Metal fires such as magnesium burn at temperatures exceeding 5,000°F, much hotter than other fuels, at these temperatures water aka H²O breaks down into the base components, hydrogen is obviously highly flammable and oxygen is part of the fire triangle, and CO² breaks down into carbon and oxygen. K extinguishers were developed because it was recognized that fires in commercial deep fat fryers though similar to a class B fire, the higher flash points of vegetable and animal oils and fats rendered the typical ABC type ineffective and had a tendency to reignite because modern commercial deep fryers are better insulated and retain heat longer than earlier models, in this day and age of energy conservation concerns.
