Little advise: be a little more frugal with the adhesion promoter (here much is to much, it's no paint) , next time first use a light color primer (white or light gray) since you have black and want to go to a light tan color. After the color layer it's best to use a clear coat (gloss, matt whatever you prefer).
@TheNewMechanic

Thanks Frank! Good to know! I figured about the light color primer (only after I was done) but didn't realize I used too much adhesion promoter :)

Hey brotha these seats are beautiful, any cracks or noticeable changes/paint transfer after having them for a couple months?
@TheNewMechanic
@TheNewMechanic 3 года назад
Hey man, thanks! Passenger and rear seats are flawless however the drivers seat does have some cracks. I'm thinking the cracks were there before I dyed them and the dye spanned the crack. Then given enough flex and time it cracked them. I'm planning on sanding the cracks down just a bit and then using leather filler and re-dyeing. I think if I had used leather filler in those cracks and used lighter coats of dye it wouldn't have cracked open. Other than that everything else is holding up well! Thanks for watching!
@KappnSkips
@KappnSkips 3 года назад
@@TheNewMechanic sorry for the late response, glad to see every seat minus the drivers held up, did you end up sanding, refilling and dyeing the drivers seat again? All I could think of is possibly diluting the paint with additional water to give it more flex. Currently holding on to grey m3 seats and I'm afraid to spray them haha, but all in all your seats came out wonderfully
@TheNewMechanic
@TheNewMechanic 3 года назад
@@KappnSkips I did not end up re-dying. But what you said was my exact plan if I did. I think starting with grey seats would have helped SIGNIFICANTLY! I wouldn't expect any cracks to be as apparent and you'd need less dye than I did. Also thinking if you diluted the dye, as you said, it would help to get thinner layers which would be good for the final finish.

Hey thanks for watching! I used a cheap spray gun from harbor freight (www.harborfreight.com/120-cc-hvlp-touch-up-air-spray-gun-61473.html) at around 25 to 30 psi. Good luck on your project!

Do you find spraying is key? Im currently testing my rear bench with the sponge and when it dries the color change is just not noticeable enough. (going from dark grey to black..)
@TheNewMechanic
@TheNewMechanic 3 года назад
How many coats have you tried? The first 2 coats you won't see much of a change. I'd expect thinner coats to adhere better and have a better finish but obviously less of a color change per coat. Spraying took a LOT of coats to go from black to orange.

Check Google Maps for a "Car Audio" shop, call them and see if they have recommendations for a shop that can do car leather repair. When they repair the leather they'll have to dye it so they should be able to restore your leather using dye. Alternatively, you could also get new leather from a company like lseat.com.

Hey just saw your comment! The places where I used the adhesion promotor, cleaned the leather well, and applied the dye in light coats are holding up really well! I'm really only having issues in two places. On the drivers seat there were some cracks in the leather and I applied the dye too thick. It caused the dye to span the crack. Just like leather, the cured dye is very flexible but not really stretchy. So each time I sat in the seat it would tug at those cracks to open up a little bit and after enough times the dye cracked open and you can see the black leather underneath. Also, the top coat really protects the dye so you could rub a white cloth on it and you wouldn't get dye coming off. If I were to do this again, I would probably use the foam pad that came with my kit to apply the dye. I was worried it would leave streaks which is why I opted to spray. However, I realized afterwards that the streaks would go away as the dye built up. But using the pad would have helped to prevent me from applying thick coats which are what caused the dye to bridge the cracks rather than lay in the cracks.

I used something like 96oz of dye. I think that was mostly due to starting with black leather. I'm thinking if I used a white base coat it would have worked better with much less dye. And the color is a custom color match to a paint card named "Japanese Koi" (www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/P210-7).

@TheNewMechanic
@TheNewMechanic 3 года назад
@@myguncallstheshots7896 To go from Black to Blue, probably 64oz. I would recommend using the sponge to apply the dye rather than spraying. Spraying seemed to waste a lot of dye. Also I'd HIGHLY recommend the adhesion promotor, at the very least in the high wear/use areas. For example, the door handles I didn't use it and I likely didn't use light enough coats and it's started the peel. However the seats look good and I used it there.
@kylelangley8818
@kylelangley8818 3 года назад
If you used white as a prime/base coat, the black wouldn’t be visible.
@TheNewMechanic
@TheNewMechanic 3 года назад
I agree! I think the black is poking through because I didn't use some really thin coats of a base like white. I also think if I would have used a sponge to apply the dye it would have filled any cracks rather than bridging them. And then when you sit on the seat it would stretch the cracks and cause the dye that bridged the crack to crack and expose the black.
