Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer on responding to World Trade Center on 9/11

Retired New York City Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer was the first fire chief on the scene on 9/11. Remarkably that day, he was being filmed by a documentary crew shooting a film about firefighters in Lower Manhattan. The group watched the first plane hit the World Trade Center, and the chief and the crew immediately raced to the scene. Pfeifer is telling his story of that day in a new book “Ordinary Heroes: A Memoir of 9/11." He joined “CBS This Morning: Saturday” to speak about that day.

Love this guy I remember the documentary from years ago. Something about him, when I was watching the documentary originally, I thought his leadership I'd want to be under if I was a firefighter. He has this peaceful demeanor and I'm talking back then when I saw the film and even in this interview.

I’m reading his book. He went to school to become a priest and being a firefighter was just a side job. I highly recommend reading Ordinary Heroes.

I wish those who interview him would do some research and stop calling it a ‘film crew’ at the WTC during the attack. It was not an entertainment event. It was one person, Jules Naudet who stayed by the chief’s side from start to end putting his life on the line.

I’ve seen the Naudet Brothers’ documentary about 9/11 and read Chief Pfiefer’s book…I got a real sense of the horrors that the FDNY, NYPD and all of the first responders experienced on that day and my heart goes out to all of them. God bless our first responders!

He saw so many of the now deceased firefighters and instructed them on what to do. So devastating that they didn’t make it out or have their remains returned.

Get a copy of the documentary they refer to. "9/11 the Commemorative Edition" is the finest video account of Ground Zero in existence today. The only account in existence. Two French journalists were doing a documentary of Chief Pfeifer's hook and latter unit. You will not believe you eyes. I have used it in my Modern American History college classes. INCREDIBLE !!!

Chief Pfeifer is the fire department's version of Captain Sully. Consummate professional, articulate, and cool and collected. Much respect for him and his colleagues who answered the call.

Captain Sully, Major Richard Winters, Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain these were some very outstanding people who where apart of and witnessed historic events in history and recorded what they experienced and immortalized them.
