I have a question. In order to find PAP, you need to throw the ball and get a oil ring first. But to throw the ball, you have to drill it first. However, didn't you need to know where PAP is before you drill a ball??? I am newbie to bowling. Isn't this a chicken and egg problem? Or you need to "waste" your ball to know you PAP? Does PAP differ from ball to ball? (If so, you will need to buy 2 balls to know the PAP???) or style to style (two hand vs one hand)?

Just but an inexpensive ball to get your PAP, if you are inexperience you don't need to get a high end ball right now, get something like a Brunswick Twist, practicer you game till you get a consistent ball track then worry about finding you PAP, then move into a mid priced ball, there are lots of good ones out there. Most bowlers just don't need the high end balls.

You can find your PAP without any tools. Here is how you do it for right handers, just reverse it for left handers. 1. Put a ball on the ball return. Any ball. A House ball is fine. 2. Warm up a bit until you are throwing your ball real good. 3. Wipe the ball clean and make a perfect strike shot release. 4. When the ball comes back grab it and place it “behind” the ball on the ball return so the other ball is touching the “right side” of your ball. 5. Line your ball up so the first oil ring, the one closest to your holes, is perfectly aligned to 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. Straight up and down vertically. 6. Once you feel it is perfectly lined up take a small piece of white tape and place it exactly on the spot where the other ball is “touching yours” on the right side. 7. Done. That is your PAP. 8. Throw a few shots with your ball and make sure the tape stays still as your ball starts up the lane. If it does you are good. If it moves a bit then repeat the process until it is still. But usually with this technique you get it the first time. 9. Tip: Use a spare ball instead of a ball with a core to find your PAP. This way you are using a neutral ball, as balls with cores can move your PAP around a bit. Also, the oil ring will not get absorbed and gives you more time to line it up.

This is why I'll drive hours to get a ball drilled by an actual professional and not the losers in my local alley's pro shop. The two jabronies that run that place are still drilling bowling balls like its 2003 and there's been no new information or development in their profession. I've seen friends who are just getting into bowling make the mistake of purchasing a ball from these guys and they get it out on the lane and it doesn't do anything close to what they expected or wanted because these guys just put holes in it and do the bare minimum. I wish Mo would come by and slap the piss out of them and teach them how to do things the right way.

So no need for tape. I've seen several ways to find the PAP this is the first I've seen that doesn't use tape. I quit bowling over 15 years ago. I have recently come back on the scene hoping to get into the PBA to fulfill my dream. I averaged 240 back when I was 14 years old. I didn't even know what a PAP was but I looked at all of my 8 balls and they were all drilled pin down. Recently I bought new balls and went to my local pro shop to have them drill them and something didn't feel right as far as bowling my scores were somewhat low and the ball just was not doing what I wanted it to do. Long story short I realized that all of my new balls are drilled with pin-up. Now I'm going to have to go back to the pro-shop and re-drill them. I just got back into bowling I do understand scores are going to be low until I grease the groove, but I was averaging 240 house and 225 sport bowling. I had a 95 percent spare average as well. Now after doing research on drill layouts I understand why things are funky. Definitely going to look into the PAP thing and see if that gives me an edge as well. Back when I stopped bowling I had in my arsenal the Big Bully Columbia 300(The best Ball I had), Columbia 300 Storm Trooper(not my favorite but loved the color), Storm Triple X Extreme(The strongest ball I had), Ebonite V2 clean(loved that ball), Storm Core Power(My first performance bowling ball), Brunswick Nemesis(Another strong ball), Brunswick Zone Classic(previously owned by a left-handed pro) and a Duke spare ball.

You stated your PAP can change if it's been 6 or more months since the last time you had your PAP. If that's the case than the guy that drilled my ball is a complete ass and not just a partial one at that. He was very quick with me and didn't bother measuring or doing anything to figure out my current PAP. Instead he just took a ball that I've had for 4 years and drilled the new ball to match exactly the way the 4 year old ball was drilled. He even got attitude with me when I said "the thumb is a bit too tight" by immediately following up all defensively "it's the exact same as your other ball" when he really should've just said "well if you feel it's a bit too tight we can make some adjustments". Instead he made me feel like a jerk for even suggesting a simple change with the freshly drilled ball. Of course I ended up being correct because by the time I bowled 3 games and left my left thumb was completely split open and the thumb had a good inch or more of skin that was completely ripped off my thumb. So now I have to go in yet again to let him know that I was correct about the thumb. But instead of deal with his passive aggressive bullshit I'll go to a completely different shop and never return. That's just how I am.

As though he would have measured any oval shape or adjustments made 4 years ago on the previous ball. What a dickhead. Good luck with that new ball though!

Mo is the Man! Learning so much from this guy. Is SURFACE more important on ball motion or is the CORE and SURFACE equally important on ball motion? Thanks!
@KennyGrinols
@KennyGrinols 5 лет назад
Mo will typically tell people that Core defines the shape of a ball, while surface defines how early or late that shape starts to form on the lane.

Mo I have a question is PAP always 90 degrees to your flare? and what happens to PAP when a player is a straight thrower?? Thank you for sharing information it means a lot

No my ring finger and middle finger knuckles hurt me after 3 games I mean sore. I tuck my little finger under pointer goes to 6or7 on back swing and rotate out on release. Is this correctable?

I know it's an ancient post but just in case you're still around or someone else with your problem reads this, yes it can be fixed. Usually it means the fingers need to be pitched out a bit more.

My ball track is on left finger hole and thumb.. how can I change that to look like the ball you are show in this video?
@thestime
@thestime 5 лет назад
I understand how time might cause your PAP to change just because you may be throwing it a little differently than you did years ago. I don't understand how the newer balls could cause this. If it is measured from the first oil ring after the ball immediately touches the lane then how would new ball dynamics have a chance to alter this that soon? Thanks Mo, you're the best out there!
@gegb2000
@gegb2000 3 года назад
Maybe the (new) core designs (symmetric and a-symmetric) may change the ball feel shifting the ball towards the heavier end in your hand and in turn changing the pap. Just guessing something here
@denmanfite3156
@denmanfite3156 3 года назад
Old comment but my guess is two balls with different coverstock/core may not respond well to the same throw. As you change balls and improve your throw naturally will change.

Radical is so bad oh my gosh, Tom smallwood is the only guy I know on tour that throws it, I dont even supply radical In my pro shop because nobody buys them, and Tom isnt even that good like he doesent even have 5 wins yet i dont think, not like hes belmo winning 4 times a year
@jazlarvonsteich
@jazlarvonsteich 5 лет назад
He's the only Radical pro staffer, but he is not the only tour guy throwing Radical. A bunch of Brunswick/DV8 staffers also throwing them, including Parker. Parker has done well with the Katana Slash. Rash and Ogle won the doubles tournament this year throwing the Squatch. Walter Ray has also had success throwing Radical on the PBA 50 tour. This video is not really about Radical equipment anyway. If you are questioning Mo Pinel's expertise, you have no business running a pro shop.

I'm not queshtining him buddy,, I'm just saying I dont like radical because barely anybody throws them and who cares if guys on tour like rash and walter throw one radical ball in the end who are they sponsored by,, Brunswick not radical,, also I work in the pro shop with jr raymond who actually is a pro bowler sooooooooo I dont know what u mean bud, if u dont believe me come to classic lanes in Rochester and u will see me,, so i guess i have no business running a pro shop even though I work with a pro bowler, I also work part time at turbo with jr also and chris sand who was a pro bowler sooooo
@jazlarvonsteich
@jazlarvonsteich 5 лет назад
I'm not going to sit and list every bowler throwing Radical balls on tour. I gave some examples. Radical is under the Brunswick umbrella. Phil Cardinale has explained, on numerous occasions, why they don't have a lot of staffers. I watch JR Raymond's videos so I know who he is. That doesn't make you a good pro shop operator though. Bashing a ball company is not the best thing to do while running a bowling business. Especially if you ARE working with a company like Turbo. This video wasn't even about Radical products really. It was about finding your PAP. Seems odd to bash Radical here, regardless of who you are.
