Fire grenades were an unusual form of fire extinguisher popular from the 1880s to the 1930s, consisting of glass globes full of fire-retardant liquid meant to be thrown at the base of a fire. They rapidly disappeared from the market when it was discovered that their key ingredient - Carbon Tetrachloride - was extremely toxic.
