The basic equipment of the Finnish Army came from what was left in Finland by departing Russian soldiers when Finland declared independence. As the Russians had no scoped rifles at that time, Finland didn't have any either. The Finnish Army began experimenting slowly with the concept of a scoped military sniper in the 1920s, but really didn't do anything. The Civil Guard made a few dozen experimental snipers in the 1920s and 30s, but also nothing of real significance.
In 1936, the Army finally made a concrete move, contracting to purchase 250 3x optical sights from Physica Oy in Helsinki. These were intended to be universal optics, suited for mounting on sniper rifles, machine guns, and small cannon - an idea that looks great on paper but is actually terrible. By the time the Winter War began, only 84 of the scopes had been received. Ultimately, 150 of the scopes were assembled onto M27 pattern sniper rifles, with the remaining 100 scopes put into storage (none would ever actually be used on machine guns or cannon). The scope had a number of problems; it was heavy, awkward to use, had very short eye relief, and tended to fog up in cold weather.
When the Continuation War began, the M39 had replaced the M27 as the standard Army rifle. The M27 PH snipers were mostly torn down, and the scopes were mostly used to assemble new M39 PH rifles. These had largely the same problems that the M27s had, and they were not particularly popular arms during the war.
In addition to the M39 PH, Finland also built a number of M39 SOV snipers using capture PE and PEM Russian scopes, a few hundred M39-43 snipers with German Ajack 4x scopes, and a few hundred M39-44 snipers with a domestic Finnish copy of the Ajack. None would be of real significance during World War Two, with the M39-44s not even completed until after the war was over for Finland.

He also made good use of the Suomi Kp/31. Some people think “sniper” and they think of the sorts of stuff going on in the recent Afghan war with crazy long single target shots. These guys were more sharpshooter/jägers that would use their skills to engage targets at whatever ranges they were comfortable with and/or ambush and then (hopefully) melt away before the enemy could mount a proper counterattack.

The name of the war in Finnish literature depends on which side you see yourself being on... Civil war is the most neutral term commonly used, others like independence/freedom war, class war, red rebellion etc are more or less politically charged names.
@XoravaX
@XoravaX 2 года назад
It depends on the point of view, as those Russian soldiers who were loyal to the Bolsheviks took part in the war against the Finnish government, and a large part of the early phase of the war was about who would get to control the Russian weapons (both government forces and socialists wanted them). Lenin's war minister Podvoisky also declared that it would be impossible for them to stay neutral in the war in Finland, and in 1920 a peace treaty took place "to end the war between Finland and Soviet Russia". So, in terms of international relations, Finland had a war against the Soviet Russia in 1918-1920.

I suspect they still wanted to have access to the irons in a hurry, if the optic failed. Optics at that time weren’t known for being robust. If you lose the optic and have no sights, you effectively don’t have a rifle whereas you can quickly get an optic off and have the irons ready to go and get the rifle back in the fight.

see as how the cheapest doesn't raise the comb of the stock you should still be able to see the sights even if you're not exactly comfortable doing it.

Seeing how the giant cheek rest was attached to the stock by using wooden dowels, I can't help but think the idea was that with an axe, you can remove the thing if needed, and go back to iron sights.

Iron sights were more than likely still usable, you just had to dig your cheek a little harder into the cheek rest to line your eye up with them. And like others said, scopes weren't known for being super robust, so removing the iron sights wouldn't be a good idea. Better to just leave them on and use them if you have no choice than relying on a fragile scope and the gun being rendered useless past point blank range if the scope ever fails

in historical sense a very interesting thing. i wish i can go to a range day with this m39 rifle and the scope to compare it with my m39 with pu scope

One minor correction... If I'm not mistaken, one drifts the scope off much like you would remove a drill chuck from a drill press, not use a punch. That is the only thing that oval hole on the rifle side of the mount could be used for.

Simo Hayha was using iron sights instead of optics. I didn't know why. NOW I UNDERSTAND HIS DECISION.

The only proof you need as to how bad these scopes are is Simo Häyhä (The White Death). The most devastating Finnish sniper to come out of the Winter War (possibly the greatest sniper to ever live) refused to use the scoped rifles, opting for nothing more than iron sights even for shots beyond the tangent range.

Reminds me of the Warner-Swasey. I wonder how they compare. I think most all pre ww2 scopes regardless of national origin suffered from fogging.
