The 1st 6000 M39's built at SAKO in 1941 had the straight stock due to not having the machinery for making the pistol grip stock at the time. The stock was made using the pattern from the M28/30 which in itself was also an excellent rifle built for the Civil Guard. The M28/30 was the rifle Simo Häyhä used during the Winter War.

Thanks Eric and Chad,I absolutely love my M39's and K31's so seeing a video on using handloads is great. I must have completely missed the D166 video so I'm going there after this......it was you Eric that got me addicted to the M39 and K31 so thanks again for continuing to do video on this two awesome rifles!!!

I agree, However It may be close with the M-39,, They were gone through by the Fin's. But.. Like you I believe that the K-31 would have an edge over the the M-39. I love mine.. Never going to get rid of it.

There is no actual D166 surplus ammo available in the States. So it would be old and crummy Swiss 7,5x55 surplus ammo against hadloaded brand spanking new Lapua D166 bullets with Vihtavuori N140 powder and Brand spanking new Lapua 53R-brass and brand spanking new CCI-primers.. Actually I think some of the barrels on M39s were made by the same folks at Sig that made the K31.. Go figure.. :D
@Thorsaxe777
@Thorsaxe777 7 лет назад
I'm sure that in his network Eric could get some Factory D-166, He has 1.343.445 and growing subscribers, There has to be someone out there who could get him some or tell him where to get it. You are right though, The Handloaded ammo would be a race in it's self. Good point though StPaul76.

I enjoyed the video. Years ago I somehow accidently found my way into an M39 for $70 at my local gun shop. I knew it was a moisin but I had never seen one like it before. I didn't actually know just what it was until several years later. I took it to the range with surplus Russian ammo and it stacked them on top of each other at a 100 yards. A very good shooting rifle. I was very pleased years later when I learned that they were very collectable and sought after. I want to load some D166 and see what she can do. Thanks guys, I really enjoy your videos.

Hey guys. Had a thought for a video that I think would be really fitting for you bros. A ballistic comparison of various barrel length ARs with a chrono from 100-600 yards. SBR, 14.5, 16, 18 etc all in 5.56 for the guys out there trying to decide what to do with their next build. It would be great to see the benefits and differences with real, tangible evidence to help decide. Hope you guys see this and hope it's not something you guys already have done. Keep it up. Congrats on 1.3M subs! Well deserved!

I was very excited to see the video on reloading the D166, and this is the proof of its deadly reputation. Until I did some long distance shooting myself last year I didnt realize how much the wind factors in. Some might watch this, and think its accuracy was nothing to sing about, but quite the opposite is true, 600 yards, open sights, 20mph crosswinds, is nothing to "sniff-off". I'm 100% confident, if one of those cows had made a mis-step, it would have been met with a very swift end, those rounds struck the plate with plenty of authority.

I recently got a M39 in a trade at a gun show. I bought some Monarch green cased ammo from our local Academy and hit the range at my local gun club. I set the ladder at 600 yards and fired at the 24" gong at that distance. I was ringing it 3/5 shots each magazine. I'm very satisfied with the weapon.

Hey Eric, I wanted to share my information for you and the others, now I know what the big "T" in a m39 stock means. Those rifles were kind of a reference rifles which units had and adjusted or checked zeroing of other rifles somehow with those marked rifles. So they were not allowed to be used in combat to avoid losing the reference values in them. I don't exactly know how that was done in practice, but those rifles should be in a better condition than some others. Hope this was helpful and greetings from Finland! PS "T" could indicate "tarkka"=accurate, "tarkistus"=check, inspection etc...

For all of us casters it would be great to see you find a bullet mold (albeit custom probably an NOE or accurate mold) that would be awesome in the M39. Lee/ RCBS etc. would be great too as long as it was a great load.

gromann That's inspiring. I have a typical Russian 91/30 that I put into an archangel stock. I was thinking about digging up an m39 barrel and having it put onto my 91/30. Maybe I'll hold off on that and see what kind of accuracy I can get out of the original before I go dumping even more money into it. I put a Timney trigger into and got a bipod etc etc. Really jazzed it up more than it's worth. Luckily it's a project gun for my son and I don't plan on selling it cause I'll never get out what I put into it. Just wanted to see how much accuracy I could get out of an old milsurp rifle if I gave it some help. I haven't really had a chance to put it to the test but before I put anymore into it I'll see how well it's doing. This is probably more info than you were expecting. Sorry.
@gromann
@gromann 7 лет назад
Mosins react very well to accurizing. The action lends itself to great feats of accuracy, but that's also why their accuracy is so inconsistent. There may be a 91/30 that did 1 moa out of the factory just because it happened to have that lovely luck of having perfect tolerances from luck. A 3-4 MOA rifle being average - with handloads, bedding and floating, then a better trigger (or just a trigger job) can get very respectable groups. I'd say upgrade the barrel as a last resort if you have good rifling and the crown is intact.

Nice shooting. I would love to see that that Tikka of yours can do and maybe that B-barrel. And then yea put it up against the K31 or the K11 at that range. Would be a heck of a day of shooting

Awesome video. I seriously doubt my M44 will be able to do that. Lol
