The game that saved the Fire Emblem franchise from certain doom, and one of the most popular that's also frequently seen as one of the best games for the 3DS. Almost a decade later since its release, how much does Fire Emblem Awakening stand the test of time? Let's join the Shepherds and battle some Risen to find out!

In this video of Fire Emblem Awakening, I will explain why I think Fire Emblem Awakening is still an amazing entry and ages well like fine wine, and how Fire Emblem Awakening is also a great starting point for newcomers. Fire Emblem Awakening was released in 2012 in Japan, and 2013 everywhere else. Fire Emblem Awakening is perhaps Intelligent Systems riskiest game, as the Fire Emblem series wasn't doing nearly as well before Fire Emblem Awakening. Fire Emblem Awakening saved it though and brought over everything that made each Fire Emblem game interesting. This my Trash or Treasure video and Fire Emblem Awakening critique on how Fire Emblem Awakening is Aging Like Fine Wine. Fire Emblem Awakening - Trash or Treasure? | Aging Like Fine Wine.

Bought the game with no prior knowledge about fire emblem, just liked the characters in smash bros and asked my friend (who played the games already) if I should get into the series, of course he said yes and so I bought awakening and it was the best choice I’ve made in my life 10/10 would fall down the rabbit hole again

In my opinion, the "pointless" choices you're given throughout the game serve the narrative as a way to make your final choice more impactful. You play as Robin having every important decision be taken out of your hands at the last moment, only for your final choice to be the one that saves the world (Assuming you kill Grima yourself). Your decisions finally meant something, and I think thats what they were going for.
@augustonian3522
@augustonian3522 Год назад
I completely agree, the decision with Emeryn almost completely parallels with Robins but in a reverse way that can show the character of the person making the choice, with Emeryn it's do you sacrifice another to save the world, and with robin whether or not your ready to sacrifice yourself.

My first entry into the series was Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, it was a reward from redeeming game codes on the Nintendo Club website. I downloaded the software and just left it sitting in my 3DS along with the dozens of other rewarded games. But, I eventually played it and became engrossed in the story and gameplay. Once I finished the game, a little while after I saw the commercial for a new game. Fire Emblem Awakening for the 3DS. You bet I bought this game right after it came out in America. If I hadn’t played Sacred Stones, I probably wouldn’t have considered buying Awakening. Also, Lunatic+ was a terrible casino disguised as a game difficulty. If this game were to be redesigned, I’d have either given the enemies more skills or had them paired up to counter your units.

Yeah but you need to babysit him (first in his chapter which is a nightmare on higher difficulties in classic mode) and need to put a lot of resources into him. If you play casual with the extra battles that can spawn, yes he is worth it. However, if you do a "pure" run (just normal and side missions, no dlcs or extras) he is not. His growths are extremly high yes, but his base is trash. Heck there is a reason why some the game Frederick awaken, because he is pretty much Seth out of FE8 on steroids. Let him tank and feed Robin the exp. A good unit needs (unless it is a unit that joins at the final chapter at max or almost max Level) a good base and descent growths. And the base for Donnel is horrible (16 4 0 2 3 11 3 0 and 5) that is unlocked by chapter 3. In chapter 3 Sumia joins the team with better stats (18 6 3 11 11 8 5 7 7) who is also a flying unit, something Donnel can never be.

I tend to let the fact that no-one figures 'Marth's' gender until its revealed a little slack as if we look at when she's introduced the first time its with robin who has no memories, Chrom who we know is incompetent with women, Lisa who is implied by her lines in the early game to have that be her first mission or something close to it so she isn't exactly in the right state of mind, and Fredrick who to be fair I don't know probably he didn't want to correct his lords. The rest of the times is during battle and high stress time sensitive situations, so I think its fair that it took a while, great video btw

Yep, it is a treasure. This game is still one of my all time favorite games, it just did such a good job at introducing a newcomer like me into the story, but also had a LOT of things for veteran players to enjoy too. The story was good, the characters were FANTASTIC, the combat was fun, the graphics were surprisingly good for a 3DS game, and the soundtrack... oh man, the soundtrack. Don't Speak Her Name, Id (Purpose), Divine Decree, Chaos, etc. Every track brought out a completely different feel to the game, and that is really cool. Tiki even gets her own track for her support conversations, making her feel like a mythical creature of sorts, which seems pretty accurate for what anyone would think talking to her. I hope this game gets a rerelease on Switch. NOT a remake, a Re-"RELEASE". The game is so good as is, so it would be great if they literally didn't change a thing in terms of dialogue and story.

The awakening story is really good just heavily rushed Chrom is the main character, and he is one of fire emblems best main characters there is. The storyline focuses entirely on his personal development, which has him combat against his past and the sins of his father Then his present, with Walhart ad a clear foil tk Chrom himself, and all his darker thoughts and actions Then of course his future/his fate. The entire Grima plot line is given to us I. What it means for Chrom. Robin does get one scene which takes on Chrom, and how he will respond and what he will do. He grows a lot over the course of the story and has a strong personality instantly made him my favorite Which is also part of why his pairing with Olivia is so strong. It’s the only one where his supports actually follow his character arc. We actually get to see him in his personal space personality, the shy and award but dedicated man As well as his commanding personality, the king who will do anything for his people, even confronting his own shyness. It’s also the only way Inigo makes sense, as he canonically compares himself non stop to Chrom and Lucina; references Lucina’s sibling supports, and is a high figure in Chrom’s New Shepherds (the name of the second generation) Warriors, Fates, and Heroes even imply Chrom and Olivia married or Inigo is Lucina’s sibling. That said I messed up on my first run. I didn’t manage to get it my first try and I also went for Sumia which is now my biggest regret. For any game I’ve played that’s the hardest I’ve messed up my first playthrough lol.

People don't like Lunatic and Lunatic+. They really should have playtested them. I've cleared Lunatic+ without grinding and without Robin, but it was tedious. That, and people are generally not too fond of the cast. There are characters I still like in this game even though their fans moved on at this point.
@coldeed

It's overly simple, lacks strong use of the older features they brought back, tedious, grindy, weak characterization and overall pretty bad story. So it's great as a casual game for people that are not at all experienced with fire emblem but boring and low quality to old fans. It's also the start of the series becoming a bad anime game vs grounded fantasy with some limited high fantasy elements. It also is the game that enabled shippers and has things like Nowi which appeal to the types that deserve to rot in a cell. And garbage self insert that's too important.

@coldeed
@coldeed 14 дней назад
@@futrecacao yeah but there's a difference between having a ton of featured things and a ton of things being heavily impactful and well-balanced. Part of what makes the game an incredibly good casual game is that it's not incredibly difficult, it has a ton of old mechanics and in very few ways gives you restrictions on how to use those mechanics. That's good for being a casual game to mess around with and you know spend a lot of time just playing with. It does make it bad from a hardcore strategy perspective. And mostly because the older series has significantly more punishing and limiting design, you have to be a lot more intelligent about the decisions you make as they're really not something that you can just walk back from. Like it has a lot of these similar kind of problems that made every version of fe2 a very casual experience. It's pretty ridiculously hard to make mistakes that make the game hard or impossible to finish, and while being rather unique was criticized in the same exact way that Awakening was. The main difference being Awakening does in a lot of those ways highlight the problems that fe2 had. They are intentional and it is supposed to be a game made for mass appeal that's not really you know pushing itself to impress the old fans.

Awakening was my first Fire Emblem (and so far only, other than trying out Heroes for a while on mobile), and I bought it without having any prior knowledge of the series. I just wanted games for my newly bought 3DS and I saw the game on the shelves, it looked cool and decided to get it. Overal I liked the game, I like turned based strategy games, the story was intriguing and most of the characters were likeable, but sadly I never finished the game due to some very glaring issues that I had at the time, mainly how hard it became to level up characters that were falling behind due to how the exp system worked, so I'd end up taking weak characters to battle to try and level them up for them to just end up dying to a couple of hits at most, or just never being able to land any hits at all, which was very frustrating.

The thing about Fire Emblem games is that you're not really supposed to try to level everyone up. Due to (most) Fire Emblem games being designed around the permadeath system in mind, the games typically expect you to pick roughly 7-12 characters as your main team, stick with using said characteristics and bench/kill off everyone else. You're not expected nor supposed to try to level every single character up in these games.

As force fed as this sounds, if they ever make a remake I would love a same-sex pairing option. However, to circumnavigate the future child mechanic, have them explicitly discuss adoption down the line, perhaps making it happen during the time skip. They can easily create a character who would or wouldn't be their adopted child post time skip depending on their rank. In turn, that would create more complexity to the time mechanic

I know that doesn't make it good, trust me: the characters have about as much depth as a deflated kiddie pool, the story is mediocre at the best of times and maps are big open fields with only two objectives: kill commander or rout all enemies. Still, I do find the characters likeable and well-designed, the music is fantastic and it's really addicting taking down an entire map's worth of enemies. And even though it's cliché, I still like the scene where Chrom prevents Lucina from killing Robin. Three Houses is better in every way, but Awakening is still a decent enough time.

A shame this game had to opt for allowing level grinding. That one factor affects a game like this in a GIGANTIC way. I understand why they did it: it makes the game easier and they needed a hit. However, for the few of us willing to really engage with our games, the immersion that games like FE7 gain by limiting the player's resources is unmatched by these more casual experiences. Like in real war, you don't have unlimited time and fodder to let all of your soldiers train. As a result of this, I lost many units playing FE7 for the first time, and the experience was overall more compelling than any other tactical RPG I've played. AND I didn't have to spend a second on boring level grinding. Fire Emblem and casual mode/level grinding don't mix. Well, they CAN mix, but in so doing you will dilute the experience of the game from a compelling, high-stakes war epic to a monotonous, mindless, care-free exhibition. Without limited resources.... without the consequence of permanent death... what reason is there to care about anything in these games? No risk = no reward. The experience of losing units and making the best of things with limited resources is the essence of assuming the role of the tactician controlling the action in FE games. These things ought to be treasured, because they are what set Fire Emblem apart from lesser tactical JRPGs. There are already PLENTY of tactical JRPGs in which you can allow every unit you have but one die in one battle but then revive all units in the next battle. We don't need more of that stale experience. Not when earlier Fire Emblem games already have let us taste something so much more immersive and exciting.

Hi I only mean to say this with respect but when someone is analyzing a story, trust is very important When you refer to Chrom as “one of the main characters” when Nintendo themselves has been heavy handed “the main character” “the protagonist” and even called Lucina and Robin “secondary characters” on every piece of marketing that mentions it.. It disestablishes my trust in you as a narrator. I can’t trust you understood the story, or even played it yourself instead of just looking at cutscenes and going based on that. Some error and mistake is natural but that is a foundational and underlying thing. You also say Sumia was your choice because she and Chrom already had feelings and “their relationship would be good” when their relationship is built entirely on food. Whereas, Olivia had a crush on Chrom since they met, and their relationship (both in supports and in the story) is built on mutual trust and attraction. Sully and Chrom’s relationship is built on equality and training together. Having a favorite is okay but you implied the crush was a Sumia thing, which it isn’t, and just saying “their relationship would be good” without going into any of the relationships just makes it look like you, again, didn’t analyze anything yourself and just watched a cutscene which takes away your credibility. This is a game I know and frequently search for videos on; what happens when you talk about a game I don’t know?

I think you're taking things a little too seriously in regards to Chrom. Yeah, he's labelled as the main protagonist of Awakening, but it's easy to understand why people would say he shares that role with Robin and Lucina given their story relevance. Also, if you look at the Fire Emblem wiki, both Lucina and Robin are called main protagonists as well, so he's not wrong with his assumption. As for the Sumia thing, I think you're kind of overblowing it. There is nothing wrong with him pairing Chrom with Sumia for simple reasons, like her having an obvious crush on him. In regards to the food thing, that's all because the localizers had the asinine decision to change all of the Chrom and Sumia supports to revolve around food. In the original Japanese, food was only in one of them. This is actually why I avoid their S support in future playthroughs and just have them marry through the main story instead of support conversations. In regards to Olivia and Sully, what about them? Just like the Sumia supports, they're entirely optional. He didn't have to unlock them. Heck, in order to even get Chrom to marry Olivia, you have to have him avoid ALL of his potential marriage partners because if he isn't married to anyone after Chapter 11, the game automatically pairs him with the one who has the highest support points with him. There's even a priority system with it: Sumia first, then Robin (if female), then Sully, and finally Olivia. On top of having Chrom effectively having to social distance from the other girls, you have to have Olivia dance for him at least 8 times to build up enough support points to get them to marry (you could potentially just have them pair up and have Chrom fight a lot of enemy units to build up support points that way, but it's a lot easier just having her use dance on him). Support conversations are an optional thing. He's not trying to say which are the best ones, especially for Chrom. That's why he didn't talk about his supports with Olivia and Sully or elaborate on why he picked Sumia to be Chrom's wife. Personally, as someone who has beaten Awakening multiple times, I can wholeheartedly say that it doesn't matter who you pair Chrom up with, as it is simply player choice. This applies to every other character in Awakening too. He doesn't need some deep reason to go with a specific pairing. Heck I pair Chrom with Sumia all the time for the same reasons as him (though their arguably the best pair for Lucina gameplay wise as it gives her easy access to Galeforce, which is a very broken skill in Awakening; Olivia can learn the skill too, but you really have to work for it if you want Lucina to inherit it). You're taking a side, and optional, mechanic way too seriously. Look, everyone's entitled to their own opinions and such, but I think you put too much pressure on the reviewers for your own good. Judging from your comment, if they don't fulfill specific requirements, you can't trust their review on a game. Again, as someone who's played Awakening multiple times, ToT actually did a good job. He gave his thoughts about the important things regarding the game, like the story, the gameplay, voice acting, and even the graphics. That's all you really need in a review. You don't need to cover the game in a microscopic detail where you analyze every single little detail as that is asking way too much and will really inflate the run time of your review. Also if you do that, you're more likely to make mistakes, which can bring down the quality of your review.

Once you play other Fire Emblem games many realize it has bad story and characters as well as poor map design, unecessary ambush spawns, and either broken or heavily RNG based game mechanics.

I would say it's aged poorly. the game sells out on alienating it's strategy game fans. FE at it's core is at its best when the RPG elements are conjoined with a strategy game. Fates tries to split these two types of genres apart in the form of two different games, but Three Houses is like the true form of Awakening. It can still be played very RPG biased on Normal mode, but the hard mode and up returns the series back to linear limited resource strategy gameplay. FE Awakening is so misunderstood that diehard fans will critique the game by saying it has poor map design and gameplay as if they were even trying to flesh out that stuff. It needs a remake or they can move on and just view it as the financial success they needed to truly advance the series core ideals without selling out for a more casual audience.

You seem to really like Donnel and the children, but I just don't like grinding in Fire Emblem. You found later chapters easier because you spent way too much time grinding for stats - you unbalanced the chapters for yourself. The beginning was hard because grinding out stats was not available to you, and that would have continued if you just played the game. Fire Emblem is frankly at its best when you have limited resources and you have to wisely and carefully distribute them. XP grinding completely voids the entire point of the game, and turns into Final Fantasy. The kids mechanic is also pretty stupid, outside of Lucina, but I guess it's more tolerable here than in Fates. Still, these are changes I was not a fan of, but at least they are not forced onto every player. I wish I could disable them altogether though. If IS is going to do generations, actually have a time skip and commit to it.

It was trash when it came out and still is with the worst story, characters and design. The only reason it’s the best selling game is because it was actually marketed well. There’s a reason all of its mechanics are taken from previous games

Nah that's cap. FE9 and 10 were marketed well. Ike is the best known character in the series topping popularity polls in both the west and Japan and the Tellius games sold like shit. First of all, not all of the mechanics are from previous games but it borrowed those because the developers thought this would be the final game so wanted to throw all the fanservice for FE that they could. Awakening more than doubled the previous highest selling games of Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. Fates sold even better and Shadows of Valentia was about a third of Awakening's sales.

@@24hr-Gaming “marketed well” is not just having a smash rep, sure I was excited to see ike in brawl after playing FE9 but plenty kids at my school thought he was from Zelda. The only “fan service” in awakening is for people who weren’t already fans *cough* little girls in skimpy outfits

@@SweaterPuppys This was before Ike was in Smash. FE9 got about as much advertising as Tales of Symphonia in terms of local stores would have posters or trailers talking about the game FE10 had a big marketing push by Nintendo for being a big rpg on the Wii. And you can see number comparisons to other games that would similarly appeal to people of that demographic at that time. Maybe during Marth and Roy time the series was not well known, but the Tellius games have always had a pretty vocal fanbase but both of those games sold badly. I was someone who hadn't played Fire Emblem during those releases so for ignorant fans to pretend like they weren't advertised is simply not true. FE10 alone got more push than Tales of the Abyss. Also did you even play the game? The entire game is about Marth's legacy 1000 years after his game ended. Valm arc is fan service towards people who liked Fire Emblem gaiden. It's even in the name. Valm as in the country Alm conquered. The marriage system is a call back to Geneology of the Holy War except actually well done because you can see the affection levels of your party. Every single Fire Emblem game makes some kind of cameo. They even have the descendant of Ike as a playable character. You get a follow up on Tiki's story and in the dlc she talks about her times with Marth. I am pretty convinced that people who make comments like yours don't like fire emblem.
