Do it along to a click, too. This means you work on keeping it tight and can progressively build up your speed while staying in control.

Thank you so much for this. I've been playing for 3.5 years but never sat myself with a practice pad to just improve my sticking. Those little tips are actually helping my improve a lot in my weaker areas. Thanks again.

Hey Jared! I know you probably hear this often, but I want to thank you... A month ago I started to practice your excercises and finally, I see results! Before I started, I thought it is going to be boring, but right now (and I still don't understand, how this happened) I love it and I enjoying practicing and watching my progess. THANK YOU FOR THIS!

You have caught the definitive spirit of finger bounce execution! I first read about this in George Lawrence Stones book written long ago and dedicated to the incomparable talent Joe Morello. Thanks for the insightful lesson. I am grateful.

Thanks, Jared! I've been learning to get more finger control in order to speed up my rolls. I have been practicing to strengthen my left hand (my right hand is fine, but with my left hand it feels really awkward) and I was close to quitting. I didn't even know if I was doing it right or if my practice was correct, but after seeing this video I'm really going to dive into it again. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Chose to practice or you are finished"...... The Best Drummers in the world... Tom & George.... they know every thing....but when you ask & they all say, "No I am still practicing"....... The Best was..... "Chose to practice or you are finished"!!!!!..... Well said (Y) &.... Regarding the video... WELL DONE (Y) (Y) (Y) (Y) (Y) ... Keep Posting. You are already Subscribed. I've been playing the drums for 15 years, I don't mean to blow my own trumpet but I can handle a drum kit quite well. I'm even a singer/drummer albeit perhaps a better singer. That being said I've never relied too much on speed in my style but rather power and accuracy, I had a couple of drum lessons and nobody ever mentioned the finger technique. I love metal and have actually managed to blast beat using my wrists! It's exhausting and strainful and I then realized something was wrong. I've come across many tutorials that don't explain how to do the basics. They all boast about how easy it is and I really struggle with it. Thanks for reminding how much time is required to use fingers accurately and to gain speed. I've been practising for a day almost non-stop, alternatively using my right and left hand - It's something I've always done with paradiddles and stuff like that. Could you however explain whether or not our thumbs should stay parallel to the stick or not? I've noticed your thumb was slightly lifted up but when I do that my thumb seems too stiff and I can't hit it any faster.

LOUDSTEEL it being parralell means thats ur grip.jareds way of gripping is different hence why his thumb is up om the stick.i have the same grip that u use.so ur grip is fine it just takes getting used to

i was taught this technique years ago we called it stone killer start with 1 - 10 then 10 hits with each stick back single strokes. its a fantastic technique. I've been drumming for 15yrs but have only just started playing again after 7yrs always good to go back to these exercises.

Great exercise man!!! Just getting back into drumming after not playing for 20 years. Of course the left hand got really slow. This is just what I've been looking for to help that speed!! As the previous comment, most instructor don't talk about finger techniques. This is the best!! Thanks so much!!

This is a great lesson. I am a big Keith Carlock fan and he discusses finger technique from a traditional grip standpoint. The principal is the same. Jared teaches this technique just as Keith Carlock does. The difference is that Jared stresses the point that patience is required. He is realistic about how long it takes to get this technique. Keith doesn't (I don't think) talk about how long it took (or it takes) to get this to the point he has. Still, two great teachers and one great technique.

First time I saw this technique was from Dave Weckl, tried it a few times, but never had the patience to practice it. I've been at if seriously now for about two weeks after playing drums for roughly 36 years. Absolutely fantastic chop building, confidence enhancing exercises. Glad to see that I have been practicing correctly. Thanks, Jared for sharing this video, been receiving your emails for about two years, and never watched any of your videos, I think I'll start now. :-)

@SuperDRUMZONE I've been using it for about 1 year and a half, and it gets better and better, I almost couldn't do it at first with my left hand, but now my left hand is much more solid than my right hand with the finger technique. I can pretty much go to 250-260 bpm(16th notes both hands combined)

Hey Jared! Great little lesson. I thought I'd maybe add a little, a pattern I learned from some drumming buddies in college. It's one that I still practice with today. Using your finger technique, single strokes... the cadence practice pattern is as follows... IE. 8(R) = 8 single right hand strokes; 8(L) = 8 single left hand strokes 8's - 8(R)8(L) 7's - 7(R)7(L) 5's - [RRRLR][LLLRL] 6's - 6(R)6(L) 4's - 4(R)4(L) 3's - 3(R)3(L) 2's - [2(R)2(L)] X 2 1's - [RLRLRLRL] 1's DOUBLE TIME [RLRLRLRL(R)^]

For strength building with exercises and rudiment practice a nice pair of Vic Firth SD1 sticks are great. Make sure to focus on building good habits when it comes to holding with correct grip (back of palms up), hand position, and keeping even strokes. SD1 sticks are nice and thick; this will ensure you build up strength in your wrist and forearms early on. Stick with Vic Firth as a purchase from them will ensure balanced sticks;this is vital for keeping left and right hands at the same strength

If you wann practise give this a try: Hold your stick straight up, and than drop your wrist slightly back until the stick points like 45° or so to the outside. You just wanna bounce the stick back up straight, only using your fingers. It works great, since your "drumming" against gavity and get the same sensation of pull or rebound every time without having to worry about hitting the drum corretly. Try it, it works great.
@Drumgirl4God1
@Drumgirl4God1 11 лет назад
@DrThemo Actually yes it helps if you use a thicker stick cause it's like putting more wait for your fingers to push. It will definitely increase your speed. But you can do it with 5A's when you feel comfortable.
