It's a Copyright Library! They are 6 libraries in the UK legally required to hold a copy of every single thing published in the UK, including every daily newspaper.
@@ElliotEdits I actually know this! I used to work with a different Copyright library and the publisher will basically box up and send in issues every week.
@@ArtemisScribe(That sounds more practical and way less fun than the person being paid to waddle to a stored and grab one of every newspaper every day...)
@ElliotEdits they do not! we have small, town and county libraries, but nothing so large as this. I dont think there's anything this big even in my state. somewhere like DC or NYC might have something.
your local library probably has more books than you’d think! if not, they’re always happy to get a copy of something. (this is assuming there is any sort of library system where you are) libby is a great app for this sort of thing too- it’s all free and you just use your library system account to access it
@@mellessin1191 In fairness, it is hard to compete with one of the biggest collections of books in the world 😂 If you're ever in London, it's definitely worth a visit!
the problem is how much running all the conveyor belts costs to build and maintain, plus hte amount of space, the BL has huge underground storage plus an entire different site mainly for storage of books that get delieved if people order them
No, it would be fucking stupid to require people to be at the library to read things. The British library has a copy of every book published on the UK, so it's different to a normal library
@@John-lp5xh Obviously the demographic has changed a lot. Many many more Muslims, if that's what you mean. I went to a school in N London that was totally ethnically mixed, there was someone from almost everywhere. No dominant group apart from the indigenous population. No conflict from my POV. I think that once a particular population become very much more numerous problems start. The black population fight amongst themselves, the Muslim population know that getting power in society is going to make them richer over all🫤
Wow they actually look taken care of. My uni had a beautiful collection of old stuff that just gets thrown out after they apparently become obsolete. Absolutely loved the old books, info was a bit on the outdated side but provided far understandable wording, illustrations, compacted knowledge, and smell triggered my sinuses but they were just the best.
Its a similar kind if thing. The British library is a repository of every piece of printed media published in the UK. Basically a massive archive that the public is also allowed to access.
Its a special kind of library that's basically a respository of every piece of printed media published in the uk, including newspapers. Its a really great source for historians, sudents, linguists ect but not necessarily meant for everyday readers. You can go to your local library for books you want to take home.
man the first time i picked up a Eye of The World copy around 9 months ago cause my coworker recommended it.. I told him Rand looked liked Nick Cage and we both had a GOOD laugh over it 🤣 he never noticed it after reading the books like 4-5 times the passed 30 years ! I can never see that cover the same again
@@ElliotEdits So far? 🤣 I finished it almost a month ago 😭 I did kinda struggle through books 8 and 10 but I flew through the rest. I think I did 24 chapters of The Crown of Swords in one day 🤣 also The Last Battle was better than I imagined in my head and with only the notes (though they were extensive) Brandon Sanderson did an amazing job on the ending! Had me crying basically the whole last 3-4 hours of the audiobook (I listen and read at the same time) But MAN there are still so many questions left unanswered!! Guess as Brandon says I’ll have to ask Robert Jordan myself lol
@@mk9beatz The reason I picked up the series was because I heard it had one of the most satisfying endings... Safe to say I wasn't disappointed either! 🤣
They had more librarians doing the menial tasks of fetching the books and you'd have to wait longer. The modern way is more streamlined and they can have the book ready for you in advance, also partially but not totally prevents vandals from damaging whole shelves full of books, especially with the recent attacks on artwork from climate activists.
Normally there are paper records of where books are kept. A fetcher would either already know via the Books Classmark where it was kept or if not they would check the records, go find it and hand it to the reading room. Most delays over 24 hours are due to books being held in external storage facilities.
used to have volumes 1 too 10 in hardback with the original covers which can't be bought except for second hand. Then I got some books from a charity shop and brought home some friends. A month later 6 volumes were eaten through by book worms. If you do same, make sure you put the books in air tight bag and freeze for 5-10 days to kill any insects
There is a massive massive storage facility in Boston Spa where the library holds most of the books etc. so much of the library is not held onsite in London which is I guess why you need to order days beforehand.
Man i just can’t do that in an afternoon i can do a 40 hour work week throwing bricks in a concrete heater easier than reading that book in a 3 day span ,i was even going to make a joke about it but I can’t …I should read more
cant be the largest collection in the world if you cant restrict people taking books home tbf. Curious if you can reserve the book at the reading room for multiple days though
Interesting point 🤔 Last time I checked you could book multiple days, providing somebody else hasn't requested it. But you would have to pick it up and drop it off each time you left the reading room
Is it possible to get access to the rare and valuable books in the British Library, or do you need some kind of bonafide justification for that, like a recommendation from a university saying you're a researcher... I'm sure they wouldn't let a nobody like me leaf through a Gutenberg bible or illuminated manuscript.
@@ElliotEdits It's Wheel of Time! Naturally it's VERY popular.😌I mean, it's a TV show now! Isn't that the nr.1 reason for Gen Z to check it out? Otoh, reading is done by listening nowadays isn't it?🤔
Dude's just sharing the process with us, which I am happy about 😂 but yours is an accurate statement. Would probably be more enjoyable for anyone without the hastle of filming
