All this time and I didn't know my whole life was a existential crisis. "if you haven't found your voice in life, there is no way you can find your voice behind a microphone" thank you. I am now going to cry in my closet.

So it’s “Finding YOUR voice” much more than “Finding your VOICE”. Thanks for that, Bill. Profound! Really drives the point home that voiceover, like music or painting, is ART at the core.

I understand what it means to "find your voice" now. I just am worried I may not be able to. I have struggled with adapting my personality to better fit in with certain people my whole life. I can't remember how I saw and felt about things myself. I've started seeing a therapist and we are working to help me "find my voice". Thank you for this video, it's quite amazing!

@@RuberSocks It wasn't much help for me personally. However, I've grown more as a person and have found my voice. I still struggle to express my voice but I have found my voice. I'm now just working on expressing it. I highly recommend therapy for finding your voice. Though it didn't help me as much as I liked I don't believe I'd have been able to get on the path to do so at all.
@RuberSocks

@@dumbbumsc5329 Thank you! I know therapy probably works because my own life situation recently just improved, which suddenly gave my voice a lot more energy. In other words, a therapist who can help improve your life situation will improve your vocal energy! I will be looking for a good therapist though, because I know a lot are iffy and don't have much life experience.

Finding my true voice began when I stopped trying not to be an ahole... true story, I was stressing out that every one from my wife (who is my number one human) best friends and coworkers kept telling me I was a jurk or ahole or any number of things. And the harder I tryed to change the MORE people seemed to not want to be around me or work with me. So one day I was just done and was just an ahole...and *every thing changed!* My wife and I just clicked, my boss and colleagues were haveing fun being around me and strangers enjoying meeting me. It was not that I was rude or told people off, I just stopped caring how I looked or sounded or acted and was just me. I still struggle with it time to time but gone are hours wasted building personality sound stages that were just empty fronts for the scared child within me. Thank you for reading my experience, I hope it helps finding your voice.

I would love to hear how you made the transition. In my situation, I had to come to the realization that what I thought and felt was what really mattered. I also had to come to grips with the truth that sometimes I was unbearable. Working in a business partnership with my sons as equals helped. They called me out when I went off inappropriately. I wish I could have learned that when I was in the corporate world.
@therasheck
@therasheck 3 года назад
@@doylesanders I think the short story is that I just snapped, but in a good way. That is not perfectly true as several things had lead this incident that were very positive. From successive dreams that I had that vented my fears to meeting people who had walked a similar path helped me on my journey. I am still 20 years later learning not to let my past dictate my now but in all my life is good. Even in this crazy world we live in I know that I can't save the world with out as Jordan Peterson said "Making my own bed first." I hope my words helped you my friend. *Peace, if we can keep it*

Cool! Zen and the Art of the Voice Over! To my way of thinking, the best way to find "your voice" is to read poetry. Kipling and Poe are highly recommended. "The Roadsong of the Bandarlog" by the former and "Lenore" by the latter. Read these over and over - out loud of course - and after a week, your voice will manifest itself. Also wonderful are Poe's other poems about dead young women: "Ulalume"; "Eilalie"; "Annabelle Lee". If you can pull out the emotions locked in those poems, you're home free...

i dont know if i misunderstood, but i am just getting interested in voice over work just for fun. never done it, but the way id go about it is... if you are playing a character for example, who is the character? why are they saying what they are saying? how are they saying it... character : boss line : i want those papers on my desk first thing in the morning. in this case you would have to be demanding, a bit angry and firm. if you are not playing a character you are the character... so you have to decide as the character you are, how would you say this line? why are you saying it?.. how does it make you feel? whats the context? but i am probably very far off what you are talking about right? like i said i have never done voice acting before and that is my outlook on it.

I "liked" this video a while ago because it's so spot-on, and when it came up again in a marketing e-mail from Bill I listened again. It's still great stuff. Getting to know yourself and being comfortable with yourself can make worlds of difference in how you are seen in many areas of life. It's been a long, slow process for me, and has to be done consciously at first. Eventually you become comfortable at not thinking about how other people perceive you, just being yourself in the moment, and it becomes natural. Then, as Bill says in the video, you have found your voice. It's an exercise well worth fighting through.

Hi Bill DeWees, thank you very much for this inspiring video. It really touched something in me. I'm currently editing my first youtube video ever with voice over and I'm extremely surprised how hard it is for me. Even despite the fact, that I'm a quite good amateur theater actor. Recording voice over is way more personal and hard for me than acting on a stage. And than, what you said about the chameleon behavior and being rejected struck me like a lightning. That's not only voice over coaching, that's way more...

Great video, thanx for the great advice... I 'found' my voice years ago, as a retired professional drummer, who would also sing lead and back up, I have been told I have a good voice, but the trouble is, I don't like my voice, singing or talking. Now, I have 16 'Strange and Scary Stories' on Rakuten Kobo, Booksie, Wattpad, Facebook and other places and am getting ready to make them into audio books, hence the reason I am watching this video and others like them.

That's a very interesting way of looking at finding your voice. A signature voice is how you sound and what attitude or feelings you carry across to others. But in the examples you give its more finding your inner voice and what are your truths and passions. As actors we can pretend to like the precepts of a spot we are voicing, but if our moral compass or internal voice doesn't align with it, it may be tougher to be believable to others for that audition or job.

Wow, Bill, this could be the most important message of all that you have for us in your audience. It's far more important than the right gear and more important than developing talent. My only question is that I'm still searching for my voice and I enjoy reading fiction, but when I listen to myself reading a variety of things, the emotion and depth isn't there. Is it just a matter of continuing to find my voice and choosing the _right kind_ of fiction for me to read? There's a temptation to believe that I can just do an audiobook for whatever genre and book that I'm interested in reading.

Hi Bill. I can see how you use the reference to the chameleon and you make greta points. In my branding I use a chameleon icon because their ability to change colors is more likened to the emotional draw that we rely on as voiceover artists. The range of emotions that allows one to color the words. Great stuff from you as always!

Bill, I've been watching your videos and think they are really helpful. I've done voice work for years...and I know my voice, but still struggle at times to let it be heard. Here's what I'm hearing you say, Bill. To find your true, authentic voice as a VO artist is to find your true, authentic self or personality, the one that is or should be projected behind the microphone, as opposed to finding your true, authentic niche, which I would define as finding the genre of VO work that fits you best, which is within your comfort zone, and knowing what is not. In that sense, finding your voice and finding your niche are two separate issues. Does any of that make any sense at all? Hope so!

Bill, Thanks for this. You are dealing with very deep waters here and its very courageous of you. It raises the discussion for a follow up video. How do I decide on which jobs do I audition for based on "my voice"? Wish I could somehow give this two thumbs up! You mention that marketing people tend to do the chameleon thing, and I imagine that's true but I'm not from that world so I wouldn't be able to speak first hand. However I have some first hand experience with this in another context. I have begun to think that a conservative Christian background may actually be something of a hindrance in this matter of knowing ourselves, making it hard to discover our true inner voice. So often that environment (often inadvertently) rewards conformity so much that those of us in "the group" don't even realize how our real self gets buried, or we're so afraid we'll be discovered as to not "measure up" or be perfect in whatever image the leader of the group projects, that we just hide. That's the essence of in-authenticity, that we put our real self behind a mask. This makes it very hard to be authentic in any area. I'm not talking about blatant hypocrisy here either, just the kind of conformity that seems to pervade many such groups, both in fundamentalism and to a somewhat lesser extent in evangelicalism. It's been a VERY long process for me to get to the point where I think I'm close to really knowing who I am, relating to each aspect of my life authentically. Nice to finally get here, given that I'm turning 55 in a few months. Really good stuff in this video. Thanks!

Mark...I completely resonate with you words. That was my background as well. At age 57 I'm work very hard at finding my REAL self and bringing that to my work. The deeper I dig and the further the mask comes off, the better my vo career gets! Hang in there!

Go to a Christian addiction recovery group... I mean it! I found that my brothers in Christ were human and imperfect like myself. As a convert and a bit of a non conformist I struggled with how "clean and boring " everyone was. I discovered that I was being very judgmental in thinking that I was being judged. Christ is perfect, he doesn't need you to be, he wants you to be yourself, just better! Love you and pray that every day rocks for you and is a blessing!
