As an American I don't feel I can say too much about another country's leadership, given the clowns we have in Washington. But at the very least when you reach the highest office in your country you put any questionable activities on hold and hold to the highest level of class you can. Resume doing whatever when you are out of office and not responsible for the lives of every single person in the country.

People have to understand that there are some protocols inherent in a public person. It's not a question of her being a woman or a man. If it were a man, it would be equally inappropriate for the position she holds. She has the option of resigning from her post and living her youth as a free woman, but the moment she commits to the country to assume the position of prime minister, she is subject to having to comply with certain protocols out of respect for the nation. It's a decision, you cannot have everything. And this reason is precisely what keeps many people away from public careers. Just my humble opinion from outside. Cheers!

As a non-Finn, I may not have enough knowledge to comment about the politics of another country, but the way I see it, Sanna Marin should have been more careful in presenting herself in public or private, especially considering that this isn't the first time she has landed in hot water, and also that she is the most powerful person in the country. She definitely deserves her own free time and she is free to do whatever she wants, but as a prime minister, she needs to be aware that there will be eyes and ears everywhere and the whole country will be looking and judging. Getting herself caught in questionable situations like this recent one again will not only erode public confidence in her, but will also provide ammunition to her political opponents and critics.

Before she became a prime minister and even before she entered national politics from local politics, my view of her was positive. These sort of things have turned me to a critic of hers and I actually do now fear what she is doing to Finnish politics by pulling out things from american politicians playbooks and other things. If she would have hold any other position in politics, I would not have been happy about this but she is THE MOST POWERFUL person in the nation at the moment. In short I just want Finnish politics to stay boring.

When I first read about it I thought "poor lady, people are overreacting about it", however, by that time, I didn't know she was on duty, neither did I know she was married (brazilian news channels failed to include those informations) I strongly agree with her that political persons are humans, and, had it been a male prime minister, he wouldn't get the same treatment or repercussion, for sure, however, it was incredibly tacky and disrespectful towards her family to be dancing that closely to that man. I have a few finnish friends here in brazil and they never even kissed female friends in the cheek (which is the ordinary greeting in our country), so, to me, it's pretty clear that a finn won't be touching a total stranger or a friend like that. Also, I agree about getting intoxicated while on duty. We had a senator fire for use of c0caine, and, personally, doesn't matter wether se was or wasn't on drugs. Alcohol can cloud one's judgement just as bad, so she souldn't be drinking at that time. Period. She was disrespectful to her family and her country, and I don't think that's something that can be tolerated, really.

The dilemma of individuality vs duty as a nations’s representative, some feel the PM s behaviour also reflects their values and some feel individuality shall be celebrated apart from their jobs. As a politician, no matter what the details of the truth is, it might be more about how it appears, as the end of the day all the news title will be “ Finland PM” did this or that, with pictures as such n such. Thats why some may feel deeply offended as they don’t share her values , as well as some don’t mind as they think it’s her individuality. But notice all the International news titles will put her title before her own name.

It really bothers me that people want to make this about the partying. No one has a problem with partying. It's about what went on AT the party, poor company, and a lot of irresponsible behaviour. So far, it looks like there was probably illegal drug use, and more details keep coming out that don't look good. We have a useleas drug test that proves nothing because it was taken too late. And Sanna Marin's devotees have an excuse for everything because apparently we don't have standards anymore. And then there are the lies straight from Sanna Marin's mouth. I have dealt with a few narcissists in my time and I'm fairly sure she is one. Agree with what you've said. I only add that I make a moral judgement on her around the way she's dancing with other men so intimately while being married with a child. And in general all of this is not acceptable behaviour for a leader of a country. The people who vote for her are quite conservative too, I think it will cost her.
@winns35
@winns35 2 года назад
My thinking on this is if the person she's supposed to be most dedicated to can't trust her then how can an entire country trust her? And the same thing coming from her side, if she's willing to do such things and betray her husband and child then why should you believe she won't betray people she doesn't even know and likely doesn't actually care much about when compared to her family. That's where I would have my issues with it along with the fact these actions also make her vulnerable to foreign influence. Let's say more happened and a foreign government got their hands on the video and decided to blackmail her with it. So yeah I'd say there's quite a lot wrong with putting yourself in that situation as a prime minister.

I know nothing about Marin or her marriage, so just assumed she must be in an open relationship. If ethical non-monogamy is the deal, then that one is a non-issue for me. I don't care who's snogging whom so long as she does a good job on-duty. If it's NOT the deal, well, they, uh, probably need to talk. As someone said, stuff like this might become a point of blackmail, although feck knows how many male leaders/celebs -of the past- have had affairs quietly swept under the rug or rationalised (at least by enough voters), as the natural manly man™ thing to do, and not impairing their ability to king/PM/general/whatever. I WANT to like her, which I've never said about any politician, and I don't begrudge anyone their 'recharge' time, but misjudging when to call it a night appears to be a recurring theme here... At least the Covid party seems to have been a genuine mistake, unlike some politicians here in the UK who have been caught deliberately flouting rules they made for everyone else to follow!

I am a ex-pat Finn living in Australia and yes we know about this as well. So yes, it has gone viral around the world. As the world is in a recession possibly going into a depression like 1929 - it seems not the best idea to party when you might have an energy crisis in Europe and lot of people will face hardship. When people struggle to put food on the table and your PM is partying like no tomorrow seems a bit hypercritical. I thought you might have more important issues to deal with. At times like this you need strong leadership to guide people through the crises that is unfolding. People use alcohol and drugs when they are not coping with issues in their lives. I have witnessed this first hand, so maybe there is some underlying issues? The second issue is security, I know Finland is a safe country but I remember this: "On 28 February 1986, at 23:21 CET, Olof Palme, Prime Minister of Sweden, was fatally wounded by a single gunshot while walking home from a cinema with his wife Lisbeth Palme on the central Stockholm street Sveavägen. Lisbeth Palme was slightly wounded by a second shot. The couple did not have bodyguards with them." Just wondering if she has security and if so what is their role?

Aleksi, I have some advice. As a outsider looking in to a country I am going to move to. The PM is a public servant in the highest position of power, with that you will need to be seen in a certain light. You have an important job, to serve your people in the best way possible, to make changes to the country that best serves its people, to make sure that the country you live in can always strive to be better. The term for this service is 4 years. Its not a long time. You get paid well. You need to be the best person you can be, and also be a role model for future PM's. This doesn't mean you cannot have a personal life, but you need to make sure you remain professional at all times. You are to sacrifice your life for 4 years to serve your people. That is what the people of Finland pay that position to do. Please for the love of all that is good. You guys need to remain vigilant. The west is completely fucked. Our Leaders are self serving only, only serving their own needs, and that of their peers. They are narcissists. If Finns think that this type of behavior is unacceptable, all power to you, she uses dangerous language when she commented about that she is going to still do stuff that she wants to do, that is a slippery slope, because you do not want your country to fall into the hands of someone that thinks in that way. You pay her wages. You have the right to be pissed off if she's not doing her job. If she is actually doing a really good job policy wise, then maybe this could be forgiven. But again, she should have apologized for video and her behavior, not reinforce it but saying that just because she's a leader of your country, she cant party and get drunk. I'm sorry but that is what the position of power requires, absolute sacrifice to serve your people.

No one, not the PM of Finland or any other human being can be "on duty" 24/7/365. That insane. If the country is so dependant on one person, well you've got other problems. She stated at the start of her term she wanted to redefine somewhat the role and how the PM is perceived. She's doing just that. She's is not only allowed, but *entitled* to live her life as she sees fit. She, at least as far as I can see, represented the interests of Finland abroad very well. She's met the goals of her administration and guided the country through some of the most serious challenges since the end of WWII. If a private life that's a little too exciting or risque for some is the worst of it, then I think that's a more than fair deal! To be honest this smacks of little more than some old ppl griping, political opponents taking advantage , and plain old misogyny.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact Finland does not have nukes. In my country, constitutional posts are 24/365. Not that you don't get personal time or sleep. Just that you must be able if the situation demands it. If your army general has a tendency to drink to the point of losing rational capability even for a few hours in a decade, that person shouldn't be given the responsibility. Also it's fascinating, if true that Finns don't have a concept of formality. I have been a consultant who travelled the world and the first unwritten rule is don't get seen drunk if you choose to do it in personal time.

As usual, now, ' Experts' feels that she is victimise and attacked due to her gender. PM Boris was literally destroyed during PMQ in UK for attending staff gathering. At that moment, there were no 'Gender' issues by the 'experts'. This nothing got to do about gender!!! She needs to lead by example and yes, you want to have social life, however, when you are holding the highest position in the country, nevertheless, you need to know something called ' limitation'. She wants to be on social media, encourages people to so and nothing stays private when you are holding Public office. She seems to enjoy being surrounded by celebs and parties. It is so scary, when any PM or President says, that they are able to make sound decision when they are influenced with Alcohol! You are a leader of many household of your country. At the end of the day, the silent majority, will express their feeling during election. Reminder, there are critical situation at your border. But sure before I had kids I was at these kinds of parties and know it is pretty common for people to act out a lot. It is not that unusual for people who know each other well or who are friends to get maybe a bit more intimidate than they should when intoxicated. There is generally quite a big distinction between what done while drunk and what done while sober in Norway. It is sort of accepted that people who drank a lot of alcohol do stupid stuff. The day after you are expected to get back to being a boring self composed inhibited Norwegian. It is a bit of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing I have noticed many foreigners react to. For me what matters most is that Sanna Marin sticks to the core Nordic values: Honesty. She is not trying to pass off blame on somebody else. She is not denying what she did. She isn't starting to attack somebody else. As a Norwegian who follows US politics a lot it gets to me how often they straight out deny stuff or go on the attack when caught doing something bad. Sanna Marin is owning what she did and honest about who she is. I keep telling my kids that we all make mistakes. We all screw up. Our character is not judged by our screwups but by how we own up to those screwups. Also I think in a world with so many corrupt politicians and where politics is really nasty with lots of insults and personal attacks, Sanna Marin should be honored for being an honest and nice person who isn't attacking and insulting other people. Quite the contrary she is promoting a more inclusive society. That counts for a lot more than some error in judgement about partying.

Nobody pushed PM vacancy on her. When someone takes on the Job with highest amount of power and a huge paycheck, you also take on a huge responsibility. You must basically give up a lot of your personal time and needs to serve the people. If she had been on vacation, there would have been a temporary replacement for her to handle sudden crisis situations. She cancelled her vacation on that weekend for some reason, so she was on duty. Then she got drunk on friday and saturday. In a crisis situation, she would have not been able to lead anything. For me that is unacceptable! If she had been on vacation, she Could have drinked and danced a whole month in a row If she wanted. It would have been fine.

Aleksi, I thought your post was measured, informative and fair. I wish mainstream media was more like this. I never respond to click-bait, shock-horror, or pearl-clutching stuff (from any sort of media) anymore, as it just feels like I'm being used or people / companies are pushing their own agenda - which I hate. In this case, just as in any other job, people need their down-time, so a job's responsibilities - whether high or low profile - should always reflect this (adequate cover provided). Maybe Sanna partied that bit TOO hard (in some people's eyes) BECAUSE of the stresses of always having to be "on call". You wouldn't expect a doctor to be on call 24/7 for all of their career, and they also have so much responsibility and the need to be on top of their game. Here in the UK, I hadn't looked too much into the 'scandal' other than seeing a couple of short video clips of a young woman enjoying herself - fairly unremarkably - at a party. It all seemed kind of innocuous on the face of it. But, then, I didn't know that Sanna was married, or that there was suggestive / maybe inappropriate behaviour with someone that wasn't her husband. If that is reflective of cracks in her marriage, it's very sad - whether or not the evidence got out to the whole world. I guess she is human, just like the rest of us. We should count ourselves lucky our mistakes don't get shown to the world. I realise Finnish PMs are not like, say, US Presidents, with a security detail always to hand to help prevent them being filmed in the first place ... though that means privacy when out in a group setting wouldn't exist anyway. I don't know what the answer is, to be honest! Even the most mild-mannered, principled politicians can be slated and ripped to shreds by the media, if the owners of that media have an agenda. You only need to look at the case of Jeremy Corbyn, ex leader of the UK's Labour Party, to realised that. Who'd be a high-profile politician, eh?

That's job of the bureaucrats. - Yes, videos of a political office holder partying with media personalities, intimately hugging leads to speculations- whether drunk or are close. But, apart from non-leave partying video to surface just raises a leader's code of conduct and the drug test: which was negative. I am not Finnish, people are making excuses for her saying she was living just like any other person. So all Finnish married mothers of young children go serial party hopping and drinking while on call without their husbands? There are many jobs that are on call, not just PM. Anybody working in those kind of jobs getting drunk and going partying while on call will be disciplined. On top of that, with Russia lurking like a wolf, this is not the time to go get wild on duty. This is a clear sign that she is very careless and carefree. Not a trustworthy person to bear the duty of national security for Finland. She is not just any woman, she is the leader of a country. If she is just some woman on the street, no one would care if she shoot up heroin on camera.

She is not a serious person if she parties like this but modern politicians don’t need to be. Finland is a small country and is under the rule of Brussels. So all state decisions come from the outside and she just needs to make sure she implements them correctly. This is her job: not to create but to follow. She doesn’t need to be fresh 24/7 for that purpose. We live in the age of state degradation and today you can hardly see politicians like Roosevelt or Jacques Chirac. In the future, there shall be no states as transnational corporations will rule. Discreditation of the state representative is a step forward to vanish the statehood and Finland is quiet succeeding with it. Covid and other points you have mentioned are irrelevant. Again the instructions were from Brussels for all member states. Countries had some freedom to move those frames but not to change substantially.

This is like our Boris Johnson scandals in the UK. During COVID lockdown he was having parties at No 10. If you are not willing to accept strong limitations on your personal activities, you should not put yourself up for the job of PM. And you should be very careful of who you associate with - it looks like drugs were involved in the Finnish case and even the PM didn't actually take them herself, she must have been aware that others were. What would be her excuse if Russia launched an attack while she was drunkenly clubbing.

Nothing surprises me when it comes to politicians. In my country (USA), corruption is the normal, to the point that supporters of one party or the other will ignore these things. It's disgusting. It sounds to me like your PM may not be taking her job as seriously as perhaps she should be, and I would not at all be surprised if foreign intelligence, especially Russia, is trying to take advantage of that. That is what they do. Given how unhappy Putin is with Finland trying to join NATO, and that you guys are a border nation with Russia, I would not be at all surprised if he is making attempts to destabilize your country in some way. With that said, the job of Prime Minister of ANY country is extremely demanding, and the people doing that job are only human, and do deserve some time to unwind. Duty does have to come first, though. Being overly intoxicated or unreachable in the event of an emergency or national/international crisis should not be considered acceptable behavior from any public official, especially at her level. If she was not on a sanctioned vacation and did not leave a deputy minister or other official in charge while she was off partying and such, then I would say that she needs to be held accountable in some way. As far as the drug test goes: Anybody can say anything in the media, and lab results can be faked. She is literally one of the most powerful people in Finland, and I imagine that it would not be hard for her to obtain clean urine samples, pay off media outlets, pay off labs, etc. I don't think we are ever going to know for certain if she was or was not on drugs. In regards to her intimate dancing with other men: Maybe her and her husband have an open marriage of some kind, or go to swinger's parties, and the general public isn't aware. Frankly, that is nobody's business but her and her husband. As long as these other people she's hanging out with don't wield any kind of influence over her, and she isn't sharing sensitive information or State secrets with them, it doesn't matter. If there is cause for concern for such things, then bring these people in for questioning and get to the bottom of it one way or the other.

The country was never in danger and even if an emergency had occurred, her cabinet and other people in executive power would assist in decisions. In a fair and just society like Finland everybody is innocent until proven otherwise. If she so states that nothing unlawful happened, and nothing her husband can't know, that's it. NATO membership is not dependent on her private time behaviour. For God's sake, there's plenty of NATO members representatives that have done far more egregious things, known and unknown.
