Finding UNPRESSURED Ruffed Grouse in November!

Ruffed Grouse Hunting in November can be feast or famine. This time of year my focus shifts to finding areas where the grouse have escaped to from pressure in the surrounding areas. These spots will usually produce a lot of fast action or nothing at all. The key is to not get discouraged if you are looking for a spot like this and are not finding birds, you never know when the pay off may be! On back-to-back nights, my brittanys, Yeti and Ember, put together some really good runs with lots of bird action!

I’ve come to the conclusion that Uplander is the only grouse-oriented channel worth watching on RU-vid. The other channels either try too hard to be artsy with long sequences, are Canadians who exclusively ground pound (people find that entertaining?), or hunters uploading shoddy footage from the field. This is a special thing you’ve got going on with your dogs & the quality of content. To the point, candid, and none of that fluff. Thanks!

I'm planning to head out in another three weeks to begin a new season. So this video is a good refresher for me. I limited out in ruffed grouse all three times I went out last year. That is fabulous grouse country with all the deciduous cover being down, and you've got a marvellous hunting dog there! I'll be watching this video again very shortly!

Its reassuring to see some footage that shows that I'm not the only one who struggles sometimes. I bought a used Remington 12 ga 1100 with a modified choke barrel. I wasn't satisfied with it for pass shooting on ducks and had a vented Poly choke put on it. That was not satisfactory for grouse so I bought a vent ribbed used skeet barrel and had it cut down to 23 inches. As I have read, a skeet barrel is choked the entire length of the barrel, so even tho I had several inches cut off where the traditional choke would be, the barrel still was choked. The combination was deadly on grouse, from close in to 35 yds. out. Being shorter was an advantage in brush. I put a side mounted scope on the gun and found that the barrel would shoot slugs and sabots for deer every bit as well as a rifled barrel I bought. This was the only shotgun I needed for many years. I discovered something quite by accident. I also discovered that if I practiced with clay pigeons before grouse season opened, I learned to take my time and get out ahead of the bird. My kills increased.

Some great dog work nice to see. Hitting pheasant tomorrow morning grouse Saturday. Picked up some spreader loads from flocchi.. talking cuts we have few different cuts going on. 3 state game areas ubly Pontiac and Lapeer . Years ago that ubly area was outstanding grouse cover but they let them Aspen stands go . We ran it last year full of deer but no birds . They are clear cutting it right now.. needed a net for that one bird those are hard to hit sometimes..

Another great video and pleasure to watch. Would love to hunt with you and your great Britts. What a day! Fantastic cover. Question: I’ve always hunted smaller covers in New England. When I had a dog years ago it was a close working Brittany (inside 40 yards). You are often calling a GPS alert out at 40-55 yards. You are hunting big covers from the looks and you obviously and justifiably trust your dogs. Do you ever hunt smaller ones and do your dogs quarter in close for you? That was one awesome retrieve under the log. Impressive. And the close point was more reminiscent of a Woodcock point! Wow. Good stuff. Thanks.
@UplanderLifestyle
@UplanderLifestyle 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment! 👍🏻 my dogs do run a bit bigger, and I like to drop them into bigger areas because of it. We will hunt some smaller spots if the cover is right and I feel like we can go in and find some birds on a short route. But for the most, we don’t because in the areas we’re in they will only produce a bird or two. It’s worth my time to go into bigger areas and find 8-12 birds on a walk vs going from multiple smaller spots to achieve the same bird numbers.
@darendth8594

Cool video, good tips. I’m learning the game and get into grouse in fair numbers, but I know I can do better. I normally target prime aged stands of of aspen adjacent to aged out stands. In your experience, do you ever have luck finding concentration of birds in smaller isolated cuts, independent of other aspens in the area? I’m looking at. Few 10-15 acre younger cuts. Second question, what kennel did your dogs come from? I like smaller pointers, I have a Munsterlander. A Brittany is on my list. Your dogs hunt like mine does. They are good little dogs.

There are two phases of ruffed grouse red and gray. I've hunted ruffed grouse from Minnesota to Alaska and they are always two color phases. In my experience it's always random and is one more attraction to these beautiful birds.

There's a few different color phases... Red, gray, brown, chocolate, a few more I think too. The most common are Gray and Red. I don't find as many red birds, but the areas that I do find the red ones in will consistently produce red colored birds every year.

I am moving back to Northern Michigan andI want to get into bird hunting again. I always used a single shot 16 gauge, shooting number five or six shot shells in the past. I picked up a 28 gauge over under. For bird hunting, what shot would you prescribe, seven and a half, eight or nine? Also what choke, full, improved/modified?
@UplanderLifestyle
@UplanderLifestyle 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for following along! For ruffed grouse hunting specifically I really like 7.5s and 8s, especially earlier in the year when the foliage is up. The small shots whistles through the leaves much better without losing energy compared to bigger shots. Plus the smaller shot gives you more BBs in your pattern, a huge upside when shooting in the woods. I will shoot open chokes because I want my pattern to be as big as possible. Skeet and Improved Cylinder. When the leaves fall I'll switch to a modified choke and If I'm really feeling frogy I'll throw a #6 in the second barrel.

@@UplanderLifestyle When I was growing up in Manistee in the 60-70's, the smallest I could find was #6. I have plenty of #6 for the 28, guess I better keep an eye out for 7.5 & 8's Thanks for explaining the chokes you use. Very helpful.
