From the days of Louhi the sorcerer to the 19th century feminist Minna Canth, Finland is sometimes titled a feminist country. This video looks at some loosely connected (or not) aspects of Finland's female history, not excluding any mythical aspects, of course.
00:36 Louhi
01:09 Viking Age women & burial of a "warrior woman"
01:59 Protection for the women of Karelia
02:27 Witch hunts
02:47 Vitun väki
04:09 Minna Canth & rise of women's rights
05:01 Final thoughts

Sparse population and hostile environment haven't allowed Finns to marginalise half of the people. Everybody was needed for humans to survive in Finland at all. That being said, when Christianity spread to Finland, women's position in the society started to decrease. I'd bet it was like that in great many other places as well. Christianity originated from a place that could be called a natural environment for humans as an animal species, so everyday life wasn't as much of a struggle as in Finland, where technology is required simply to stay alive for a day, much of the year. Thus, with life being much easier in Christianity's birthplace, the society could afford to turn women half way into a commodity. Unlike many pagan cultures, Christianity is highly patriarchal.

Famine followed Christianity to Finland. Bringing social hierarchies to Finland from areas where you get more than one harvest a year, allowing other parent to stay home and rear the children, coupled with abortion ban... ...turned out exactly as expected.

Finland's population was not any more sparse than population of sweden and norway at the time. Finns need to wake up and realize that their land was just as organized as scandinavia during the iron age with 100% agrarian society and stop believing the lies of the swedish speaking elite that says finns lived im the forests and had nothing of value before sweden "civilized" them.
@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme Год назад
@@Aldanil Wut? Who cares about Sweden or Norway? Why don't you compare Finland to Italy or France, for example. In the year 1000, for example, when we can assume Christianity might have started to approach Finland, Italy already had a population as large as Finland today in 2023. Needless to say, the whole Finnish population in the year 1000 was comparable to some random city down south back then. In fact, it still is today, because cities have also grown larger.
@EdwardSkihands
@EdwardSkihands Год назад
At the end of the Late Iron Age, i.e. between the 12th and 13th centuries, the population of Finland is estimated to have been between 20 000 and 40 000 people.

"Thus, with life being much easier in Christianity's birthplace, the society could afford to turn women half way into a commodity." You do know that Christianity originated in the Middle East? Life wasn't easier there at all. Patriarchic views of women are not excluded from pagan religions or ancient societies. The treatment of women as a property was deeply rooted in many society back in the old old days. When Christianity spread, it wasn't seen as a great oppressor of the women, but upholder of the status quo. Slavery was also ok in Christianity, as it was in other religions and societies before it. If something, Christianity gave hope to women and slaves, that at lest in the eyes of a god, they would be seen as equals to (free) men.

But she had great sense of humour and if one didn't know, it would have been hard to believe what hard lives our grandparents had. Wishing you well! 🙂

in Tacitus' germania finns are known as Sitones. It is Mentioned that Sitones were ruled by woman(Queen). Word Queen comes from ancient scandinavian name for Finnish people: Kven. Skandinavian iron age kings took Finnish Wives from Finland that was then known as Kvenland. in some chronicles finland is known as terra feminarum because of the good position of womenin society. this good position of women has nothing to do with harsh conditions of Finland, But has everything to do with Old European Matriarchal culture that survived mutch better in the north than in the south. According to modern genetics finns are nearest population to Neolithic europeans in the world. There are also astronomical temples in finland called jätinkirkot. jätinkirkot are neolothic astronomical temples comparable to central european megaliths but finns do not understand the value of those. If you want to know finnish history and culture, do not ask Finnish people themselves because they know nothing about their own history, except very few.

When I was in school, our history book told that population disappered Finland in Iron Age, the country was uninhabited! Finns don't know much of prehistory, because it was poorly researched and funded. It still is, they can't even dig sites that are being built on, because there's no money to study the sites.
@Aurinkohirvi

@Marcus The male smith sky god related words in Finnish for example god, sky, hammer, lightning come from the Indo-Iranian loan word layer. Which is Bronze Age of Chalcolith (Copper) Age. The Indo-Iranian god Perkwunos is constructed to be early form of this god, which spread all over Europe. Finnish Ukko/Ilmarinen (Ilmarinen probably his original name while Ukko was originally his pseudoname) is also this same god. After Indo-Iranian loan there was the Baltic loan words layer. The Germanic loan word layer is Iron Age, so that's way too young for the Finnish (and other Finnic peoples around the Baltic Sea) for the male primary god system.

@@kalervo3669 I read that the sickle was found on his chest. There were 2 swords, BTW. The finer sword was above head level, while the more common sword was in its proper place, probably was seathed. If it is not a commonly found pattern, I would not read anything about where the burial gift was found. Gifts may be put in what ever place, and if there is no coffin cover, stones can move them.

So, I would have liked to have seen the images that were cut out but my country is full of prudes and patriarchal folks who pretend that part is dirty. They sell tons of sprays, soaps and powders to cover up the natural smell. I think it's a Magick portal, and often " meditate" on it's powers. Then I dream of sea monsters and butterflies. I love your videos!

There is alot of woman through out Finnish History, and they deserve all Praise for generations to come. My personal Favorit is Lotta Svärd, who is also one of my Favorit Finnish heroes of the past. Its Just sad that modern Cringe Feminism, Ruins the legacy of those who started the movment. Simular i dislike MGTOW, Man Sphere, and Tates. They are also as Cringe as the modern Cringe Feminists. They are 2 extremes of the same Coin Some may call me A woman hater, or Not a masculin man. But i dont care, i stand for what i stand for, and i personaly belive i didint say enything wrong. Woke has landed into Finland last year. I did see a choir on TV that sang about "mansplaining" and one of the singers was ugly and bluehaired. Soon Finland will be under heavy racial and social segregation. Half of the population will be deemed as evil by birth. Been a parent will be greatest sin. Colorblindness and true equality is gone and replaced with agressive victim mentality. Finnish economy will collapse and peace is history.
