This week on Wegs Garage, we find "top dead center" on our 1964 Triumph TR4's engine. This point in the crankshaft's rotation is critical for precisely setting ignition timing. Top dead center (TDC) is the furthest point of a piston's travel, when it changes from an upward to a downward motion. Our lump of an engine is missing both the crank pulley timing mark (our fault) and the timing pointer on the timing cover (work performed by others).
Our timing mark has been missing since we replaced the stock pulleys and belt with a Moss Motors narrow belt conversion kit. Luckily, the Moss kit contains great directions for locating TDC and marking the new crank pulley. In fact, you should probably read them instead! But if you are bored and/or would rather watch a couple amateurs do it, why not check out our video?
The timing pointer on the timing cover has always been missing. Not sure what the story is there. We made our very own pointer and stuck it on with some 3M VHB tape. VHB stands for "Very High Bond." This tape is unbelievably strong and can even replace welding in some applications. Think it will work for our pointer? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Thanks for this video. I watched a year or so ago and when I had 'the Healey Factory ' over here I'm Melbourne Aus rebuilding my engine I had them install the timing mark on install of the harmonic balancer. Should take a headache out of my timing when that time comes.

At TDC the rotor should point towards the #1 push rod tube. Yours looks to be 180 out, do you also have the #1 plug wire 180 out? This is well documented in the Factory Service Manual.

I just hope that you don't find your pointer in one of your tires one day. :) Related to this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ov5qxpfRCU.html And be forewarned that the timing chain tensioner will eventually wear its way through the timing chain cover, so be sure to replace the tensioner with the chain. Oh, and I like the Milwaukee hoodie. My Hole Hawg dates from about 1984. It still works just fine. :)

Cool video on the timing gear. Hopefully whoever put that on in the past did it right so we don't have to redo it 🤞. The TR4 chain tensioner is so crude haha. We replaced the tensioner, just not the chain at this time since it was well within spec.

Where did you get the piston stop and do you have the part#?

Dad ordered it from Amazon. Not sure exactly which one it is, but here is one very similar: www.amazon.com/Crane-Cams-99412-1-Piston-Stop/dp/B000CCDMB0/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?keywords=piston+stop&qid=1571235286&sr=8-7

Not too helpful for beginner. The music was distracting. Video instruction of actual process was omitted, typed in, or otherwise told, "this is what we did."

Annoying music and lag of information. Good thing Dad knows what he is doing..
