stuck in a time loop. Mabey I'm thinking too hard on this and I'm wrong but hey just throwing this out there

@@crackersshot4419 I think it’s more likely that these are flashbacks and stuff that gives us more information about what was going on in the first place that they didn’t show us in the first play through, including the hallucinations and ghosts that happened as a result of the previous murders.

i was thinking that was establishing the start of the game as well! instead of previous scenes i thought that gave good insight as to how this group actually got together and how the mc is sort of an outsider in this group. obviously the mc has a backstory that dates further than when this group was formed and that almost has to be the explanation for it.

Baba Yaga asks, basically word for word, "Were you sent here or did you come of your own free will?" and you're supposed to answer something like "Mostly of my own free will, but partially by coercion" or so. Essentially the answer is both, and Anatoly seemed to be starting to answer neutrally "Technically we were sent...[but we chose to come freely]" for example but Karin cut him off and answered wrong.

I was just saying it would have been nice to see a link or a pic of the channel, not just hearing the name. Other channels who have used MBH's work or who have even just gotten game ideas from him have done that. It's like, a professional courtesy. I was surprised MatPat didn't show that kind of professional courtesy - but I guess _some_ people are too busy for that?

It really has nothing to do with time, busyness, or anything like that. A portion of someone's work was used - used in a great context. My personal feeling is that a greater acknowledgement should have been made. Go ahead and look in the comments. You'll see congratulations on getting all the secrets/endings - but - he relied on someone else. And a bit more of a shout-out to the person who was relied on should have been made. @@LeonDogan Karin is Radish, the chompettes are previous victims, there's a six's chompette too who's Onion's sibling - Razael\Cornbread. The other clue of chompettes not being the guests is that they clearly state MC killed them and it was really messy, they also died in the cabin, whilst Mariah and Anatoly died by themselves and MC just harvested their corpses, and Greg died his own death due to what Karin did to him, not MC. That's also why MC is grossed out by what Karin did to Greg, cuz MC haven't killed anyone in a long time, clue: chompettes talking about arthritis emorse keeping MC from killing. I am not sure about dreams correlating to chompette's identities, as they seem to be just folk tales relating to Baba Yaga. Also Potato can't be MC because MC is ancient whilst Potato clearly states he dropped out of school to be a butcher. Also Potato has no idea how MC stayed alive for so long and got so strong, if he was MC - he would know and wouldn't be asking about it.

Mariah: There's plenty of bread down here. (brown, same color as Bread) Cabbage has 2 different colors, but both are green, Gregg's color. And I think that could be related to how he can be killed by you or Mariah, depending on poisoning? Onion and Ano are both blue, but I''ve not figured out the connection Berry and Mariah are both red, and Berry always seemed to be the one who *knows* what you're doing (just as Mariah) Turnip may be the "new" Player, (notice that Potato is no longer there), showing us that the Player has finally lost their laziness, thus they're no longer a "couch potato" (as the Chompettes kinda call you out on)

Also take the words raspberry said of "you wasted the other half" and when the MC after giving the other 3 a "charred meal" the next day he says the rest spoiled

The creator already said there is no time loop, so probably just another victim that _for some reason_ is not willing to forgive the dude that killed and ate them

to add to this, the thing that tipped me off to this idea is that I noticed that they both call the player character 'wretch'. Raspberry in this video, and Mariah when you confront her, Anatoly, and Gregor's spirits.

I have something to kind of go with you but on a different note that I haven’t seen anyone mention so far. If we remember in the first episode, you DISCOVER the chompettes (I think I spelled that wrong) I think they were always there but you discovered them because you have a resurgence of memory of these victims because your new visitors are similar to them. So I think rather than the chompettes BEING one of the four I think they represent because they are alike in MC’s mind. Like MC remembers the victim’s personality but swiftly forgot not only about them but their personality until reminded by the strong similarity between these new victims and your first ones. I don’t know if any of that made sense but that’s my take :)

@@kaffydaffy1091 to take this a bit further; maybe the pc does this for all groups? Like, just forget the personalities that the chompettes have and assign the personality of the current group? This would account for why many people see parallels between the chompettes and the victims. Some jsut don't correlate, like the bread being a jokester, but if there isn't a jokester in the new group, it will just become closer to whomever fits best. This would explain why there is a new chompette, who has to have a new basic personality (as many suspect the new one to be Gregor, maybe there hasn't been one who is emotionally capable of asking for last rights or being always optimistic) The reason why raspberry reminds of Mariah (I cannot remember her exact name) is because the raspberry is bitter about dying and whomever dies and feels the most rage becomes raspberry and so on Cabbage may just be the "leader" because there isn't any proper leader in a lot of groups and therefore becomes the most detached. I have no proof and it could probably easily be disproven, but I like the thought that they are both spirits and imaginary
