Howdy folks!
In this video I finish building the Giant Chess Board for my Giant Chess Set and apply an epoxy resin clear coat finish. this is epoxy resin finish is similar to the finishes used for finishing bar tops.
Playing chess on an over sized board like this comes with its own challenges. Building a chess board this size comes with just as many challenges. The novelty of the size of this board is obvious... but the slightly unexpected thing is that a large board like this also shows off more of the natural beauty of the wood that you use to make the board. In hindsight is makes sense... but I guess I just got caught up in the building and didn't expect to be so delightfully rewarded with lots of beautiful color and nuance int the wood grain patterns. This epoxy finish is definitely worth giving a try! Finishing a piece of woodwork is always the most satisfying part of the process.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Best regards!
Conrad Craft

Great job my friend!!!... but remember... chess players are annoyed by the brightness on the board, a matte finish would have been fantastic!!! Greetings from Argentina!!!

Great work, but why didn't you build the corners to be assembled in a 45-degree angle?

That's what videos like this are for. Find a simple project and make it. When you're done, do another. Keep making your projects progressively difficult as you become familiar with the processes involved. Don't confuse uneducated for untalented. RU-vid and home Depot exist, so get educated and get some skills.

I'm partially thru your chess videos and was wondering if you could list the lumber amounts you needed? I believe you said 8/4? I'm new to woodtruning and think I'm going to shamelessly copy your project!! Thanks in advance, Randy

Nice board and set. However the only thing I would ding on is the Knights. They appear to be out of proportion with the rest of the set. To me they appear to be too small from the brief snap shot in the end. They are nicely carved no doubt but they just seem out of place with this jumbo set. Mega Chess does an awesome job with proportion sizing their Knights with their jumbo sets.

Nice job on the board. It came out beautiful. My opinion only: I think I would have put a thin 1/8" contrasting border around the internal board squares, only to differentiate between board and border.
@ConradCraft
@ConradCraft 5 лет назад
Thanks. Yes after building this board I agree... A thin contrasting boarder would have made it better.

Really enjoyed seeing the board come together, but what happened to ‘part 1’....couldn’t find it on your channel...?....and I’m looking forward to seeing the completion... I have already, inspired by you...designed my own set, and obtained the wood to work...I shall be embarking on this project soon and will share some photos with you... I hope I can do justice to your work and inspirational videos.... Thank you...👍🏻
