I made a resin and wood cutting board blank using wormy walnut wood and epoxy resin. This was a really fun project, and a great way to dip your toes into larger projects like resin river tables. I added some fun effects in the resin part using colorshift powder and pearl powders.
I finished up the cutting board the following week, check it out to see how it turned out: • Finishing up the Resin...
If you are looking for colorshift powder, I sell the blue/purple on my website: nvwoodwerks.co...

That looks promising - I'll save calling it awesome for the final piece. I am curious to see how long it would stand up to regular cutting board duties. The wooden ones I made are doing fine but the surface is getting a good beating. I wonder whether the sheen might suffer on a resin-based one. Then again, I have no idea how resin will behave when cut like that. Thanks for sharing, Zac!
@ZacHiggins

Hey Dominic, great to finally meet you in person at MC!! I think the surface would be pretty much done for the first time you use it. Seems like it would be better to look at instead of use as a cutting board

Stonecoat is fda approved. I went so far as to contact fda and as long as it is clear coated itsfda approved but you must do two layers equal to 1/4 an inch.

Hi Zac, I think your board turned out fantastic. As far as food safe epoxy is concerned, I'm aware of two brands that can be used for such purposes, Art Resin and Envirotex Lite. There's probably others. What I've read indicates that what you have to watch out for is bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol F (BPF). Without either of these, the FDA approves epoxy for food contact. Having said that, however, I agree that it would be a shame to scratch up such a beautiful piece! When I make wood cutting boards, I make them thick enough to be sanded down and refinished a couple of times, and I find that people still barely use a board that has a pattern/design in it. BTW, both Art Resin and Envirotex Lite are fairly expensive, around the $100/gal mark! Still, I'm about to try making my first epoxy board. Hope it turns out half as nice as yours!

Stonecoat counter tops has a food safe resin...here is what they say about it. I would use it for a final coat so it covers any of the additives you may have used. Hope your trip was good. Love the colors in this. This is the material we use to create our Stone Coat Countertops and Wood Slab Tops. Watch our how-to videos to learn to make your own amazing surfaces! This product is formulated for this purpose and is only found here! Stone Coat Countertop 1/2 Gallon Kit will cover 10+ square feet of surface for both the Color FLOOD coat and Clear FLOOD coat ( about 3oz of Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy per Square Foot per coat) . If you are doing a Wood Slab you will need to seal with a thin layers of Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy before the flood coating. We use 1oz per Square Foot to SEAL wood slabs. We like to apply 2-3 seal coats on raw wood slabs before we apply our Flood Coat. MDF needs no seal coats. We like sand and polish our slabs and countertops to bring them to the most high end look and feel possible. This is optional and many customers are happy with their results with out the extra work. (Each 1/2 Gallon of Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy will cover between 10-12 sqft) Call with any questions. (541) 450-1976 Do not pour this material over 1/8" per coat, for deep thick pours use our casting resin. Our Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy is Heat Resistant-Scratch Resistant- Food Safe- U.V Resistant- Water Resistant- Renewable- Easy To Clean- Zero VOC- 100% Solids- DIY friendly.

I enjoy your videos and confess I know nothing about resin. I am a woodworker and was wondering if you can run something like your breadboard through a planer to get it to thickness?
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 5 лет назад
Yeah, you can machine it just like wood. It is a little different since it's solid, so it will require a slower feed rate and will feel a bit different than wood
@tompuskar4426
@tompuskar4426 5 лет назад
Nice idea but I think you may have gone a bit overboard with al the colors. did you stabilize the wood before use? How long did you let the first two seal coats cure? Looking frward to the next video on cleanup.

@he-mansuncle7661
@he-mansuncle7661 5 лет назад
I don’t think that you went to far! You’re going to be cutting and planning it down and that’ll remove some of the effects. Of all of the different types of resin I have used, my understanding is that once fully cured(7-10 days), you can use them to put food on but you can’t or shouldn’t be using them as an actual cutting board. That’s for the resin that doesn’t have any VOC’s and is compliant with CFR Title 21, Part 175.300 and 175.105 for direct and indirect food contact from the FDA.

Most resin is 'casual' food safe after curing completely. That is, you can set your sandwich on it, or knead dough. But you should not use it as a plate with wet food in longer contact with it, or a cereal bowl. And for sure no hot coffee or tea mugs! Alumilite Amazing Clear cast epoxy complies with FDA CFR 177.2600 which specifies the proper treatment for articles intended for use in producing, manufacturing, packing, processing, preparing, treating, packaging, transporting, or holding food. Resin must be mixed 1:1 by volume (not weight) in a smooth sided cup to ensure complete blending. Allow a full 7 day cure before using castings for food purposes. Pieces are suitable for cold or warm food contact only. Cured pieces are not dishwasher, microwave oven or conventional oven safe. Unfortunately, the Alumilite dyes do not have the food safe designation, not because they are unsafe, but simply because the manufacturer hasn’t done the required testing (which is expensive). So a clear coat over dyed resin would be appropriate.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 5 лет назад
That's kind of what I got out of the regulations too. I felt it was just not really worth messing with unless I can get a reliable source to guarantee it is 100% safe
@susanvasquez3625
@susanvasquez3625 5 лет назад
@@ZacHiggins I was presuming (I know, I know!) that the fact they had NOT tested their dyes, meant that they HAD tested the resin. Hmmm... I wonder if the FDA site gives out info like that?
@laurenbeckerle7977

Even if something is food safe if you're putting it into contact with really acidic foods that could cause a problem. I used to do functional pottery and there's a lot of glazes, reds mainly, that fall into that area. I think you're right, or that's what I did, just stay on the side of extreme caution.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 5 лет назад
I hadn't even thought about acids, thanks for mentioning that. I just don't have a good enough understanding to feel comfortable putting these things into direct food contact use, much easier to just stay away from it for now =D

@@ZacHiggins my husband works in R&D and it's kinda the same thing, so many possibilities that it's hard to test for them all. In college one of my ceramics professors said "Yea the red glaze is food safe. Would I drink orange juice out of a cup glazed in it everyday? Nope"
