Today, I'm finishing up the resin and wood cutting board project. I'll be flatting and smoothing the surfaces as well as sanding and applying a top coat finish to seal off and protect the piece. Absolutely beautiful Zac! You can always use a thin coat of sanding sealer after you sand with the orbit sander and that will hide most of the swirl marks.

That came out beautiful, Zac! It would make great wall art, and I think depending on what you put in the center it would also make a great (yet complicated) picture frame - although that would probably be easier to achieve with a long "slat" blank mitered into a square - but I digress. This will make a great countertop piece. Thanks for sharing!

@skoue4165 5 лет назад
Zac, Glad you talked about the food safe aspect. I agree with all your points. Actually cutting on the board would destroy it in short order. Really wet acidic foods would be the things that are most likely to leach out nasties and it's not likely that one would put things like that on that board (one without a lip). BTW the two things I have seen that seem to work well in getting a smooth surface are flame polishing, though that is dependant on the plastic and the whole surface has to be plastic, and using a thin coat of the same resin painted on. Otherwise I thing you just have to go super fine on the sanding and then go to polishing. Really turned out nice though.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 5 лет назад
Yeah, just seems like the whole food safe thing is too vague, and I really don't have enough knowledge about it to feel totally comfortable using any resin regardless of certifications with food. Until I can have an unbiased expert give me a green light, it's much easier to just keep food out of the equation for me. Great tips on polishing. I don't think epoxy or urethanes work with flame polishing, might go back and try to resurface it down the road. I'm actually thinking about making the piece into a lamp =D

That's some good work. I believe Alumilite recently got FDA food safe approval once cured. I also think instead of lacquer at the end, I would have polished it then used butcher block oil on the wood. All said though, that board came out looking really good.

@rallywagon261
@rallywagon261 5 лет назад
Oh, I dont htink he should have done anything different, thats just what I would have done. That said, my problem with another layer of epoxy is that, I would be worried about flaking. I would be using it at least lightly as a cutting board, and a thin coat of epoxy over the wood is likely to chip after a few chops of a sharp knife.
@Devinediva111

@glofishdesigns
@glofishdesigns 5 лет назад
So pretty! 😍 Most epoxy resins are “FDA Compliant” and considered generally safe for incidental food contact when fully cured. They are not “food safe” so I wouldn’t put food directly on it, or cut on it, where the resin would become compromised. Even if it was ok to put food on top of it, cut marks would harbor bacteria. I love the idea of using it as a serving tray. If you’re interested in making another one to be used as a cutting board, I’d love to see one half resin/ half wood where the wood could just be oiled and would be ok to cut on. Awesome job, as a resin artist, I love your channel! I hope to learn to turn one day. :)
