Fire From The Sea & Fresh Caught Fish for Breakfast

Making fire and cooking fish on the coast in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I got a lot of help from the ocean for this one.
This beautiful coastal ecosystem varies a bit, but extends for hundreds of miles from Nothern California, up into Canada and SE Alaska and offers a bounty of amazing materials and resources that the native people put to use in incredibly ingenious ways.
Between the lush Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar forests, and the bounty of the ocean, nature has a lot to give here and I am so grateful to be able to enjoy it.
As the ocean pounds the shoreline in the winter storms, some of the forest ends up falling into the sea, where a vast variety of materials are smashed and processed down into different sizes against the rocks before it is tossed effortlessly above the high water mark. Everything from twigs and giant old growth logs, to marine materials and flotsam from Asia end up in these piles, and make life a lot easier than it would be a few miles inland.
I have been camping on this coast since I was a little boy, and have been fortunate enough to spend at least a couple of weeks a year out there for the last several years.. It's like home away from home.
Questions, comments, and suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.

Loved it all especially the teaching without speaking because I have to replay and look closer to what you are doing. I'm 74 years old and I learned this stuff about 5 years ago and I'm still learning. Thank you for teaching an old man that just won't quit . I make my own long bows and arrows. I use a spear for a backup cause I only hunt bear. Been doing this for 10 years or so and only taken one bear .

Thanks TC! 🙂 I use a lot of river driftwood, and it can be a great source for fire material. Creek beds are damp places by definition, so you want to find some wood that gets lots of sun exposure to counter that.

Now, this is my favorite kind of video, Primate. I can smell the salt air from here . . . wait, that's my ocean ;)) I can't get over how much some of your shore looks like some of ours, but, we're known as the rocky coast. And isn't it wonderful how quickly the driftwood catches with the help of the seabreeze. Imparts that briney, smokey taste to everything. I like the use of the kelp. Thumbs up, my friend.

@duxdawg
@duxdawg 6 лет назад
Being citrusy, should be a lighter version of wood sorrel or lemon. I've eaten tons of spruce tips raw. Haven't cooked with them yet though. By the way, heading over to watch your Campfire Reflector vid next. Cheers and all the best Lonnie! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s8pYiN13-ns.html
@nwprimate6416
@nwprimate6416 6 лет назад
Thanks Lonnie! 🙂 Duxdawg is right on with his guess about it tasting lemony. The flavor was subtle, but a bit like a small squirt of lemon juice. I regularly nibble on those little tips when they are new and bright green, so it is flavor I enjoy. I ate a couple of them out of the fish too, and they were very tender, so I may experiment with cooking them at some point.

The way you undercut the bottom of the board has helped me tons. Thanks, that's an excellent tip in addition to one I think I got from Lonnie from Far North Bushcraft, of counting strokes after smoke starts really going. I think it more gets my mind off it and makes you just go for 20 or 25 strokes. I've struggled for years off and on and been having constant success lately.

@nwprimate6416
@nwprimate6416 6 лет назад
Thanks Charlie! 🙂 That was a redtail surfperch, and they are very plentiful and easy to catch out there for much of the year. They are feeding on crustaceans being churned out of the sand by the surf, so they're really close to shore. It is not uncommon to catch them three or four times larger than this, but this little guy was enough for a light breakfast. I usually end up eating several of them a day when I'm out there, and may show some more in a future video.

Super interesting and beautiful! I had no idea one could find fish so close from the shore. I usually go to the coast line around La Push. Is this an ok place for fishing? What sort of bait are you using? Also, I never fished before so sorry for all the questions, but what sort of fishing rod is adequate to do this, and that is compact and packable? Thank you for sharing the PNW beauty!
@nwprimate6416
@nwprimate6416 5 лет назад
You should do great in La Push. You don't need a special rod of any kind. The easiest bait to use is GULP! soft bait...they really like a short piece of the red wigglers they make. You can also use natural baits as long as you're not in the ONP...basically any little critter you can find and put on a hook.

I've never noticed any of the skunk cabbage flavor. Just keep in mind that the leaves do have microscopic calcium oxalate crystals in them, so take care not to eat any with your food or you'll end up with a burning mouth and throat. There is usually a little ash on the fish unless you take the time to bury in the sand and make a fire over top, but I've never noticed any effects from this.

@avidanglerorobsession6127
@avidanglerorobsession6127 4 года назад
I'm not as good as nwp but I'll try to help if you are doing bow drill you can get away with wet materials but it will be hard because you have to dry it out with friction before you can get the ember with hand drill It's almost impossible with wet material and for the hardness of if you can dent the wood with your finger nail it good but sometimes when the wood is wet I like to use a harder piece because I find that it can get very hot and dry out the wood faster but the dust usually isn't as good and is harder to ignite I hope this helps

What boots are you wearing fella? I notice the soles are stitched on and those are hard to find nowadays. Thanx, brann

I can't believe you noticed that. They are made by Alico, but I think I've had them ten years, so I'm not sure if they make them anymore.

I have above average observation skills. Lol...........Its a curse. The nearest I can get to a decent pair is the old Austrian para boots but they are ex issue and have had the piss beaten out of them. I cant find great pair of boots that last as all the glued soles melt eventually with the amount of time I'm sat next to fires cooking etc. Solid stitched and glued soles don't come away. I'll have a look for the ones you mention. Cheers mate

😆 That spruce pitch does look a lot like seagull poop now that you mention it. The fish was a redtail surfperch.
