Swooping down from the heavens on a fire ball, the Kasha drags the bodies of the dead to the underworld for a life of damnation. Most frequently depicted as a demonic, flaming cat, the kanji for ‘Kasha’ actually translates to “Fire Cart”-so why did this malevolent yōkai take on a feline appearance? Featuring the author of numerous yōkai books, Hiroko Yoda, this episode explores the religious and artistic history of the Kasha and takes a look at the significant role of cats in Japanese culture. #yokai #myt #kasha hology #MonstrumPBS
We would like to sincerely thank Hiroko Yoda for her expertise and time. If you want to learn more about her work with yōkai, visit her website AltJapan.com and check out her latest book Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide.

The world is full of monsters, myths, and legends and Monstrum isn’t afraid to take a closer look. The show, hosted by Emily Zarka, Ph.D., takes us on a journey to discover a new monster in each new episode. Monstrum looks at humans' unique drive to create and shape monster mythology through oral storytelling, literature, and film and digs deep into the history of those mythologies.

Could you please talk about Brazilian folklore? I think it would be very interesting, because there is a mixture of elements from native peoples, Europeans and Africans in Brazilian myths. For example, we have the Saci Pererê or Matimpererê, whose name comes from a bird called sa'si matintape're. The term "pererê" comes from tupi "pererek-a" that means "go jumping". This creature is a one legged black boy with a magical red hat. He is a mischievous figure, who tends to frighten travelers with his shrill whistles, braid horses' tails, and swap the contents of salt and sugar containers. he is also known for smoking a pipe and being able to move through whirlpools. Curiously he can be trapped in a bottle and gives off a sulphurous smell, features commonly associated with demons in Brazilian folklore. He's also forced to obey someone who steals his hat. He inherited many influences from different sources, such as the portuguese "píleo", whose magic properties can be traced back from the portuguese creatures "trasgos" and the Satyricon, by Petronius, in which a hat conferred magical powers on a character. There is also the Portuguese belief that a whirlpool was commanded by something evil. From indigenous influences, we have, besides the name, similar entities, such as Jaci Jaterê and Kambaí. And from african culture, there is a Yoruba myth about Aroni, a one legged creature with knowlegde of medicinal herbs. Other interesting myths are: Mula sem cabeça(Headless Mule): a woman turned into a mule with fire for her head for having had a relationship with a priest. Corpo-seco(Dry Body) a vampire like monster that disguises itself as a tree to ambush its victims. It's said that is the remains of someone so bad that neither heaven nor hell accepted it's soul. Cabra Cabriola: A goat monster who rapts children in a similar way to the Velho do saco(Old man of the bag, i guess??) and Quibungo: an afro-brazilian monster with a mouth in its back. Perna Cabeluda(Hairy leg): 70ths urban legend of a very hairy and very angry leg who was attacking people with several accounts of survivors.

Brazilian folklore is super interesting! - especially Amazonian folklore- it sometimes has an urban fantasy feel to it? I read a story about a man being arrested by dolphin police- he was able to tell they weren’t human police because they weren’t driving the motorboat to any of the nearby cities and had silver fish instead of batons. He gets them to leave him alone by smoking tobacco in their faces because the dolphin people don’t like tobacco. I also remember the Saci from Sitio de picapau amarello - that show is why I love mythology so much!

The word "Kasha" (the first "a" is long) in Sanskrit, means "To shine, look brilliant or beautiful." As a cognate, it could easily refer to a flash of lightning or fire in Japanese. As presented in the video, "Akaneko" is a slang for "red cat" because a cats tongue is red and looks like flickering flame. Now, imagine a black or gray cat and it flicking red tongue, looking so much like a black or gray cloud with lightning flickering/flashing from it. Given the whimsical nature of the human mind, it is not a far stretch to see now they might be connected. Thanks

@@pokechatter Thanks for pointing out the spelling correction. I made the the change in my comments. 👍 I should have mentioned in my comments earlier that the attachment of the cat to the cart may be metaphorically similar to how lighting is "attached" to a cloud. There are *so many* fox spirits in Asia, it's fascinating.

I remember seeing Amabie. It was March and I was in my College course on break. It was an art piece in the JJBA Style with Rohan and Narancia cheering for it and it made me happy because I was so worry about the covid news. A few days or mare later when Spring break hit, we got the news that all classes are canceled and the college had to shut down due to covid. I'm going back now for online course but I will never forget how happy I felt seeing that Yokai and what it represented and how long it's been around.

@12:30 The game is Nioh2, and it's exactly what made me click on this video. The Kasha was a very memorable fight and really ties in all of this into it, the entire level is a town set ablaze and the Kasha when she appeared was that of a cat lady demon that was moving around on two wheels like a cart and it was also on fire, literally taking both the fire cat and fire cart concept into one.
@andanssas
@andanssas Год назад
Thanks! I went to the comment section looking for the game's name. Found the video "Kasha Boss Fight #12": the concept is nice but they only show a small scene focusing on her abnormally large breasts, weirdly licking her arm and literally on a couple of cart wheels... It's a pity that the adaption of such a powerful mythical creature to modern times or "tastes" ended up being so poorly done 😿 If this arose your curiosity, the "cart" is the old way to describe what we now call UFOs or UAPs, referenced in the Book of Enoch and Indian mythologies: they are always fiery "carts" 😼
@Sumowning
@Sumowning Год назад
@@andanssas Poorly done in the game? The game itself has a wonderful adaptation, she's supposed to be somewhat alluring, but her fight as well as her lore are amazing. There's a lot of small details as well, and the environmental story-telling is really solid. If you fancy Souls-like games, I suggest trying out Nioh 1 and 2

@@draochvar9646 thanks! For future reference: > A Kasha (literally "fire chariot") is a yokai that snatches corpses and spirits them away to hell. Its name originally referred to the mythical chariot believed to transport sinners to the underworld. It is believed that this folklore got fused with the ancient Japanese belief that a cat should never be allowed in the vicinity of a corpse, resulting in the conception of Kasha as a monstrous cat that drives a fiery chariot. Kasha is a servant of hell tasked with torturing the very souls it steals. In Japanese, there is a saying that one is in a fiery chariot, which means that one is suffering great financial difficulty. This saying originates from a belief in Kasha, with the struggle of poverty being likened to Kasha's Torture. > Japanese folktales also feature another type of Kasha known as Nekodanka. Most of these tales revolve around a cat who wishes to repay the kindness of a poor temple that has taken it in. This cat will cause something eerie to happen at a funeral, only stopping the supernatural show when its favored temple gets involved in order to improve the temple's reputation. There are many variants of this story, but they are all based on the folk belief that cats have the ability to exert mysterious powers upon the dead. As these tales spread, various funeral rites were introduced all over Japan to keep Kasha away from the deceased.
