I think Zukerman is one of the very best violinists in the world! His technique is so clean!

IT’s specifically because he plays viola as to why he’s unique in the violin. Maxim, Hillary, etc. all world class. But, when they really get their weight into the instrument, which you are taught on a viola since it requires more to get the same results as violin, the resonance is just worlds apart from each other

I thought he was going to say don't prioritize comfort over what's best musically, but he went in a different direction

He’s right. I might add that it is wrong to play with pain. My teacher told me to never try to play through the pain. I always look for the most comfortable way to play, then try to add the color.

he never said it is okay to play with pain. Artists often don’t make choices by the path of least resistance, and I found the point he made to be that while there are artistic priorities in choosing fingerings, comfort is another priority

Only when you're comfortable and not making a bunch of compensations can the true feelings come through! *but only playing for the sole sake of being comfortable also doesn't sound very convincing hahaha.

I think it has to do with memory too. If you won’t remember to do the fingering that is not the “comfortable” one, then just do what is comfortable and what is natural to you (almost automatic, like when you’re playing on “autopilot”)
