Very cool! I didn't realize that they were invasive. Grew up in Texas, Zapata and Houston. They were EVERYWHERE. We used to collect ants and dirt in empty aquariums and watch them burrow. You could see some of the pathways beneath the dirt from the sides. One day, we wondered what would happen if we took another type of ant and put them in the aquarium with the original ones. They fought viciously and the winning side wouldn't kill off all the other ants. Some were left alive and would work along side the victors. As kids we would say that they took slaves. Also, the losing ant slaves, when they died didn't get taken to the ant grave hole. They were left unattended on the surface. Many hours were spent watching them go about their lives in the aquarium.

I grew up in East Texas so these ants are all I've ever known. My dad would put sulfur powder in a tube sock and use it to dust our ankles/feet with sulfur powder before we left the house. It keeps pretty much everything from wanting to crawl up your leg (ticks, ants, ect).

I am in east Texas, my dad would dust me with the sulfur in sock too, and he also took a teaspoon of sulfur internally to keep mosquitoes away, I should be doing this also but never remember. I heard that sulfur will also keep snakes out of the yard. There are bugs here that no one knew existed. I heard that Dawn soap in boiling water will kill the ant mound.

I was nearly killed by fire ants in Texas. Ever since, I’m ever more allergic to bug bites and years later, I was hospitalized for more than 3 weeks in Paris, France for some mysterious bug bites. As far as I am concern, they will not be missed if they ever vanished from this planet!

We used to have Horned Toads till the ants came. They've run off most of the Armadillos as well.

OMG this gave me so much anxiety! I remember having to deal with these vicious little bastards when I was in the Army in Texas. I got stung all the time when we were doing exercised out on the grounds and one time in particular while training I was crawling on the ground and accidentally shoved my hand into a fire ant pit. Great googly moogly did that hurt! The stings took forever to heal. I thought for sure my hand and arm were going to be scarred. No long lasting injuries though, just painful memories.

I jumped out of the car in Puerto Rico right into a pile of fire ants about to walk into a restaurant 25 years ago. I still have little dot scars all over both of my feet. Not an enjoyable meal.

They have made their way to Australia too. We got our own colony in an online purchase..a baby's rubber seat that sits on a table, so buyer beware. But here, there are so many creatures that can send you to the ER that it was a bit anticlimactic. Looking forward to your next video, fungi are proving to be medically useful as well as mysteriously beautiful.

One thing people never talk about is that Ant and Termite queen can live up to 30 years. They are the only two insects that love this long. Next in line are US Maryland Cicades larva that live for 17 years 6 feet under the ground before coming out.

When I was in the army down at Fort Stewart, GA (outside Savannah) Fire ants were an ever present problem and I was stung many times. But one event was quite harrowing, we were on a road march and took cover on the side of the road and unbeknownst to me I laid out prone and put my knee right in a fire ant nest. A few minutes later when we carried on the guy behind me in the march ran up to me freaking out and swatting at me because I was covered from my right shoulder down my back and down both legs to my boots in fire ants - absolutely swarmed. Amazingly they were never able to get inside my clothes and we brushed them all off before they had managed to get to flesh but that could have been a really, really bad day.

Fire ants are not native of the US, they were imported "accidentally" with shipments of foreign wood and plants.

I grew up in Brazil and I got stung by fire ants hundreds of times and the itching were, for me, the worst than the pain. When the whole colony goes out to hunt, nothing stands in their way and if they invade a house it's the best pest control because they kill everything in their path. Just leave the house and, in less than one hour the house would be clean of other insects.

I was flying a two string stunt kite in high wind in Hawaii while wearing sandals in the park, suddenly I felt all these stings on my feet and ankles....I assumed I had stepped into some prickly weed of some kind, and quickly moved several feet without looking down, the stinging intensified, I moved again and the stinging was INSANE, I looked down and my feet and ankles were covered in fire ants!!!!!! CRAZY number of stings and the next day my feet and ankles were COVERED in pus filled ITCHY bite marks. I was able to wear any shoes for several days. Was NOT a pleasant experience to say the least.

Here in Australia we have fire ants. There has been a government program going for around 5 years and they are nearly eradicated now. Horrid things, your really brave puting your foot on them.

It was the cold temperature that prohibited the stings. In temperatures below 16 degrees, fire ants go dormant, (sleepy). That is why they immediately covered his foot, but when they got cold, they didn’t do much. The Vaseline probably had zero effect.

WOW. Your are brave. I got stung in the same place, small area about 10 times moving a planter. That was 3 weeks ago and the bites are still itching like crazy.

Ortho makes a fire ant killer in a powder. I keep It in a grated cheese container. Whenever I walk the dog I take it with me and all you have to do is sprinkle a small amount over the top of a mound and they are gone the next day. I am in North Carolina also and any empty parcel of land you can see these things. The mounds are 6 to 12 inches high

They looks like the ants that bit me when I went to visit ffriens in Florida. Alas I was allergic to their venom and got a pretty bad allergic reaction and a nasty staph infection to boot, no thank you, I haven't set foot in Florida ever since.

I didn't know they were the small kind of ant. My experience with a red/black desert ant is that they weren't aggressive-but if you let them crawl on your hand, they only bit you on the quick of the nails; the most vulnerable part of the hand.

If I could choose whether to be stung by a fire ant, or a wasp, neither one of the two is a picnic, but I'd pick a wasp over a fire ant at any time. Yes, being stung by a wasp hurts like crazy, but only if I touch it. Otherwise, it feels quite alright. Fire ant stings, on the other hand, are quite bothersome and, as opposed to wasp stings, they'd always be itchy and pussy, even, whereas some people, other than myself, would experience a severe allergic reaction, if bitten by a wasp... The bottom line is: if you can avoid being stung by either one of them insects, please, do so.
