Fantastic video and great reminder, Doug. I bought replacement carbon monoxide alarms for the two in my house that go bad after 7 years and reinstalled the one near the bedrooms; this is a reminder for me to install the second one near the water heater that I considered a non-priority and it will be done today.

I have been on that dive boat twice in Sant Barbra had a great time, wonderful crew, but I took the time to find the deck hatch and grabbed that bunk. It was a plywood boat , I never saw a smoke detector, but who knew cell phones would be a fire risk when it was built in the 80s

My Dad was a firefighter in the 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s. He wasn’t much into paper-based risk assessments and PPE. I’m pretty sure his job, attitude and diet contributed to his early death. However, he accepted it all with dignity & grace. He didn’t blame anyone. He didn’t regret anything and had loved his job and his life. All that said: he was a dead stickler for smoke alarms and everywhere we went, he scooped out the fire escapes! Good advice Doug, Dad would approve 😁👍.

I may be looking at the wrong info, but on Amazon the Ring Doorbell comments say that after the 30day free trial you have to pay $3 a month for a cloud service that captures video of who rang/messed up your doorbell so you can view it later. Otherwise it is just a real time camera and if you don't catch the action, press record on your phone, at the time it is happening, then it is gone. So after the $100 initial payment, it is $3 a month for the rest of the time you have the doorbell. As an example 5 years = ($3x12x5) or $180...

I've recently decided to build my own yacht, 32 feet wide by 80 feet long, with a draft of (if my math is correct, which it never is) about 9 feet to 12 feet depending how much I put on it. Ive never built a boat before and I dont have the money but, Id like to live on the ocean and building is clearly less expensive than buying. Found you while researching. You're awesome! I don't think it even detects things like burning toast so you don't need to worry about that! at the very least it'll light up yellow and announce "heads up! there's smoke in the kitchen. the alarm may sound. the alarm is loud."

Doug, you should test these with the bulkhead doors closed. Make sure the radio signals will travel around the steel bulkheads.

I did, they work. There is only one bulkhead and the units are less than 20 feet apart.

Hey Doug, will there be any detectors in wheelhouse ? Figuring that cooking will eventually burn something, or if the grill/pizza oven is getting smoke blown back by wind, you can mount the detector and its mounting hardware inside a well sized disposable tupperware or similar container on ceiling so a lid can be applied to temporarily isolate the detector from known triggers like cooking. The lid can be velcroed to sit next to detector when not needed...

I believe that boat was actually anchored near Catalina Island when that horrific event took place. Accident? While I highly doubt a fire was intentionally lit, tough to call something an accident when so many methods of prevention could have been (and were not) employed. There certainly weren't any audible alarms for smoke. As you mentioned, there was no roving watchman. Also, though, the design was flawed: only one major point of egress from that cramped and crowded compartment. Catastrophic failures are always a perfect storm of stupid things coalescing into horror. The hindsight on this is crystal clear. I'm glad to see you're being proactive in protecting your eventual crew(s), Doug.

I agreed. And I get that lack of resources necessitate taking risk, but a $5 smoke detector amongst some many educated and informed people and over a million dollars worth of equipment is astonishing. And the same for a Navy vessel staffed with over 150 personal and tied to a dock, that disables their fire alarm system for maintenance but fails to initiate a fire watch. I think we have been lulled into a belief that someone else is taking care of the safety. Perhaps it's all the signs professing that Safety is Job 1. I think they need to be changed to Safety is Your Responsibility.

@@SVSeeker I wonder if the dust etc from the grinders is hard on the sensors? Or if there is anything else that could destroy the sensors prematurely. Edit: as far as I can tell the main thing is to use a vacuum to dust them periodically. Also, I think you've said you have them, but you do have carbon monoxide sensors right? Is the boat considered confined enough to have any other gas sensors?

Speaking of protection, I have been watching many sailing vlogs and the one thing many don't think of before first departure is the lawlessness of most of the seas and how vulnerable sailors are to piracy. I hope you will be doing something to protect yourself, (not that I know how to go about that) BTW love the smoke alarms :) PS I haven't forgot about taking photos of the project (workshop) you inspired me to build, I need to do some thank you SV Seeker signs first...

Top of the list video, also the boat that burned was a fire hazard just from the materials it was made of. Sure you might catch your ceder and foam board on fire but the hull will not burn like a blow torch. Those boats made with polyester, vinylester resins are nothing but bone fires waiting for a spark. The boat that killed all those people burned to the waterline and really fast I might add. A good steal hull will keep fires separated. Again, great video and message for any place people dwell. Thank you for your time and effort.

Without the smoke alarm they were likely and hopefully all gone before flames ever reached them. With a working alarm system, a small fire extinguisher would have been sufficient.

Doug, any thought about installing a sprinkler system? Would be cheap insurance and relatively easy for someone who can hang and thread pipe, especially if it's not a certified system so can avoid redundancies and over specifications that commercial systems have to meet!

No. I think it’s sufficient and much better to find the problem when it’s small and when the off switch, a bucket of water or extinguisher will do.

@Trawler Travels Early warning means someone with a brain will make the call. When the boat is unoccupied, all of non-essential systems will be shut down. With the risk lowered it falls below the cost of and automated system and the expense of installation and accidental functioning. Their will be a CO2 bottle will have a pressurized PEX line that extends into the engine room so it can burn through and slowly flood the room with C02 should an uncontrolled fire sever the line, but all of the other junk involved in automated systems is more risk than it is reward in my opinion. I'd rather know when something is smoldering and splash a little water on it or turn off the power.

Does nest require internet connection for the app? Will it work with local wifi or Bluetooth when there is no internet access?

The connection between the units does not require an Internet connection. It will not send notifications to your phone but if you’re on the water you’re close enough to hear the alarm.

@@SVSeeker that is what I figured. I want something that can communicate with non-internet wifi or Bluetooth control panel. May just have to use an mq2 and make my own to interact with a Droid based control panel.

Small problem with using these on your boat: if the hatches are closed, the radio signal for them to communicate won't work. Now, if they are Wi-Fi capable, setting up an access point that is hardwired to your network in each compartment would link them together. The other option would be to install passive repeaters, but for just a few compartments, the access points would be cheaper.

Good points well made. Please make up a weekly and monthly check list for fire and safety systems checks. Yes the tech is good and generally reliable but a man with MK 1 eyeball and a sense of responsibility...... Signing off that everything is checked and then the 1st Mate doing a random check of list items... Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

It's wifi or blue tooth or some other direct radio signal but it's not troubled by our steel hull.

Just an FYI, I'm sure you are aware, but when you are at sea, you will not get any updates to your phone unless you have a really good international data and connection plan, the updates are dependant on this. When you are out at sea, with no connection to your cellular device, the alarms will wring but no update to your phone. This is the issue with anything when you are at sea, you don't have a signal to the host. Until that is, Starlink comes into play.

Yeah, I didn't think that question thru... Did you test the common alarm feature with a door to one compartment dogged down? If you have half-way good electrical contact the watertight doors can act as a Faraday Cage blocking the wifi signal between compartments...

I’m a retired firefighter on your birthday is good A good day to remember to check the batteries in the smoke detectors. And for gods sake have a plan before the fire. don’t wait until the fire and you just do your best to escape and not know where everyone else is going. I had to run into a burning home because the parents did not know where their kids were. Come to find out they were in the backyard scared. Have a plan and practice it at least twice a year

Any new instalation on carbon monoxide alarm HAVE to be tested outside so that the calibration gets set correctly otherwise your calibration will never be correct making you believed it's safe. Then install.

When the dive teams dove on the Santa Cruz Island dive incident and removed the numerous bodies, based on the positions of the victims, it is believed they died in their sleep. They probably died of asphyxiation peacefully. We can only pray that they did.

Mount it on the wall instead of the ceiling, that will prevent most false alarms. Alternatively get a kitchen-safe model or stop charring your food. ;)

I'd avoid connecting that ring doorbell to the internet if you don't want Mr law man checking in on you.

@@SVSeeker well Amazon is partnering with local law enforcement to share ring data. Our local PD uses it quite often. Less of paranoid and more loss of my right to privacy.
