@Tyler Hopkins you're posting a ton of pro-collectivist falsifications all over the place, and I'm sure your stamina for spewing misinformation is higher than mine for correcting you, but your understanding of capitalism is obviously derived from 'modified facts' given to you from those who hate the distributed ownership of capital model. Prices in a capitalist system are dynamic and constantly fluctuating based off of how willing users and producers are to obtain an item at a given price. Nobody 'sets' prices in capitalism, and arguments trying to crowbar 'price setting' into capitalism betray their central-ownership-of-capital origins. Ie, you full of it and don't know what you're talking about, you just a commaboo.

They were 100% considering it but they have not joined due to their nations being right between the two alliance fronts. Essentially if they join either Alliance and a war breaks out their country will suffer a lot of damage. Remaining neutral is their best option sadly. That being said NATO would protect them from Russian invasion but given their geographical location NATO would understand them not officially joining NATO even when their cultures and views align perfectly with that of NATO.

as a Swede, I think Russia is paradoxically increasing the likelihood of Sweden joining NATO. Membership has always been controversial and an unpopular idea throughout my life, but when Russia is throwing it's military around and trying to threaten us into agreeing to never join NATO, it's actually making Swedes more positive to joining the alliance, we don't like being threatened and told who we can and can't ally with
@epampoefmkfkefpeao4291

In my opinion, Russia threatens Ukraine with invasion, because for a century the two countries shared the same interests and had the main targets, however after Ukraine’s perspectives changed, Russia did not want to let go of Ukraine, as Russia fears Ukraine will follow the path of the Baltic states and join the EU and then NATO, posing a threat to national security as yet another NATO state would be sharing a border with Russia. The biggest leverage that Russia has in Ukraine is its large Russian and russian speaking population, a large number of whom view Russia in a favourable manner, and wish for Ukraine to continue cooperation with Russia. Sweden and Finland on the other hand, do not have large Russian populations, and because of their neutral policies, the two have not had major disputes with Russia in post war times, therefore being in mutual benefit with each other, where the Soviets and now Russians were pleased that two big countries with strong militaries are not a part of a hostile cooperation, and Sweden with Finland were pleased that a superpower that is at their border, did not exercise nor flex its military capabilities against them. Therefore in my opinion I do not think that Russia poses threat to Sweden nor to Finland, as long as they stay neutral.

The military history part about Finland has a slight inaccuracy. Most of the territories Finland lost were already lost after the Winter War, including the second largest city and a large portion of the best arable land. The Continuation War was mainly motivated as an attempt to regain them to give the war refugees their homes back, which failed but the annexed area was mostly the same as it had been after the Winter War.

I try to ignore for a sec the names of the countries, if there was an ongoing conflict in country A, right next to the border with country B, country B would definitely always have their forces moved close to said border, otherwise they are really dumb leaving themselves exposed to a conflict spilling over onto their territory. I am hopeful that the actual moves on all sides will not reflect the emotional overreactions in the media headlines. You are correct, however if we look far back enough, we see NATO prodding Russia into these actions by encroaching in. The tensions in Crimea and with Ukraine are related to this. If Russia does not act seemingly to take military measures to prevent NATO becoming a closer neighbor through possibly Ukraine, then it will make Russia seem weak and Putin needs to look strong or he will lose support of the elite. NATO knows this and has created an intricate game where no matter the choice, they will have a victory. If Russia does nothing, Ukraine will probably go with NATO. On the other hand as a consequence of Russia showing force, this will push Finland and Sweden into NATO out of insecurities. For world peace, the best option could be that Putin would be willing to give up his personal status and pride and opt a strategy of no military provocation which would be understood as weakness by the Russian elite. This would give less opportunity for NATO to try provoke Russia into a conflict that creates the feedback loop of further NATO integration. However the Russian elite would then seek a strong replacement to Putin, and this could go a very bad way with someone who is less diplomatic taking the place.

Ukraine was in a somewhat similar situation before 2014: neutral (no NATO) in favor of the weak peace with Russia. After the fall of USSR, Russia started infiltrating our high cabinets and monopolizing huge sectors of economy. Investing big money into our politicians, they pushed uneconomical gas contracts and trading agreements. We were digging a debt grave for ourselves. Crimean ports were rented by Russian militaries for decades. Our ministry of defence was a Russian citizen. It was a catastrophe in the making. In 2010 our internal politics got overwhelmed with Russian influence (forced spread of Russian language in USSR was a huge factor), we were choosing between 2 highly pro Russian candidates for presidency. In 2013 under the pressure of high gas prices, stagnating economy and artificial debt to Russia, pro Russian president Yanukovych was forced towards a deeper integration with Russia, while national consensus was very strict towards EU, less towards NATO. It triggered a revolution, like a short circuit. In 2014 citizens overtook almost all high offices and opposition leaders were discussing the terms of peaceful reelection. It was the weakest moment of Ukrainian government. In February 2014 Russia rapidly annexed Crimea using rented military objects as bases. Then the conflict moved to eastern part of Ukraine and continues to this day. They weakened us until they saw an opportunity to attack and stabbed immediately. It was always a plan and it is valid for EVERY Russian "ally". Don't play games, Finland, Sweden, the rest. You cannot negotiate anything with Russia, like you cannot negotiate with an alligator in water. You try swimming your fastest 30m in life and if not lucky fight with whatever weapon you have. It's important to remember that though we know about them now, most of the entangling treaties that caused WW1 were not public knowledge, but a web of sometimes contradictory back room deals, and the war started ultimately because several of the nations very much wanted a war, not realizing they would end up with that war - much larger scale than desired, quickly divorced from much of the initiating goals. No one* in Europe wants war, on any scale. And the relationships are by and large out in the open, or fairly obvious. So though it seems related, the situation is vastly more stable today. The portrayal of Finnish history, 1939-1945 is a bit off. Finland managed a stalemate in the Winter War, but finally the Soviets applied overwhelming force, and defeated the Finns. Finland lost a big part of Karelia as a result of Moscow's desire to push the border away from Leningrad; it also had to lease Hangko, a strategic port, to the USSR. In 1941, Finland joined Germany in the attack on the Soviet Union, in order to regain its lost territories. This is known to the Finns as "The Continuation War". The war on the Eastern Front went badly for the Axis, and in addition to losing what she had regained, Finland also lost the nickel-mining area and port of Petsamo; it assumed the status of a neutral state in the Cold War.
@lookingforsomething
@lookingforsomething 2 года назад
The definition of victory really depends on war goals at this point. When the USSR grand offensive started towards the West, most countries were swallowed up by Soviet forces. Finland at that point aimed to stay independent, it was the only reasonable goal, seeing as how there was 0 chance to counter the over 100 times amount of tanks 1000 times more plains and less than 100 times the soldiers. It has been speculated to no end why Stalin didn't decide to fight all the way to Helsinki, but many likely scenarios involve Stalin's haste to take Berlin and turning a large battlefront into an ally in the war (the later war of Lapland against nazi Germany) was extremely beneficial in getting to Berlin before the allies. War in Finland might have tied down even ten divisions for even several months perhaps. Also the Allies were worried for the land grab that Soviet Union was exercising, and they put great pressure on the Soviet Union. One can argue that Finland lost, but it's completely plausible to say that they achieved their goals and won the defensive war. It turns into a debate about definition and *opinion.* Personally I see deterring the Soviet tide as a distinct victory.

It was never the policy of neutrality that protected Sweden during World War II. The concession policy allowed troops to transit and steel exports to Nazi Germany and banned news of and criticism of Hitler. It was never the policy of neutrality that protected Sweden during the Cold War, but strong defense and, above all, the NATO's nuclear umbrella and presence with American troops in Western Europe. There was never a war. If there had been a war, neutrality would not have been to any help, as little as the neutral neighbors attacked during World War II. Another fact correction, you said that Finland and Sweden have kept their strength since the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is more true for Finland, but Sweden totally dismantled its forces and ended the voluntary conscription to let the army, airforce, and marine become underfinanced. The thinking was that now only a tiny military was required for "international peace missions." At that time, the future was bright and peaceful. Although the conservative in the parliament voice for NATO, the sitting left-socialist steadily believes that non-alignment reduces tensions in the high North. I think it would be unwise to ratch up the pressure by joining NATO. This issue will only be a reality if the European security degrades severely, i.e., much more than saber-rattling and military posturing. The general public perceives that Russia has become a "real" danger in the high North to Finland (and Sweden). Then, I believe there are a few choices. One either formally joins NATO, alternatively only chooses to strengthen the alliance with the USA, or continues the non-alignment. The latter, however, requires massive funds for the military to defend the country. The aggressor chooses to respect the neutrality and be without alliances, and underpowered military force is a catastrophically lousy solution. Finland understands the situation much better than the Swedish government, with the left party's dependence. The best Kremlin can do is to stand down their aggressive posture. Otherwise, their security position may become even worse.

Finland and Sweden are not members of NATO, but there is a trilateral agreement between these two countries and the US from 2018. The most interesting part is the preparation to receive a US Marine Corps expeditionary force in case of war in Northern Europe. Materiel for a mechanised brigade is already stored in Trondheim, Norway, and the US force can be used in several scenarios, such as reinforcing the Norwegian Arctic Brigade in case of a Russian attack in Northern Norway; reinforcment of the Baltic States (Sweden has this year put up two new regiments to protect the transfer of American troops to the Baltic region); reinforcment of a potential Finnish front; and help for Sweden in defending Gotland (which would be imperative in the protection of NATO's northern flank and the subsequent 'neutralisation' of the Kaliningrad exclave). There are quite many things going on up here in the north (I am Swedish, myself) that does not receive media attention.

@@shorewall We were on friendly terms with Russia. We did some historic border deals, we had a good salmon export, we made a deal of border passports where anyone living close to the border on both sides can cross it without needing a visa. Things like that. But then they invaded Ukraine, and the relationship soured. Salmon export haulted forcing Norwegian manufacturers to look for new markets. It was a whole ordeal. But Norway is not worried about Russia for ourselves. We're worried for the arctic region in general as ice is melting and waterways are opening. We're worried about the three Baltics countries, which we have strong ties to, both historically and culturally but also a lot of our companies are invested there. And what more, just the general situation in Europe with things like Ukraine, Georgia and even Belarus. If Europe become unstable. We're a European country with European solidarity and responsibility, so we'll stand with our Europeans partners. But if this European partnership is based on American terms, it's going to be difficult. *TLDR on the following paragraphs:* as long as the US holds all power over nato agenda compared to Europe, bad decisions will be made(like human rights violation). Nato is nothing but an anti-Soviet remain which is too focused on Russia. With Turkey as a member, we're not a defender of democracy or freedom. And with a focus on the Atlantic, we miss stronger alliances with democracies across the world. /tldr The thing with nato is that the Europeans economies have to invest and develop their militaries more. Right now Europe is free-riding off of the US. That causes Europe to be a weak voice, and so we see the American way of doing things(which often violates human rights and international law compared to Western Europe) and the American agenda becomes too strong. And at the same time, the American public is paying an incredibly unfair price as the military spending of the US is unheard of. It's the US tax payers that has to pay for Europe's defense, it shouldn't be that way. If Nato is to work, it needs to be re-done completely. Nato is an anti-Soviet force which did not care about things like democracy or rights, it was just a defense deal. With military juntas like former Greece and fascist states like former Spain, everyone was welcome as long as they were against Soviet. What's more Nato is focused on the Atlantic, hence the name, but the world is getting smaller and we are heading towards a future where demoracy itself will come under heavy threats. By the 2040s we'll have begun depleteing our resources, from food to wood, minerals to oil, to such an extent that it's gonna inevitably lead to a major international crisis. Causing more immigration around the world, more wars, more famines. Then we have global warming which will add to that, with huge areas of now habital land slowly becomming unfit for human habitation. Worst might be in China where several hundreds of millions are going to have to relocate this century. Africa, Middle East and South Asia will face similar issues. We're heading for a turbulent century. In such troubling times ahead of us we need closer ties with democracies and sub-democracies like India, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and even South America to come together to show we value the principle of democracy and will defend it when-ever it's threatened in the world. Such an alliance would encourage continued democratic development elsewhere in the world, in hopes of joining a strong defense alliance. And we would need to distance ourself from Turkey. Turkey is in the alliance only because of strategic reasons, because we're scared of Russia. But the rhetoric, sanctions and state agreements that has been coming from Turkey the past 10 years has been over 50% more aligned with Moscow's policies than Washington's. So then why are they in nato? They have behaved like their own men in Syria, and attacked secular and more democratic forces just for control and power. They are growing increasingly authoritarian and less secular. They're refusing to admit the Armenian genocide, and they are continuing to discriminate minorities like the Kurds. And they are making ridiculous claims over marine borders towards another nato country. Not to mention they insulted another nato country back when they invaded Cyprus. An occupation they still hold, and which most Nato members considers illegal and against international laws. It's all just too much, having Turkey in our defence alliance is embarrasing.

On a different topic, no one is forcing Russia to do anything. They don't have to regard NATO or Finland/Sweden as rivals or enemies - the only reason they do so is because of these powers standing in Russias capacity to enforce its geopolitical agenda on its neighbours. Even when it's hostile. Which it is. Russia wants to dominate their neighbours and help cause systemic shifts in Western countries - and as long as they do and as long as their territorial ambitions are bigger than their current borders, they will continue to villify themselves, thus causing the very threat against their powers as they claim they are now trying to meet.

But for that to happen, everyone should be on the same page regarding politics and policies, rights and laws and rules and so forth. And i presume that for the most part of that, we all of the little people are on the same page. We just need to find a way to bring it to the top and also to own the required sacrifices needed. I have one gripe: Sweden and Finland joining NATO may have posed a security threat to Russia if it wasn't for it's overwhelming nuclear deterrent. With it, attacking Russia is simply unthinkable. An expanded NATO in Europe wouldn't make it any bigger nuclear threat than it already is either, at least in any meaningful sense. The argument that NATO expansion poses any real threat to Russia is therefore overblown, at best. They were in denial until lots of people were infected. They didn’t know which part of the government was responsible. They didn’t know what actions were allowed by the constitution. The healtcare had virtually no storage of supplies like masks and stuff for the virus labs (where my wife used to work). Elderly care homes were not allowed to isolate individuals with dementia, so they could walk around and spread viruses. There was no quarantine for people entering the country from infected countries. Finland was very different. They had lots of supplies to handle a pandemic, the government made rapid decisions. However, claiming that Sweden could keep out of the cold war is a somewhat modified truth: in order to secure itself it could activate a force of 400,000 men in half an hour, developed an arms industry with great technologies (remember Draken and JAS?) and was often called the superpower no one knew about. Also, the UDSSR wasn't exactly honoring Sweden's sovereignty. Their uboats were constantly in Swedish waters and once one even run ashore and got stuck right outside of Stockholm, the capital. Skirmishes of various kinds were quite common. Also, Sweden subtilly sided with the west. This also had practical military implications. Once, Swedish fighter planes escorted a damaged SR71 Blackbird under threat from Soviet Migs to safety. Being the West's northern flank of utmost strategic importance (particularly for the Soviet navy) was quite costly and stressful. I'm from Norway and remember those times very well.

Despite the fact that Stalin had again asked his ally Hitler permission to invade Finland already in 1940. It was only after Stalin bombed civilian targets in Finland on several occasions between June 22 and 25, 1941 that the government of Finland allowed the Germans to maneuver from Finland in exchange for the help we needed for our defense. The Russians love to rewrite the history to glorify their war crimes, so it's important to realize that we waged separate wars with the Nazi Germany against the common enemy but there never was an alliance between Finland and Germany, probably because Mannerheim did not trust Hitler. We tried to reconquer the Karelian Isthmus that the Russians had occupied in 1939, but refused to take part in operation Barbarossa and the siege of Nevanlinna (then Leningrad) even when Nevanlinna was an ancient Finnish town burned and occupied by the Russians in the 18th century. There was a defensive deeper into Karelia as the Soviet Union had broken the Moscow treaty of 1940 and the borders established in that treaty no longer existed. In 1947, in the Paris treaty Finland was forced to cede territories to the Soviet Union only because the Soviets lied to the allies that Finland had been the aggressor, when in reality the Soviet Union had been the aggressor and invader in both the wars in 1939 and 1941. The Kremlin archives were opened in 1989 and Boris Jeltsin himself admitted that Finland had been done wrong in the Paris treaty, but when Putin came to power, he quickly reversed the then official narrative back to the Soviet lies. It's a fact the Paris treaty has never been valid only because the Soviets hid their war crimes by concealing the existence of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and its additional protocol from the allies before signing the treaty.

Yeah, the USSR first of all began to bomb civilian targets in Finland during the German attack. "In 1947, in the Paris treaty Finland was forced to cede territories to the Soviet Union only because the Soviets lied" - yeah, the allies didn't know anything, but if you told them, everything would be different :) If the Russians are rewriting history, at least they are doing it smartly.

Few points. Yes back in 1941 Finland and Germany had the same enemy. Finland's Continuation War wasn't part of Barbarossa. War between Finland and USSR eruoted 25th June 1941 when USSR bombed Finland. Finnish army attacked to gain back their territories that they lost in 1939-1940 Winter War. Finland for example refused to take part of the siege of Leningrad. Finland never had similar consentration camp that Germany had. In 1944 after Finland and USSR made peace Finland was in war with Germany. It was only about Finnish independence. Finland was never allied with Germany in the manner many like to say. Second, after Cold War ended Finland was the one who kept its defence capability high when Sweden shut down their conscription and focused crisis management. Only now Sweden is rebuilding their defences.

Try to be rational. In what possible future setting would Russia invade either Finland or Sweden. You're buying into alarmist rhetoric which will only work to benefit special interest groups. Join NATO and it will be US arms manufacturers who get to expand their market. Sweden will torpedo itself internationally as a neutral, a reputation which has allowed Sweden to mediate in foreign conflicts while also inviting American influence into Sweden's defense politics as well as our foreign policy. Do you think Sweden will get a voice anywhere after joining NATO? We'll dance to the tune of American policy makers. While wishing to remain independent we will sign away that independence for security. Security over a threat that is not real.

@@glenglen6386 It makes perfect sense. Russia wants to control the Baltic sea so they can deny NATO a crucial staging ground to aid the Baltic members. That's only possible if they capture the Swedish island Gotland and surely much of the Finnish territory. In other words, if they want to invade the Baltics, they have to either invade or obliterate Finland or Sweden, or just make them surrender by a show of brute force. Ask yourself this, would a divided America really risk a nuclear war to save the Baltic nations when push comes to shove? Would the UK or France risk obliteration to save them? I don't think so. And if they can let Russia have the Baltic nations, who are NATO members, they would definately let Russia have its way with Finland and Sweden if nuclear war is the option (as they're not even members). That's why Putin is moving his weapons closer to the US and other nuclear powers (as to deter them from intervening in his upcoming blitzkrieg against non-nuclear countries).

@@glenglen6386 Just like there is no attack against Ukraine. Oh wait, it already happened 2014. An attack against the Baltics, Sweden or Finland is just as imaginary as a potential attack against Ukraine. If Putin is to realize his vision of an imperialist Russia with soviet-borders, he has to take the Baltics. There is nothing protecting the Baltic nations save empty words and promises from NATO. A new poll regarding the swedes view of joining Nato just came out the other day. It's now 37 in favor to 35 against (the gap is still in the margin of statistical error). In 2017 it was 43 against and 32 in favor and the issue has been in political hibernation for a couple of years. There are divides in both of the political coalitions and and within parties. With the election in Sweden this fall it is possible that, if things escalate, it will effect the outcome and some parties stances on Nato. But issues on foreign policies of this magnitude and concerning the military tends to be made with a broad majority in the Parliament, for the sake of stability and longevity. If the pro Nato side wins the election this would involve them still having to involve the Social democrats( Sweden's now ruling party and the largest). If Nato is made into a major issue separating the coalitions during the election, the Social democrats can't agree without it looking as they have betrayed their voters. There will have to be an incredible shift in public opinion on the issue if Sweden is to join in the near future. It looks more likely that members of the EU will try to strengthen its military cooperation. Macron might be alluding to something of the sort and it would be a "way out" for some of the Nato-skeptics. The Lisbon treaty is rarely talked about in Swedish politics.
